NIGERIA - 13-year-old boy who was handed a decade-long jail sentence for blasphemy last year will now walk free.

He was convicted by an Islamic court in August for making uncomplimentary remarks about God during an argument with a friend in northern Kano state.

But a secular appeals court overturned the sentencing on Thursday, saying the child was a minor.

NIGERIA - The Nigerian Police Force has nabbed suspected kidnappers who have been terrorising Ahmadu Bello University.

One of the workers of the institution working at security department, Aliyu Abubakar, was also arrested by Special Tactical Squad of Inspector-General of Police for ‘providing’ assistance to kidnappers who have on various occasions terrorised the institution.

NIGERIA - A 29-year-old internet fraudster, Ademola Adebukola alias ‘Holy Ghost’ was on Wednesday jailed after he was guilty of four counts of cheating and attempt to cheat by a Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin.

Justice Adenike Akinpelu convicted and sentenced him to six months imprisonment on each of the counts after he pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him by the Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

NIGERIA - Ayodele Fayose, former Governor of Ekiti State, has said Nigerians would remember President Muhammadu Buhari like Americans will recall the distasteful administration of the outgoing President of the United States, US, Donald Trump.

The University’s Assistant Registrar, Strategy & Communications, Mr. Okesola Sanusi confirmed the release of the professor of Computational Mathematics and Numerical Analysis and also disclosed that he is expected back in Lagos on Thursday January 21.

In his first executive orders, Biden reversed Trump’s policies on the coronavirus pandemic, immigration, and climate change.

NIGERIA - Palpable tension on Wednesday engulfed the nine communities making up the Egbema Ijaw Clan of Edo and Delta States, as Mr Henry Binidodougha, declared himself the traditional ruler of the oil-producing communities hosting the multinational, Chevron Nigeria Limited.

Binidodougha, who took the title, Ojuaga of the clan, was, however, disclaimed by the communities, which directed the multinational oil giant, government agencies, communities and traditional institutions and the public not to deal with the ex-militant commander as the traditional ruler of the area.

The country, previously known as Swaziland, neighbours South Africa where coronavirus cases are surging because of a new Covid-19 variant.

Acting Prime Minister Themba Masuku said alcohol sales would be totally banned for the four weeks.

GLOBAL - Oregon police are searching for a man who stole a car Saturday morning without knowing a child was in the backseat and came back to lecture the victim of the car theft for leaving her child unattended.

When the suspect saw the child, he returned to the mother and reprimanded her, threatened to call the police on her and then drove away in her car, Beaverton Police Spokesman Officer Matt Henderson told CNN.

GLOBAL - The Chinese government has announced sanctions against outgoing US secretary of state Mike Pompeo and 27 other high-ranking officials under former United States President Donald Trump, accusing them of "prejudice and hatred against China."

In a strongly-worded statement published after US President Joe Biden was sworn into office in the early hours of Thursday morning, Beijing time, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the former Trump administration officials were "anti-China politicians" who had undermined the relationship between the US and China.
