ANC disciplinary hearing against Zuma postponed to next Tuesday

The disciplinary hearing against former African National Congress (ANC) president Jacob Zuma has been postponed to next week Tuesday.

Ndhlela says he expects the ANC will agree that Zuma attends the hearing in person. Zuma, who was not at the hearing physically, was represented by former ANC’s national executive committee member Tony Yengeni on a virtual platform. Zuma was hauled before the ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee following his announcement that he would no longer campaign for the ANC but rather endorse the newly formed MK Party.

Universal Basic Income Will Replace SRD 2024, The End Of SRD Benefits & Grants
July 10, 2024

South Africa is getting ready for a major change. The country intends to replace its Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant with a Universal Basic Income (UBI), a significant shift in the country’s social welfare policy.

The African National Congress (ANC) is leading this effort. The goal is to provide regular and unconditional financial support to all adults between 18 and 59. This move will position South Africa as a leader in implementing UBI nationally.
UBI in the Global Context
South Africa’s progression towards UBI is a component of a broader worldwide discussion on universal basic income as a method to address poverty and inequality. Amid the pandemic, various nations experimented with temporary income support initiatives, propelling the concept of UBI into the public consciousness.

UBI seeks to alleviate poverty, boost economic activity, and foster individual empowerment by offering unconditional financial assistance to all adults.

KB Motsilanyane's national anthem rendition ignites spirit of unity

Singer Keabetswe “KB” Motsilanyane set a powerful tone at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday with her “incredible” rendition of the national anthem before the Springboks went on to secure a solid 27-20 victory over Ireland.

Motsilanyane is a South African actress and songstress known for her soulful voice in hit songs such as O a lla and her roles in popular soapies Backstage, Rhythm City and 7de Laan.

She delivered a memorable rendition of the anthem with her rich voice that carried the emotions of fans before the match.

What made the moment special was the final verse of the anthem where Motsilanyane paused and opened her arms, allowing the crowd to take over.

The crowd did not disappoint, their voices rising together as they sang their hearts out.

Videos of the moment showcasing a sense of unity by fans at the stadium sparked emotions on social media.

The singer's performance moved many people, leaving fans with goosebumps and teary eyes.

“This was the most awesome moment in the history of our national anthem. I still have goosebumps just listening to the crowd belting out our anthem with pure pride. You guys rock, South Africa,” Sharon-lee Johnson said on social media.

Another fan, Nicci Hattingh, shared: “standing in that stadium and singing the national anthem with the 50,000 supporters today [Saturday] was an unforgettable moment. It was so emotional, tears flowing but smiling too. So proud to be South African.”

“It was beyond incredible. The best rendition of the anthem I have heard. What a voice. What passion and stepping back to allow the crowd to take over was an unselfish act of patriotism. KB needs to be lauded for her magnificent effort and humility,” Bruce Nozaic said. Springboks captain Siya Kolisi showed gratitude to fans. “This is very special. We are back home playing for the first time after the World Cup in front of South Africa. It's beautiful.

Wolvaardt takes positives from drawn Indian series

A series-levelling 10-wicket demolition job by India should not detract from the hard work and dedication her players have shown in recent months, Proteas Women captain Laura Wolvaardt said.

The South African women crumbled under the pressure of the Indian bowlers, as Pooja Vastrakar (4/13) and Radha Yadav (3/6) destroyed the visitors’ batting line-up as they were bundled out for 84.

The hosts chased down the target without losing a wicket and with 55 balls remaining courtesy of openers Smriti Mandhana (54 runs off 40 balls) and Shafali Varma (27 off 25).

The win earned India a draw in the three-match T20 international series after game two ended with no result and South Africa clinched a 12-run victory in the opener.

“I’m happy with the series and we will take a lot of learnings from it,” Wolvaardt told the post-match media conference.

“We are happy with how we batted in the first two games.

“The positive intent was there and we have been making a lot of good strides in our batting, so I don’t want this one game to set us back with that.”

The Proteas head home for rest before getting their preparations under way for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in September.

Asked how close this group would be to the team that travels to Bangladesh, Wolvaardt said decisions on who would make the final cut still needed to be taken.

“It will be up to the selection panel back home and what they think, not just myself, but with this our last games before the World Cup, I’d like to think that was close to what we would have in the squad.”

The top-order batter said the third match was not the way the players wanted to end the series, adding they could have done certain things better.

Record breaking pair took a while to bloom

partnership that took root in Brisbane in 2015, has taken the better part of a decade to bloom.

Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel, the muscle men who patrol the Springbok midfield, will on Saturday become the most capped centre partnership for their country.

Their 30th coming together as a pairing will take them past the mark set by the marvellously enduring Jean de Villiers and Jaque Fourie.

De Allende and Kriel are relentless yard dogs in defence, but equally they are head-turning thoroughbreds.

They are now the 'old firm', a title hard earned on the back of unbridled commitment to the Bok cause and there can be no doubt they've put their bodies through the wringer.

