Nigeria have allayed fears over Victor Osimhen’s fitness ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations semi-final clash against South Africa.

Napoli striker Osimhen had been struggling with abdominal discomfort and did not travel as the rest of Nigeria’s squad made their way to Bouake, Ivory Coast on Monday.

While a whole nation collectively held their breath, the 2023 African Footballer of the Year – who appeared jaded in Nigeria’s quarter-final win over Angola – remained in Abidjan under the close supervision of members of the Super Eagles’ medical team.

Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro had some fans fearing the worst as he refused to provide an update at his press conference this morning, with the 25-year-old seemingly in a race against time to be fit for one of the biggest games in the nation’s history.

But the Super Eagles’ official X account have put an end to the speculation and confirmed that Osimhen has been passed fit to feature in Wednesday’s eagerly anticipated semi-final at Bouake’s Stade de la Paix.

The attacker – who scored the equaliser in Nigeria’s opening match with Equatorial Guinea – trained as normal with the rest of his team-mates and is expected to be named in Peseiro’s starting XI.

‘Victor Osimhen has been declared fit and available for selection in the semi-final clash against South Africa on Wednesday,’ the statement read.

‘He has joined the team in Bouaké and has trained with the squad today.’
On the eve of Nigeria’s record-extending 15th AFCON semi-final, Peseiro stressed that his side would need to perform at ‘100 per cent or more’ to beat South Africa.

‘We’re doing a good job. Good organisation and good commitment, we play like a team together,’ the Nigeria head coach told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

‘It will be a tough match against a good national team. We want to beat South Africa to reach the final.

"It was a really close game, I think it ebbed and flowed a little bit. I think we opened very well, I think we got the first 15 minutes that we wanted," Baxter said.

"Our combination around the box was quite good, our movement quite good, they break away and that's obviously what they were looking for, a low block and break out into the quick players.

"They broke away, only made a couple run-ins that gave them a little hope I think and for 30 minutes we lost our way, we were really not coordinated in the pressing.

"We stopped looking for balls in between, we started playing safe and the 30 minutes, including their goal, were not really good. Then we came back from the second-half, we upped it a little bit but we're chasing the game a little bit.

"We've got a massive game against Pirates coming up and you try to keep that out of your planning when you play another top and important team. But yeah, when we don't have that, we take away the edge," he added.

"And that's what I'll say, this performance didn't have the edge. We've had the edge that I've liked in almost every game, this one we didn't have that edge, the decision was wrong, the technique was too exaggerated or we didn't make that run when we should do.
"So this game didn't have the edge, it wasn't a bad game, though we lose and that is always a nightmare."

"What I thought was encouraging was the ability to stay composed when we fell behind. Subconsciously I thought we would start rushing which happened in one match. But I just liked the character that we saw from our team. Work in progress.

“We continued playing the way we play. If you are possession-based and you want to use possession to create chances, don't change now because you have fallen behind. You need the patience and against a low block, they are waiting for one ball.

“Make one mistake and they will punish you. I think we did well second half in handling them in their counter-attacks."

Mayo (22) has become the Citizens' sixth singing of the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season after joining the club from GladAfrica Championship side, Richards Bay.

"Cape Town City are delighted to announce the signing of South African forward Khanyisa Mayo. Let’s welcome our new Citizen!" the club said in a statement on Monday.
Mayo, who is the son of former Bafana international Patrick Mayo, was one of Richard Bays' star performers last season where he helped the club reach the promotion/relegation play-offs.

While his former side ultimately fell short, the Umtatata-born attacking midfielder's performances caught the eye of City, who have now acquired his services on a long-term deal.

He becomes the latest addition to Eric Tinkler's squad, with the Cape-based outfit having already roped in Darren Keet, Bongani Mpandle, Patrick Fisher, Katlego Mokhuoane and Nathan Fasika.

Former youth international Phumelele ‘Ace’ Bhengu believes he can still make the cut at Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates considering the goal scoring troubles faced by the two giants.

Bhengu says he finds it strange that, for all the troubles in front of goals in domestic football, his scoring record he is being ignored.

The 31-year-old was most recently on the books of Bizana Pondo Chiefs in the GaldAfrica Championship, where he played just a single game after previously being with Leruma United in the ABC Motsepe League.

Prior to that, he had won promotion with Swallows FC, scoring four goals in eight appearances after arriving halfway through the season from Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in 2019/20.

"Is my scoring record not good for me to at least be having a club, considering the scoring troubles in our football?" asks Bhengu, whose 22 goals in the 2014/15 season remains a record in the first division up to this day.

"I can still play for Pirates or Chiefs and do the scoring there. Not that I am demanding to walk in and be handed a contract, but if I can get a chance to train with the team, I can earn a contract.

"However, right now football people have turned their backs on me. Every door that I knock on there is no response. I have even gone as far as asking for a trial at just about every team in the PSL and the NFD, but then it is all dark.

"I still want to play football but the opportunities seem to have dried up for me. I have even tried at Swallows, where I felt I did enough to at least earn a contract in the PSL but then it is all blanks.

"Some coaches that I had hoped will stand up for me, considering the relationships that I had with them, have also dumped me but then I am not giving up because I have not been horrible at any of the clubs that I have been with."

Bhengu also had stints at SuperSport United and Mpumalanga Black Aces.
