Made It Gully, Kept It Goofy – Reviewing 888Goofy’s EP, HOLY 1953.

Дарвин Kezührdt

This EP only says one thing—confidence is key. There’s a wave of effortlessness that exudes in every rhyme he executes. 888Goofy carefully walks the thin line between cheeky and cheesy, making each song entertaining as much as it is entertaining.

HOLY 1953 is a project not going much into detail about the negative drawbacks of the artist’s life; he chose to not wallow and search for pity. Such is moved out the way in the title track—like a short synopsis of his rap origins, how he used to battle dark thoughts, and how he only aims to prove himself wrong. He bossed up, picked himself up and headed for greener pastures.

It is with that sort of mentality that he ‘TURNED INTO A MONSTER.’ He chose to turn his raps into an axe to chop everyone with even an inkling of doubt on his skill and capabilities. 888Goofy proclaims that he’s “a gift from the heavens,” singling himself out from the masses. It seems that his motive is to harness his own style and focus on propelling himself to the pinnacle of the rap game.

In HOLY 1953, 888Goofy is submitting to the conventions of rap and trap. The EP is a much of a turnup tape as it is a project on life, challenges, and being real. He has took what is the norm and made it into his own which instantly makes him admirable and a force to be reckoned with.

Egomaniacal and Cool – A review of ‘NO REST FOR THE WICKED’ by DONTFOLLOWPRODIGY.

داروين Kezührdt

It’s always a rapper’s repertoire to be self-centred. For you to claim the ‘GOAT’ status without being dubbed by the people means an unwavering belief in your capabilities, skills, and achievements. NO REST FOR THE WICKED exudes more than just toxicity, but a type of contentment with the awareness of his arrogance.

Off the bat: this is one trapper that writes his material—10 point for that! DONTFOLLOWPRODIGY owns the self-made title and pushes it to the edge. He does not hold back in whatever he wants to say, which oftentimes comes off as obscene. The flame-fuelled ‘ICARUS’ is one example; blatant disregard for his fellow industry colleagues and utter disrespect of their work, cementing it with a line that goes, “recording in the toilet, no wonder your music sound sh*t.”

What is important for him is making sure his career flourishes. ‘I NEED’ is among the singles in this body of work that magnify his obsession with advancement. Without things like clothes, girls, attention, he feels that he’s not where he should be. The need for material possession is put on a pedestal in ‘NIKE FEELS.’ While he checks off the frauds trying to throw him off, ‘PRO keeps ticking the swag he’s got, confidently knowing that its custom—one of one.

“They never say that sh*t straight to my face, so I know what them n*ggas about” – LONER 1-800.

To preserves his authenticity, he “b[r]ought a strap and a rubber” so he keeps going for as long as it gets. But even a cool guy like him comes in contact with reality. ‘NERVOUS’ highlights his fears and the ease in how all which he values can end in a blink of an eye. As much as reality is “real,” it’s on to the next one. ‘PRO is focused on making moves and ‘RIGHT AFTER’ shows him as unbothered and assured of what he needs to do.

Like a gorilla beating its chest to assert dominance, DONTFOLLOWPRODIGY does that by beating beats. NO REST FOR THE WICKED is him shining the chip on his shoulder. He does not care what people say. This project is about him relishing the negativity he gets, making it fuel him towards his fortune. Nobody has ever made being an egomaniac look this cool.

Less on Words – A Review of TOMMYGONE’s EP ‘Something Else to Talk About Right Now.’

This being his first tape on an official platform, we must cut him some slack. It is probably his signature—whining. A project filled with crooning, ‘Something Else to Talk About Right Now’ gives the audience much less to chew on.

For the first few listens, nothing really makes sense. It’s largely infant murmurs that don’t seem to make any sense at all. In their senselessness rises a subtle wave of emotion attached to each song. Even after the 5th to 10th spin of the EP, there seem to be even lesser words.

