Former Madibeng Municipality employee arrested for fraud worth R30 million

NORTH WEST – A 34-year-old former Madibeng Municipality employee was arrested by the Hawks’ Commercial Crime Investigation in Pretoria today, 11 February 2022 for alleged fraud.

The suspect is allegedly linked to a case of fraud worth approximately R30 million where a Brits based attorney, Gerard Jacques du Plessis (55) was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in 2019.

The suspect allegedly connived with du Plessis who was hired by the Brits mall to handle municipal payments on behalf of the mall from February 2017. Instead of making the payments as agreed, du Plessis allegedly pocketed the money and supplied fictitious receipts to the manager of the mall.

The suspect will appear before the Pretoria Specialised Magistrate’s court on Monday, 14 February 2022 where he will be facing 17 counts of fraud.

Police Minister Bheki Cele says he is satisfied with the security arrangements for this year's State of the Nation Address.
Cele says there was no need to increase the number of police officers at the Cape Town City Hall where President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver his speech.

Police Minister Bheki Cele held a media briefing after addressing members of South African Police Service and other security forces at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town.
Cele indicated that police have done security assessments in the area around the City Hall for the past two weeks and that he is satisfied.
SAPS has joined forces with the City of Cape Town Metro Police. Cele says this is done to enhance law enforcement for SONA.

Nursing staff at Tembisa Hospital in Ekurhuleni say they are struggling to come to terms with the loss of a nursing assistant, Lebo Monene. They have described her as a kind and friendly person.

Thirty-year-old Monene was shot and killed by her police officer partner at the hospital on Wednesday.

The officer, who was in uniform and using a state vehicle with blue lights on, drove into the hospital and shot Monene before turning the gun on himself. He's in critical condition at Milpark Hospital.
