The announcement on Sunday evening by President Cyril Ramaphosa of a step up to lockdown level 4 to be reviewed on 11 July ends a week of speculation for South Africans as we now find ourselves at the mercy of the Covid-19 third wave.
Ramaphosa said on Sunday that the additional restrictions will be in place for the next 14 days.
• All gatherings, indoors and outdoors were prohibited, he said. Public places like beaches and parks remain open, but no gatherings are permitted.
• Curfew will be in place from 21h00 to 04h00 and non-essential establishments will have to close at 20h00.
• The sale of alcohol – both for on-site and off-site consumption, is prohibited.
• He said that because the Delta variant was more contagious so the measures the country has in place may no longer be sufficient to reduce the spread.
• All indoor and outdoor gatherings are prohibited. This includes religious and social gatherings;
• Funerals and cremations are permitted but attendance may not exceed 50 people;
• Night vigils and after-funeral gatherings are not allowed;
• Public spaces such as beaches and parks will remain open, but no gatherings are permitted;
• The new curfew times are 21h00 – 04h00;
• The sale of alcohol is prohibited;
• Travel in and out of Gauteng is prohibited for leisure purposes. People will be permitted to return home to the province if they are currently outside the borders;
• Visits to old age homes and care facilities will be restricted;
• Restaurants will only be able to sell food for takeaway and deliveries;
• The closure of schools for the winter holidays will be brought forward. Schools will close from (30 June) and all schools will be expected to be closed by Friday.
• All contact classes at universities and other tertiary facilities will stop on Wednesday.

City residents reminded of debt write off opportunity
The City of Cape Town recently approved the debt write off of approximately R4, 1 billion for qualifying debtors as an incentive to encourage the culture of payment and to assist struggling debtors. Qualifying customers are reminded of this opportunity and encouraged to contact the City. This action was taken due to the continued impact of Covid-19 on lives and livelihoods and the much slower than expected economic recovery over the past year. Amid the resurgence of Covid-19, the City is acting to alleviate further hardship where at all possible. Registered pensioners, public benefit organisations and other entities will receive a once-off write-off. “They will be informed whether or not they qualify when they visit a customer interaction centre or contact the call centre with account enquiries,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, Alderman Ian Neilson. Ons Jabeur becomes first Arab woman to win a WTA title
Tunisia's Ons Jabeur made history yesterday (Sunday, June 20) when she became the first Arab woman to win a WTA title, beating Russian Daria Kasatkina in the final of the grass court event in Birmingham. Jabeur, a trailblazer for North African women's tennis, won 7-5 6-4 to finally claim a title after losing two previous finals.
"I'm so proud. I've struggled a lot and it was tough for me to win a WTA title," Jabeur told the crowd on the Ann Jones Centre Court. I had to go for it. I had to win this title just to breathe out a little bit and also to be the example. There are not a lot of Arabic or Tunisian players playing and I hope this inspires them to go on and do more. I want to see more of them playing alongside me."

Stop dog fighting
The City’s anti-dogfighting team has been hard at work creating community awareness of the responsibilities of dog owners and highlighting the cruelty of dogfighting. The team was formed after the Animal Welfare Forum approached the City with concerns around the rising trend of organised and informal dogfighting in the Western Cape. It consists of City Law Enforcement animal control officers, SPCA welfare inspectors and members of the City’s Safety and Security Investigative Unit. To report incidents of dogfighting, please dial 107 from a cellphone or 021 480 7700 from a landline.

Strong faith-family lose everything in fire
On Friday, June 4, the Mapu family of 34 Juniper Street lost all their possessions during a devastating house fire. It was the umpteenth time a fire in these parts not only wrecked people lives but also their belongings. It was a traumatic experience to witness the destruction though comforting to observe the family’s strong conviction and faith. Whilst untimely load shedding and cold weather worsen the situation, the family remains optimistic they will overcome this hindrance. In light of this, the Bonteheuwel community is implored to assist wherever they can to help the family rebuild their lives and home. Contact Delsema Mapu @ 065 5450 364. (Supported copy Clnr. Dancing for Change
Rivaldo Isaacs is a talented ballroom and Latin dance champion who hails from Netreg. He was introduced at an early age to this fashionable dancing and since then practices every day at Melvin Dance Studio at Janet Bourhill Complex. In 2014 he participated in his first competitive dancing competition. Since then he has scooped every possible trophy on offer. His trophy cabinet at home bears testimony to his medal haul over the years, it’s getting too small! Everything been equal, then Rivaldo is off to participate in the World Trials Ballroom and Latin Dance Competition in December in Gauteng. As usual he is training diligently to ensure he makes the event and trip a successful. Given his personal circumstances with only a single parent he sometimes battle to make ends meet. The 14 year old attends Modderdam High School and admits it’s a fine balancing act between his studies and dancing. Having reap limited benefits from his dancing thus far he is determine to finish his schooling and then plan his future path. But for now he wants to make his mother and community proud. If anyone is able to help him realise his dream both in the classroom and dance floor please contact his mother Charmaine Isaacs @ 074 0216 757 (Copy & Pic Riedewaan Salie- Convener of Street Committee Block MNP)

Commuters warned against robberies in taxis
Goodwood police have recently experienced an increase in robberies inside minibus taxis on the Voortrekker Road routes. “The corners of Voortrekker Road and Jakes Gerwel Drive, Voortrekker Road and Vasco Boulevard and Voortrekker AND Halt Road were targeted by one to three suspects who concentrate on cell phones and jewellery. These are the areas where they rob commuters and then jump off the taxi,” says Captain Wayne Theunis, spokesperson for Goodwood police. In order to secure the safety of commuters Goodwood police urge taxi commuters not too travel with expensive jewellery not too get into taxis with only one or two passengers inside, not to use their cellphones while travelling and not too resist when confronted by these criminals as they may be armed.

National Child Protection Week 30 May to 6 June
Child protection is everyone’s business
While government continuously calls on South Africans to stop the cycle of neglect, abuse, violence and exploitation of children, an even greater focus is placed on protecting these vulnerable members of society during National Child Protection Week. This year, National Child Protection Week will be commemorated from 30 May to 6 June. The Department of Social Development, in partnership with key government departments, civil society organisations and non-profit organisations that render child protection services, will run a campaign to generate awareness of children’s rights. One of government’s many initiatives to put an end to child abuse is the Gender-based Violence (GBV) Command Centre, a 24-hour facility that addresses a variety of emergencies, such as indecent assault, physical violence, r**e and child abandonment. Get help: Any suspicion of child abuse deserves serious attention and fast action. For help, call the GBV Command Centre at 0800 428 428, send a ‘please call me’ to *120*7867 #, add ‘Helpme GBV’ on Skype or SMS ‘help’ to 31531. You can also contact Child Welfare South Africa at 0861 424 453 or Childline South Africa at 0800 055 555. (Copy Submitted)
