Voting started at 6:15am at Kazengo Primary school in Mzimba Perekezi Constituency which is at Mzimba boma.

According to Malawi Electoral Commission officials, the delay came in because they were sorting transferred voters before letting people start polling, and ensuring that the machines are working perfectly.

They said the delay means the centre will also close at 4:15pm

However, voters who have turned out in large numbers are expressing hope that the exercise will be smooth.

Winston Nyasulu, 52, said he arrived at the site at around 5am, and expects to vote and go home to attend to other issues.

His Excellency The President of the Republic of Malawi Dr. Lazarus Chakwera in Nigeria

While here in Nigeria, I have been closely following the developments back home, and I strongly condemn the violence that marred recent demonstrations in the Capital.

The right of Malawians to protest peacefully is not only enshrined in the Constitution, but also a birthright. As such, both the violence and destruction of property that took place during these demonstrations are totally unacceptable and have no place in our democracy.

I have therefore directed all relevant state agencies to act swiftly and decisively to restore calm, as well as to investigate what happened and ensure that all those who violated the law are held accountable.

As President, I will be expecting a preliminary report on findings from both the Ministers of Homeland Security and Defense upon my return, which will form the basis of further actions we will take to ensure this does not happen again and that the 80 days between now and Election Day are peaceful and violence-free.

In the meantime, let us each remain vigilant against those who seek to use our right to protest as an occasion to perpetrate violence and lawlessness for political gain.

Let us not allow them to tear down the country we are working so hard to re-build.

Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds have rendered scores of villagers in Traditional Authority Wasambo and Sub T/A Mwinuka in Karonga destitute as roofs of their houses have been blown off.

District Disaster Risk Management Officer, Humprey Magalasi said that an assessment is being conducted to determine extent of the damage caused.

Magalasi added that apart from people's houses, the strong winds have also blown off roofs of several schools in the two areas.