Like the euphoric and melancholic ‘Broken Lights,’ one does not know the meaning behind it. You almost get thrown off by the line from TOMMYGONE which mentions drug use in a more woeful than hopeful way. This complements the hypocritical ‘Winter Scars’ where in his rant of reclusiveness, he calls out the negative treatment from others that he isn’t particularly fond of, yet ironically still projects the same energy towards them. This is a classic case of a pot calling the kettle black.

The good image of himself he instils upon the audience is already tarnished by the beginning of ‘Breaking Themselves.’ Again, he points out the evil others do to him in attempts of robbing him of his fruitful journey. These words, from a level-headed artist with a clear vision of his success, shouldn’t even be on his tongue.

‘Something Else to Talk About Right Now’ isn’t TOMMYGONE’s best work but has showed how he’s able to establish a narrative, making him more than just a mumble rapper but also a storyteller. In his future work, we shall possibly expect more than 12 incoherent words on a song, but a tale that captures the listener’s mind and emotions.

Change is the only constant – A review of ‘Moments’, an album by Offense

D. Kezührdt

Take this as an introduction of a man who is conflicted. A man that does everything in him to not be himself. He is what we’d call a bullsh*t artist—a person feeding off perception of the masses to avoid being themselves. Offense’s ‘MOMENTS’ is based on his ways of blowing off steam, trying to truly be the self behind closed doors.

Like each one of us in life, we come across varying adversities that challenge our very being and cause us to protest the impending changes they possess. This is the backstory of ‘BROWN SKIN’ in which what was seen as fairy-tale love turned out to be lust, making Offense realise that it all resulted in something far from his expectations. He elaborates further on this matter in ‘TRASH’ & ‘MOMENTS.’ There, he reflects on the errors that are prevalent in romantic relationships and how they’re seemingly unavoidable.

Much more than love is also the tragedy in communities. We hear of a person battling between being an acceptable figure in society – meaning giving in to the status quo – or choosing to do what’s right for it, and most importantly for himself. ‘SLIM’ & ‘FIGHT’ introduce an impressionable Offense who wants to blend in. In his search for belonging, he notices how he’s losing himself, going against his own principles.

Alas this proves how he’s just a victim of his own surroundings. Romantically and personally, the norms are instilled in the community. Infidelity, mistrust, backstabbing, selfishness, and more are what seems to make one be perceived as normal. In ‘MOMENT’ is about the past; how he’d messed up, made light of a great opportunity ultimately blowing it. But it’s on ‘SOONER OR LATER’ where Offense poetically displays the dismay faced everyday by youth in his neighbourhood. He sadly portrays how negativity and backward thinking is glorified; how self-destructive behaviour is more valued as it’s what makes you ‘cool.’ The single ‘HOME’ ultimately says that through everything he’s faced and continues to face, he has something which will always help, remind, and retain his true being.

Offense schools the audience on hard times and how they come and go. The theme in this album is about change being the only constant. Its about looking down the barrel of a gun knowing that as a mortal you can never outrun a bullet. ‘Moments’ is an album that reflects one man’s point of view in what otherwise may be seen as rumination—wallowing in one’s woes.

Crocodile Tears With Jaws Clenched Tight - reviewing URBAN YANG's PURPLE BABY SKIES mixtape.

D. Kezuhrdt

At first listen, URBAN YANG does sound as an injured lamb in need of help. He’s playing possum with the wish that we, the listeners, ward off any negativity or judgement that may be driven towards him. In his mixtape, PURPLE BABY SKIES, he does what we once did as children which is pretend sleeping so that our parents would carry us into our rooms and onto our beds.

To the ear, its melodic and soothing, reminiscent a bit, playing like an old forgotten record of your once favourite singer whom you used to listen to a while back. The songs have the right amount of every instrument; the kicks are like heartbeats with strings and some wind instruments sounding like angels whispering to you God’s best kept secrets. But that’s the genius in it because what cuts deep is what he says in these heavenly notes.

