Burgeoning young wine writer Kristen Duff from Cape Town has clinched the coveted Veritas Young Wine Writer title for 2020.

Duff, who heads up online communications for Publik Wine and its subsidiary CyberCellar, thereby won herself R15 000 in prize-money, while runner-up Le Roi van der Vyfer, sales ambassador of Saxenburg Wine Estate, collected R7 500.

An elderly couple have been seriously injured in a collision between two motorbikes on the Franschhoek Pass, just outside Franschhoek, yesterday morning.

ER24 paramedics arrived along with Metro EMS and the Stellenbosch Fire and Traffic Departments at 10:20. The husband and wife, who had been travelling together on one of the motorbikes, were found to have suffered serious injuries. The other oncoming biker had managed to jump from his bike at the last moment and was luckily uninjured in the collision.

ER24 treated a 70-year-old man with Advanced Life Support interventions while Metro treated the woman, believed to be of a similar age, with Advanced Life Support interventions, before both were transported through to Mediclinic Stellenbosch for further care.

The local Franschhoek SAPS were also on-scene for further investigations.

Stellenbosch Municipality has taken the decision to cancel this year’s Festival of Lights due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This was a difficult decision to take, as the annual Festival of Lights (Liggiesfees) has become a highlight on our events calendar. In light of the pandemic and the extension of the National State of Disaster that impacts on the number of people allowed at public gatherings, we have decided to cancel this year’s event. The safety of our communities and everyone involved is our top priority. In addition, the municipality is also trying to cut down on spending, given the adverse impact the pandemic and subsequent lockdown has had on the economy.



The festive lights will still be installed and displayed. Residents are reminded to wear their face masks, sanitize regularly and to maintain social distance when visiting the town to see the lights.

’n Ingenieursstudent (25) van Worcester, is vandag in sy koshuis by die Universiteit Stellenbosch dood aangetref nadat hy ’n paar dae gelede vermis geraak het. Geen gemene spel word vermoed nie. Hy is in ’n gedeelte van die koshuis gevind wat vir COVID-19-afsondering ontruim is. Dit word nie tans bewoon nie.

On Monday 2 November, councillor Wilhelmina Petersen was elected as the new speaker of the council during an emergency municipal council meeting following the former speaker, councillor Nyaniso Jindela, resigning on 31 October. Jindela was elected as the new deputy mayor.

Reaction to incident with Stellenbosch councillor

The incident which happened at the Stellenbosch municipal office this morning during which it is alleged that a journalist of StellenboschNews.com assaulted and intimidated a councillor, refers.

What happened before and after the special council meeting was that one of our journalists asked a councillor about a criminal charge she had instituted against a fellow councillor. This is part of an ongoing story StellenboschNews.com is covering. This had nothing to do with the meeting during which a new speaker and deputy major was elected.

Referring to the incident as an “attack” is also unnecessary, but we condemn any form of violent confrontation. To ask pertinent questions to councillors on issues relating to Stellenbosch ratepayers and the management of the municipality is, however, part of the duty of journalists to get to the truth, especially in the case of public office bearers.

We are in the process of requesting access to video footage of the incident and are looking into the circumstances of exactly what happened and will comment further if necessary.

Stellenbosch SAPS are investigating a case of attempted murder after a newborn baby girl was found in a drain in Kayamandi on Monday, 26 October 2020. The investigation led to the local hospital and Kayamandi clinic where no results were found. They did not have records of the mother or the child. Medical staff confirmed her condition is healthy and stable.

The identity of the parents are still unknown and the investigation continues. Stellenbosch SAPS would like to appeal to community members in Kayamandi for assistance to find out who the mother is. Anyone who can assist with any information to find the parents of the baby can contact the Investigation Officer, D/Cst. AJ Groeneveld on 082 469 1479 or 021 809 9168/5.
