Sunny succulents
Their water wise design has resulted in many intriguing leaf shapes and textures, that fit right into contemporary home décor.

What’s more they are difficult to kill because they need less water and nutrients than traditional plants. Some of the hardiest succulents can survive without water for months. They are the ideal plant for the ‘lock up and go lifestyle’ or for absentminded plant parents.

Learn what the best ways are to incorporate succulents in your home, like making a cactus bowl and choosing the correct type of succulents here - getitmagazine.co.za/pretoria/

Luxury safari stay
Sitting down to a pool-side three-course lunch with Impala grazing just a few meters away is a common occurrence at Safari Plains. The pool deck is the best spot to spend your time … soaking up the African sun, taking a dip to cool off, dining and gazing out into the open savannah plains. And just ahead is a watering hole where you can catch sight of a wild animal stopping by for a drink of water.

Welcome to the Waterberg region, Limpopo and what better way to experience the bushveld than sleeping in a tucked away tent surrounded by nature itself. Think luxury air-conditioned tented suites ... two safaris daily (12 000 hectares of Mabula Game Reserve to explore!), great food and even babysitting services for the perfect family vacation.

A handful of reads...
In 1951, unhappiness is hardly grounds for divorce. Except at the divorce ranches of Reno, Nevada. Here women live together for six weeks - the state’s only divorce requirement - before they earn their freedom. Six weeks of living it up at the casino and flirting with cowboys. The Divorcées by Rowan Beaird ... all female friendship, desire, and freedom. Manilla Press

The Blue Sisters. A strait-laced lawyer. A boxer-turned-bouncer. A Paris model. And then the fourth sister ... who’s unexpected death leaves the three reeling. Grief, addiction, heartbreak all need to be addressed when they reunite in New York to stop the sale of their family home. Coco Mellors’ novel is a beautifully written story of true sisterhood - the misunderstandings, the squabbles, the resentment and the love. HarperCollins UK

The Manor. It’s meant to be a retreat for the very wealthy ... the kind of place where guests are given crystals to wear in a velvet pouch, and who attend solstice suppers in the forest. Where the owner rubs clary sage onto her pulse points and halos herself with sacred mist. That would be just before she has five shots of vodka (it’s a clean spirit!) to wash down the pills kept inside her old Ayurvedic tea tin. It’s also a place that is, on opening night, on fire. Secrets from more decade before have come back to haunt ... and it’s going to end in murder. Lucy Foley’s The Midnight Feast is just fabulous! HarperCollins

A book tour along the Amalfi Coast, rabid fans, literary rivals, ex-flames, a crazed stalker ... suspicions are flying faster than paperbacks off a bestseller shelf ... and someone is trying to get away with murder. Every Time I Go On Vacation Someone Dies is Catherine Mack’s fabulously darkly funny read. Macmillan

Kevin Kwan’s Lies and Weddings is the marvellously wicked story of Rufus, a future earl and former supermodel, who’s drowning in debt and who’s only hope, according to his mum, is to attend his sister’s wedding and seduce a woman with money. But the exposure of a secret tryst sees the family plans - and their reputation - go up in flames, leaving Rufus in a bit of a quandary. Glitz, glamour, money, s*x and murder. Such fun! This Women’s Month we’re celebrating female powerhouses who juggle roles as wives, moms and leaders. Meet four incredible women from Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa, women who lead with strength, grace, and empathy ... effortlessly and stylishly!

Meet Lornay Nel
Area Manager, Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa

Whatever life throws her way, Lornay Nel is the kind of woman who rises to the occasion. She will always get up, dress up and show up. Not just physically, but emotionally too. And she hopes to inspire every woman out there to do the same.

As Area Manager for Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa based in Pretoria, Lornay’s position involves several key responsibilities that revolve around overseeing sales activities and driving performance within the CCBSA commercial team for the area.

She wears many hats. From team management and customer relationship management to performance monitoring and reporting … these are just some of the day-to-day tasks she keeps busy with - in addition to reaching sales targets.

“The daily interaction with customers and my team is the best part of my job. The position gives me the perfect opportunity to talk to many people. I enjoy the conversations around opportunities and how we can grow transactions.”