The most dominating thought in this mixtape is of a girl who constantly does him dirty. He is livid, furious, and outright pi**ed at what she’s able to do to him. Ironically, he concurrently tells all his concubines to stick it because he has lost all faith in humanity. For someone whom his father had [loosely said] advised him that no man can be an island [MUDDY INTRO], the discontent he has is amazing.

URBAN YANG just wants love, wants to be loved. Even so, he acknowledges that he is broken and needs help. Instead of reaching out in the true sense of it, he’d rather hold his chips and wait for a higher bidder. He believes that the shallow sacrifices he made – detailed on songs ASIAN, KEIISHA’SLUV 2, I NEED 2 FIX MY SOUL, BELONG, HEAR ME CRY – are worthy of some Christlike response. Admittedly the women he goes for seem like charlatans, but to expect any good from them knowing very well you’re with them for “mepako” is a definite far cry.

Negative as its contents are, the title to the mixtape gives some fresh perspective to what may be brewing inside his dark and twisted head. PURPLE BABY SKIES justifies his naïveté in the matters he is facing. What we should simply envision is a baby tightly holding on to hope. Though the grown man we see pretends to be unfairly treated and in pain, it is the innocent baby inside that he should find a way to set free.

Pressure From Everybody – Leel Weez's ‘21’ EP review.

D. Kezührdt

Like the age we all celebrate due to some faux representation of freedom, LeeLWeeZ also does that but in a truer sense. ‘21’ is both the realization of a good life ahead of him and acceptance of both the good and evil he’s currently experiencing.

He’s tired of constantly being judged and put on a pedestal not designed for him. The recurring criticism from self-made “life coaches” weighs heavily upon WeeZ, sometimes making him doubt his capabilities. Therefore on ‘Everybody’, he advocates for freedom of expression.

But, like a 21-year-old, his expressions aren’t of a collective’s goal towards happiness. On ‘Float’ he experiences a mind-numbing love that he’s willing to sacrifice for all moral and societal order. This being the absolute truth, he goes and spits on the same feelings in ‘Yanga’ and ‘Natasha’ by talking of his obsession with the multiple use of both women and substances – that is a little too cheesy for someone who wants to set the world on fire. LeeLWeeZ shows how the mind of a young adult works—ideas and idolatry.

The drug induced ‘Litty’ is a ruckus of rage and running towards the riches. Featuring Cmoe & HB Yarima, the trio says to be doing everything to be the richest in the trap, hence they’re currently the highest in the room. Such behaviour could be left to slide as he talks of the immense ‘Pressure’ he’s under. WeeZ signs off on a sour – yet structured – and very solid note. All he’s going to do is side-line all the negative energy surrounding him and just go overtime for the sake of his success.

‘21’ EP is like LeeLWeeZ’s self-crafted key with its own dents and imperfections. You know that kind of key you have to jiggle a bit before the door unlocks? The EP is how he plans on shaking up the game and won’t quit until he unlocks all of them.

Like A Phoenix From The Ashes – reviewing Rae Kruise Worldwide's ‘Keep Striving’ EP.

D. Kezührdt

Kruise keeps it kasi in his recent EP. Not only does he not put so much filler of senseless actions and exorbitant possessions he clearly doesn’t have, but he remains true to himself, his current life, and the state of living in his environment. ‘Keep Striving’ is all about running your race ‘til you reach the finish line.

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the maestro relays his testimony of all those in the hood that have done well for themselves and how they inspire him. He’s aware of how tedious the journey is hence he reminds the audience that “nobody said its gonna be easy/but we never sleep, never give up.” This is how ‘Eazy’ complements ‘SevenUp’; on both songs he encourages doing the hard work and carrying your load until it is no longer heavy, then in ’SevenUp’, Rae also encourages the street corner fruit & veg vendors to keep at it as he daps up bonke abaphandayo amid adversity.

For him, music isn’t just a hobby—it’s a job! What makes his job fun is the positive feedback from fans because they’re the main reason he’s doing this. ‘Humble’ is a tale of being gentle with others so that they too can be so unto you. Rae Kruise preaches on being who you are without changing when you see a little change—being grateful for the little that you have. And so on ‘Siya Sebenza’ the motive is clear; in any craft or occupation that you’re in, keep putting in work and you shall see the results.

