RESTORED LIVES: “I am now a happy person.”

Substance abuse can have devastating effects on a person’s life as well as close and broader environments. Despite the countless negative consequences, the inability to quit impacts everything around the person.

Siyanda Cibane’s life was complicated when he was younger. At a very young age, he began smoking ci******es when he was only 11. Later, in high school, he started smoking dagga, which was popular at his school. After he finished school, he started drinking alcohol. Not very long after that, he was hooked on alcohol and rapidly became a hefty drinker. His drinking habit eventually cost him his job. After he lost his job, Siyanda became very depressed and drank even more heavily until he reached the point where he lost all hope and gave up on life. In 2016, he arrived at the KwaSizabantu Mission and started following its CYPSA restoration programme. The rest, as they say, is history. Siyanda says he is now a happy person for the very first time in his life.

RESTORED LIVES: “I was in desperate need of help.”

It is natural for young people to undergo social and personal experimentation until they find their place in life. Unfortunately, during this phase, peer pressure can change them, their appearance, and their attitude. Peer pressure can cause young people to do unhealthy, sometimes even dangerous, things. The Concerned Young People of SA (CYPSA) restoration program makes a big difference in helping youngsters with their journey to restoration and healing.

QINISO KHUMALO enrolled in the CYPSAas a drug addict in desperate need of help. In 2009, a friend introduced him to whoonga (he**in), and that was when his problems started.
At CYPSA, he was embraced with warmth and compassion, finding the support he desperately needed. After completing the program, he secured a position at the renowned aQuellé water bottling factory. His hard work and dedication soon paid off, earning him a promotion to machine operator, where he gained hands-on experience with the factory’s production processes.
Today, he thrives in the Technical Department as a skilled technician. He has undergone extensive training focused on the maintenance and repairs of the advanced manufacturing equipment utilised in the factory. His role allows him to contribute to the smooth operation of the production line and reflects his growth and dedication to his craft.

RESTORED LIVES: Former gang leader spearheads youth restoration programs

Lidia Dube had a troubled childhood with numerous issues. The constant arguments between her parents initially hurt her outlook on life. Her first-hand experience in street fights led her to become a gang leader, often instigating fights at school.

Lidia felt a strong calling in 1968 to become a collaborator in the ministry of Rev Erlo Stegen (the KwaSizabantu Mission). Lidia's commitment to the ministry was unwavering. As the ministry grew and more people came to seek help, Lidia and the other co-workers would plant vegetables to feed the hungry. These humble vegetable gardens grew in the diverse Emseni Farming, feeding hundreds of thousands since its inception.

Now in her late seventies, Lidia lives a pious life as a missionary, providing help and counselling to many who face life's challenges. Her counselling is widely recognised, and countless people, including royal households, come from near and far to seek her guidance and messages of hope. She never allows anyone to leave her without a word of hope.
She also spearheaded the bi-annual KwaSizabantu youth conference, which celebrated 50 years in the field last year and has positively impacted thousands. To join this uplifting movement and explore more inspiring stories, follow Devoted Digital Magazine's page.

DOMINO SERVITE SCHOOL - My Memorable Journey

From the horse's mouth, you will hear the truth, and you will hear the opposite from the other side of an ass. One should ask the learners of a school how they enjoy their school experiences and how they shape their future. To believe mainstream media is no longer fashionable ... you will not get the truth.

I interviewed countless learners from the Domino Servite School (DSS) in Kranskop. In our new series in Devoted magazine, we delve into the insights of learners who attended that school or who are still there.
