Varsity College celebrates sport achievers

Varsity College Durban North recently celebrated their sporting heroes for a year of excellence at the KwaZulu-Natal Regional Sport Awards recently.

Head of Sport The IIE’s Varsity College, IIE MSA and IIE Vega School, Carole Adam congratulated all winners and nominees for making the campus proud. She also commented on the diverse range of sports clubs who received awards.

Adam gave praise to All Star Award winner Joshua Ashley for winning the award for a second consecutive year. She said, "The All Star Award is the most prestigious award since it encapsulates the true essence of a student athlete - one who has excelled in both their academic and sports performance. Joshua certainly exemplifies the type of student that is deserving of the All Star Award for a second year in a row.”

Ashley, who finished third during the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Swimming Championships, and seventh in the Men’s Open during the Midmar Mile, said, “This year I worked exceptionally hard in both sports and studies. It wasn't easy with late afternoon classes, but with diligence and determination, I was able to achieve amazing results.”

KZN Karate ready for war

KZN Karate Proteas prepare their final touches ahead of their upcoming Commonwealth Karate Championships 2024. The event is scheduled to take place between 28 to 29 November in Durban.

Proteas Coach Brando Renshi, said that he is happy with his prodigies and believes their hard work will pay off. Renshi said, “My current group of Protea athletes have been spilling blood, sweat and tears during this weekend's coaching seminar, which is why I remain confident that their hard work will pay dividends.“

Commonwealth Karate Federation Sonny Pillay visited the coaching seminar and said he was impressed with the techniques and standard displayed. Pillay said, “The high level of tournament karate supported by a strong fighting spirit that was very evident throughout the coaching seminar augurs well for Team South Africa’s chances of topping the medal count upon conclusion of the Commonwealth Karate Championships on our shores.”

Pillay added that with the thousands of visitors swarming the city, it bodes well for the local economy and tourism. PIllay did highlight the concern of the local government’s lack of financial assistance towards hosting the event and hopes that this is sorted.

Junior Captain and accomplished karate national champion, Sbu Hadebe, said that his side is going for gold.

To date, 20 countries have confirmed participation with several sorting out visas. Over 250 South African athletes are preparing to represent their country against international opposition such as Australia, Scotland, England, to name a few. There will also be a strong African representation.

Keeping an eye on exams

With examination season in full swing, learners are required to be vigilant and keep their eyes on every text in order to pass. For many, this is not possible due to poor vision and not having their vision tested. To combat this, the Domino Foundation’s Education Programme and African Eye Institute (AEI) collaborated to recently hold their One School at a Time (OSaaT) programme, which aimed at providing quality eye health services to marginalised communities, particularly schoolchildren. During the programme, hundreds of spectacles were distributed to further address the issue of poor vision.

Thirty nine beneficiaries at Amaoti No.3 Secondary School were screened and received a pair of spectacles.

AEI’s Head of Programmes, Nad Ramsarup described OSaaT’s aim as the reduction of avoidable blindness and vision impairment. He said, “Around 80% of learning is achieved through vision, which is why undetected eye problems can negatively impact a child’s performance in the classroom. We know the importance of early identification of visual problems in children which can give our most vulnerable children a second chance at education, enhancing their school performance, improving their safety in public spaces, and resulting in overall well-being.”

Ramsarup explained the distribution of spectacles not only means learners can now see the board at the front of the class but also how better vision helps learners’ brains assimilate, organise and interpret information.

Amaoti Principal, Gugu Maphumulo shared her delight at AEI’s initiative. She said, “Thank you! The children’s lives will never be the same. We look forward to better performance from learners who were struggling with vision problems. You have given us hope and sight.”

Domino’s Education Coordinator, Nicky Walton, added that she is keen to hear from anyone who has the expertise to improve the education journey for learners of the NPO’s programmes and can be contacted on 031 110 0730 or [email protected]. Nad can be reached at [email protected].

A showcases of artistic flair

Durban North’s Daniela V***a hosted an art workshop, with the intention to awaken people’s creativity. Her latest workshop took place on Tuesday, 5 November at Waxy O’Connors Salta

V***a, who is also the Head of Visual Arts at Northlands Girls High School said that she has always been passionate about arts and wanted to share that with others. This led her to relaunching her own art business - Art with Nellabella - earlier this year.

“Creativity exists in all of us and I love helping people rediscover and ignite theirs, hence I have devoted my spare time to my own business. I get to teach, inspire and watch the many people I have encountered along this art journey discover the passion for art that I have. I offer art classes, lessons, tuition and more,” V***a said.

V***a said her paint workshops have gathered most attention from the public and that some of these workshops can be incorporated into team buildings, parties, sip and paint evenings; amongst others.

V***a concluded that her workshops are hosted from Ballito to Hillcrest and by the end of each workshop, she hoped that participants leave enlightened and with a creative spark.
