Abuse is not always physical and it doesn’t always leave visible scars.

Most abusive relationships do not start out abusive. The abuser is often kind and caring to the victim, but over time, the abuser starts to show their true colors and becomes emotionally abusive. Once the victim has become used to the emotional abuse that makes them feel bad about themselves, they begin to think they deserve this abuse and tolerate it. Eventually some abusers will become physically abusive but will then promise their partners that the abuse will never happen again. The victim believes that the abuser is sorry and stays with them in the hope that they will change. The abuser is kind and caring for a while until something small makes them angry, and the cycle begins again.

Many people remain trapped in abusive relationships because they believe the abuser will change; most abusers will always be abusive. The only way to stop the cycle of abuse is for the victim to leave the abuser.

Numbers can’t be ignored 🙌

South African data on GBV against women with disabilities does not exist, which suggests higher risks for these women. We need to do more!
