Today marks the 60th anniversary of Sailor Malan's passing. He passed away from Parkinson’s disease on the 17th of September in 1963 at the age of 53. After defeating the N***s, he returned home to confront DF Malan's apartheid regime. In my exploration of his life for the documentary 'Freedom Flyer,' I was moved by the resilience of this global South African, silenced by the very apartheid he fought. Sailor Malan's unwavering spirit, a beacon of hope, guided him through two battles—against Hitler's tyranny and apartheid's injustice.
Sailor Malan's journey is a call to action, especially for today's youth. It's a rallying cry that amidst daunting challenges, unyielding conviction, courage, and determination can shape a brighter world.
Thank you Mervyn Naidoo for the excellent article that appeared in the Sunday Tribune today about "Freedom Flyer" and Sailor Malan. - Desmond Naidoo
