PORT SHEPSTONE: OFFICIALS MET IN AN EFFORT TO END UGU TAXI STRIKE
KZN MEC for Transport Siboniso Duma met with leaders of the South-African National Taxi Council (Santaco), the Ugu Taxi Association, the mayor of Ugu District Municipality Sikhumbuzo Isaac Mqadi, and the mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality, Zodwa Mzindle, in order to force an end to taxi strikers in Ugu.
Mzindle alleged that the strike was sparked by dissatisfied taxi owners- and operators under the impression that they were "being targeted' by Operation Shanela, the KZN Department of Transport Public Transport.
“The discontent is aggravated by allegations that taxis are impounded by Shanela due to them not having permits, even though applications have been submitted but are held up or delayed by the same department and the municipality,” according to Simon April, spokesman of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.
Protestors blocked certain roads by using tyres and debris in various areas, including the N2 at Bhobhoyi and Murchison, Izingolweni, and Gamalakhe.
Duma confirmed that he received a detailed report from all the mayors.
“As we stated this morning, our focus is on working collectively to ensure an efficient and functioning transport sector that moves people and goods safely, speedily. and affordably. We are fully aware that many people were affected by the protests and unavailability of public transport yesterday and this morning,” said Duma.