All Rae Kruise is doing is striving towards perfecting his craft so that he too can be a chart-topper like all the greats who’ve done it before and are still doing it. With his music, his objective is to get the bag because he isn’t “making music for basadi” like others snais chasing fame. ‘Keep Striving’ is a project that perfectly blends and flows within itself, complemented by features that were able to stick to the script. It’s a poignant portrayal of township living and situations we go through to reach our goals that leaves one with potent question: what is it?

To Burying The Hatchet - Reviewing 'Distant Minds' by Kayso.

D. Kezührdt

"You know my black heart? Yeah, it's filled with revenge" - Perspective.

Kayso doesn't want to do this anymore. She's fed up with always prioritising other people's happiness over her own. 'Distant Minds' is a short reminder that what once was is now over.

Eloquent expression of heartache has us believing Kayso is mincing her words. The lack of drama and extravagance in this EP maintains her self worth regardless of being a total mess.

After being in toxic relations with a partner, 'HeartBreak Int.' harbours all the pain she went through. All the broken trust she experienced was due to being made to believe what wasn't true about love.

This then resulted in adopting 'Bad Habits' that would compensate for the absence of love she felt. Therefore, she'd resort to compensating just to reach the ideals of being loved which further led into being fixated on the fallacies brought by infatuation.

In the end, Kayso has had enough of being played. Realising that her thoughts of true love don't lie in the person she was dating, she accepts being OK with solitude. Being placed over the bar is too heavy for her and that's why ngwana batho a le 'Satis'.

Compromise and sacrifice are essential when it comes to matters of the heart. Reciprocating that same energy is also vital but when the other part doesn't get it, everyone becomes alienated. 'Distant Minds' is Kayso saying goodbye to someone who doesn't share the same feeling of care, love, and acceptance.

Did She Get It? - A review of Angie Santana 'By The Time You Get This.'

D. Kezührdt

The relationship dynamic is ever changing, filled with ups and downs that we all justify according to the angles that we view them. Love can't be one thing but it's results are what everyone can agree on; joy, bliss, and a much welcomed abyss.

In Angie's world, this appears to be distorted, only to favor the queen bee. Its funny since male bees don't work much in a hive and therefore she'd have more to complain about.

On songs 'Crazy For Your Love', 'R&B And Hennessy', and 'Taylor's Interlude', there's great remanence of desperation and the saddening search for attention—affection. Going crazy over your perception of love and doing so from receiving what is love are two different situations.

Such is solidified by the features on singles 'R&B And Hennesy' and 'Bounce'. Masandi (R&B And Hennesy) goes on with his smooth Chris Brown harmonious voice but ultimately admits that he's ony there to exchange nuts for some Hennessy—leaving any lady in that situation feeling abandoned. Nasi Tautona (Bounce) also inhibits the King Of The Jungle mentality and calls out the redundant and clingy antics from claims made on 'CLUA/Bad 4 Me'.

Angie Santana seems to get a sense of clarity and gains a grain of wisdom in the end. A display of growth rears it's fragile head in attempt of redeeming herself from the shame she's willingly subjected herself into.

'Alright' is a more mellow and composed song where she shows her content on loss and being okay with moving on. This being different to 'Y.A.S' because she's angry at the person she's realised has been playing her and will no longer endure the roller coaster ride.

The "Queen" becomes fierce on 'All Of This' by letting out all of her sexiness. Sultry as it sounds, the karma of being played is justified due to her, on the single, mentioning how men can't get enough [of her] and how she can willingly take another woman's man. Funny, isn't it?

'By The Time You Get This' is a long-winded and elaborate goodbye letter to a bad relationship, but singular perspective of the whole story. The album shows how she doesn't find fault in her behaviours; she victimises herself and fails to also recognise her wrongs. It being an old album we can only hope Angie Santana has seeked maturity in relationships and managed to get it.