Here are FIVE important tips when it comes to storing and using TINNED FOOD:

1. Always store tins in a COOL, DRY PLACE, away from heat or direct sunlight.
2. NEVER use a DENTED tin, as small openings in the metal can allow bacteria to contaminate the content. The same applies to rusted tins.
3. CHECK the BEST BEFORE DATE to ensure that the content of the tin is still good enough to eat.
4. If the LABEL happens to tear off, make sure that you label the tin clearly to know what’s inside.
5. NEVER leave any leftovers in the tin – rather spoon it into a suitable container and refrigerate, as the metal of the opened tin can affect the food and it may also start to spoil faster in the open tin.

Cold snap to hit SA from Sunday, with Tuesday set to be coldest morning of the year so far

A cold snap is expected to affect South Africa from Sunday until Tuesday, as a series of cold fronts move across the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape.

According to the SA Weather Service (SAWS), the first weather system in the series is an intense cold front expected to affect the western and central parts of the country from Sunday, and the eastern parts from Monday.

The SAWS said the system was expected to bring widespread and disruptive snowfall over the southern and western high ground, accompanied by damaging winds over the interior and the coastline, high seas along the coastal areas, and very cold conditions over a significant part of the country.

Cold temperatures were expected over the western parts of the country from Sunday, and bitterly cold temperatures across many parts of South Africa on Monday.

The weather service said maximum temperatures would not exceed 10°C in some areas, while the mercury was unlikely to go beyond 4°C over the high ground.

“Heavy rainfall is also expected over the western parts of the Western Cape, where flooding is likely. The public and small stock farmers are advised to take the necessary precautions ahead of the expected adverse weather conditions, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their animals,” it said.

The SAWS said widespread rainfall could be expected over parts of the Western Cape and Northern Cape from Sunday, with heavy rain leading to possible flooding over the western parts of the Western Cape.

“While widespread amounts of 20-50mm are likely, mountainous regions in the western parts of the Western Cape may see higher amounts of 70-100mm,” it said.

Widespread snowfall was expected to occur over the mountains of the Western Cape and the western and southern high ground of the Northern Cape from Sunday afternoon, but would spread to the Eastern Cape mountains in the evening.

Cop and three others, including US tourist, killed in Mpumalanga head-on collision

A police officer and three others, including an American tourist, were killed when a police vehicle and a bakkie collided head-on in Mpumalanga on Thursday.

The accident happened on the R540 road between Dullstroom and Belfast on Thursday afternoon, police spokesperson Col Donald Mdhluli said.

He said Dullstroom police received a call about an accident involving a marked police vehicle and a white double-cab bakkie. “Upon arrival at the scene, the members found that the two vehicles had collided head-on. Unfortunately, the 45-year-old police constable was certified dead at the scene,” said Mdhluli.

Two female and one male occupants from the other vehicle were taken to a nearby hospital but the two women later died from their injuries. On Friday afternoon, police received information that the male occupant had also succumbed to his injuries.

“One of the women was a tourist from the US. The cause of the accident is still under investigation,” Mdhluli said.

Acting Mpumalanga police commissioner Maj-Gen Zeph Mkhwanazi sent his condolences to the families of the deceased . “This is a tragic loss of life and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased,” he said.

'I will not be silenced': MK's Khanyile to appeal election threat sentence

The MK Party’s Bonginkosi Khanyile intends to appeal an Electoral Court judgment which found him guilty of contravening the electoral code for threatening to bring elections to a halt.

He was fined R150,000, and the order was, however, suspended for five years.

Judge Esther Johanna Steyn on Wednesday found that Khanyile and fellow member Visvin Reddy contravened four laws of the electoral code, including one which stipulates “no person may prevent anyone from exercising a right [to vote]”.

Khanyile found himself in trouble after he had told reporters weeks before the May general election “there will be no elections without MK and [its leader Jacob] Zuma”. He also made reference that “soldiers” had been defeated during the July 2021 unrest, adding: “Do you think you can stop MK? Unleash all police officers, and we will meet toe-to-toe.”

He made the threats as Zuma faced disqualification from contesting the elections due to his 2021 jail sentence, which prevented him from running for public office as stipulated in the constitution.

Steyn found Khanyile’s remarks threatened to prevent the May 29 election. “His statements, assessed in the context of when and how they were said, would have been interpreted by a reasonable and informed observer as a threat to prevent the elections,” the judge said.

“He repeatedly stated that if their demands are not met, then there would be no elections. The statements that were made by both of them [Khanyile and Reddy] had the potential to create social unrest and instability in the country.”

Khanyile told TimesLIVE with the hefty fine hanging over his head, he would not feel able to speak freely in upcoming municipal and national elections.

“One of the conditions in the judgment is that I must not repeat the same sentiments for the next five years. In 2026 we are going for elections, which means on the campaign I must not say anything because I run.