The Narcissistic Tendencies of Peace – Reviewing Trophy’s ‘I Haven’t Started Yet: 444’ EP.

D. Kezührdt

Its interesting how this EP is this ideal symbol of mental stability and a bonafide rap masterpiece, yet has so many undertones of ignorance, self-absorption, naivete, and a huge load of arrogance. The contrast shows a battle for superiority, not only with the self but also with the world. This tape is about Trophy trying to either preserve himself or prove something to the world.

The search for peace is for Buddhists and the elderly that are content with their fate—death. Being in a competitive field where everyone technically strives for one thing – the greatest mc, the richest, first to garner fame internationally, one with the most sponsors – all this comes with stressors that put you to the test.

For someone who’d “charge a milli’ for a feature” to lose his mind when “the same n*ggas that’s callin’ you ‘bro’ [wanna] charge you for work” shows how twisted Trophy’s priorities are. ‘I Haven’t Started Yet: 444’ is a Bronx Tale-esque situation where he has reached the crossroads: will he go for love or respect(fear).

“I know my worth, even though I’m paradoxical” is one line that stands out from the EP and wraps up the ambiguous storylines that make it up. Forever Sober Freestyle is a short and potent track detailing Trophy’s insecurities, the root of his ignorance, and how his arrogance is towards certain states of being he is envious of—peace being the utmost important of all.

Even as a well-articulated rapper, Trophy can’t help but wonder who he is as an artist but most importantly as a person. The EP is a flurry of emotions that pick you up, play with you, then bring you down; it’s a roller-coaster of introspection. Though he questions his motives and whether he is worthy of having it all, all he wants is “to do what is right for my people” before his time is up.

Give Me Credit—Don’t forget My Cheques. A Review of ‘DEAD WEIGHT’ by TSA

D. Kezührdt

TSA tries to be as authentic to his craft as possible. Without dumbing down his capabilities, he is one artist who is true to their talent. He may blend it with the hottest style popping now, but its his content that sets him apart from all the band wagoning.

Here we hear of someone wanting what is due to them. ‘Umona’ and hate is something he isn’t going to entertain. TSA has found his ‘POWER’ and is not about to let go. He’s here to tell all his opps that he’s “dynamite to your cover” and how he won’t tolerate the fake support from people who portray their fandom that is supported by lies.

Suffering from stressful situations in life, TSA notes that ‘’my PTSD on a high / I don’t wanna leave this house, I feel like a burden.” Despite all the negative remarks he receives from people, he still must deal with his own problems. The racy raps on ‘WORTH IT’ perfectly clamp to the catchy loops that loom over the fact that this guy is legit and deserves a spot among the A-listers.

This man is determined to put in the work and say “screw” to everything else that may deter his progress. TSA tramples all the fake energy that some troops may display towards him. All he needs is “that fake love to get from ‘round” him. ‘DEAD WEIGHT’ is about the seasoned artist discarding the heavy burden that is linked with friendship, collaboration, and everything relating to association. The EP is about new beginnings and saying ‘bye’ to the biased mentality.

Copy Of A Copy - Reviewing ConRow$'s 'The East Side Tape.'

D. Kezührdt

Repping your set must be treated as a cultural experience; its a ritual that tells your side of the field apart from all else involved, and therefore a sense of pride peers through. The premise on the tape does not place ConRow$ in the east side, it doesn't even place him on any side.

What is there is masked envy, pipe dreams, and waiting for things that exceed expectations. Knowing the obvious nature of hiphop in the recent landscape, competitiveness has taken a backseat and gave birth to following a formula—being sheep.

Saying stale statements like "show us love when we show up to the hood," after putting out something that says nothing about the side you represent, is a slap on the face for fans and followers who've walked the same street with you.

There's nothing worth mentioning on 'The East Side Tape.' The phony attempt at including vernac rhymes only proves the fake persona that ConRow$ has donned. Its filled with the sane generic content that floods the the airways and streaming service plays.