Her biggest achievement so far? She’s all about the growth. Lornay just loves seeing her team develop, both as individuals and a unit … empowered to take over the baton.
When she’s not at the office, Lornay will most probably be found … well, outside. Think running, horseback riding and scuba diving. And, when she’s indoors, she reads about exploring foreign countries. Her biggest bucket list goal is to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. For Lornay it boils down to resilience, which she believes is any woman’s secret weapon.

“Women demonstrate remarkable resilience in facing adversity, overcoming challenges, and bouncing back from setbacks. This resilience allows us to persevere through difficult times and emerge stronger.”

On this note, she’s proud to be part of a company that offers equal employment opportunities, women's leadership initiatives, advocacy and support on women empowerment.

Her definition of success? Being certain of your purpose and walking in it.
“Life and the world are so interesting; at every corner you get to learn something you have not known before. It is in this quest and striving to stretch my limits, viewpoints, knowledge and insights that gets me up every day. Being curious is how we learn our purpose in life.”

Kim Ballantine’s memoir tells the story of her being diagnosed with a rare condition that left her, literally, speechless ... a story of family, friends and faith, and her determination to speak again, and tell her story!

In 2004, on Kim Ballantine’s 40th birthday, her husband brought her breakfast in bed wearing nothing but an apron. You could say her personal naked chef left her speechless and in fact that wouldn’t be far from the truth. It did - literally, and for years.

The diagnosis was spasmodic dysphonia, a rare condition in which, essentially, the body’s vocal cords do not respond to messages from the brain in a normal manner, resulting in intractable intermittent laryngeal spasm and severe voice dysfunction. There was no known cure. No fully understood explanation as to the cause. The cold clinical prediction was that Kim would never speak again.

Hours after receiving this life-altering diagnosis, Kim wrote on a piece of paper: ‘I will speak again. You don’t know how big my God is, how determined I am. One day I will have a story to share.’

Hot Tea and Apricots is that story. There would be many twists and turns and hairpin bends in the road to come, and many times when panic, despair and desperation threatened to overwhelm Kim and derail her close-knit family. But the biggest challenge, bigger even than voice loss and, later, a cancer diagnosis that saw her in for the fight of her life, was trying to help her children process trauma and loss at the same time as she was struggling to navigate her own utterly altered, mute world.

By day, Retha Minnie dazzles audiences with her mesmerising Spanish dance routines. But when the stage lights dim, she swaps her ruffled dress for a jeweller’s loupe … crafting some of the most stunning pieces you’ll ever lay eyes on.

A self-proclaimed drama queen, Retha Minnie grew up on stage … dreaming of becoming an actor, or basically anything to do with a spotlight and an audience. In the same breath, Spanish dancing had always been a family affair. Her mother was a dancer, so were both her older sisters. So, it was just a natural progression for Retha to follow in their twirling footsteps. Plus … there was a stage.

“It’s such a passionate dance and I’ve heard some people say they find it almost ugly. But that’s where the beauty lies. You don’t have to pretend to be perfect as long as you can feel what you dance.”

Retha has been dancing for more than three decades now, a third of it spent teaching. In 2010 she opened her own dancing studio called Mendes School of Flamenco … a combination of her family’s stage names. And she’s been loving it. She’s a firm believer that no-one’s ever too old, or too young to take up the craft.

“I’ve taught four-year-olds and 80-year-olds. That’s also part of why I love this so much. There is no real age constraint to the dance form like some other dances might have. I truly believe it’s something everyone should try at least once in their life.

Book Club ... 4 books for the week.

Oh. Heaven. A Will Trent and Sara Linton thriller. This one set in a mountain top lodge, where they’re celebrating their honeymoon. And where, obviously, there’s now a murder. A vicious storm. The only access road washed away. And a group of family and guests who are all lying. The perfect weekend read ... This is Why We Lied by Karin Slaughter. HarperCollins

Fans of Peter James’ Detective Superintendent Roy Grace will have, for years, wondered what happened to Sandy, his first wife who went missing, and who after 10 years and extensive nationwide searches was declared dead. Now James has cleared up the mystery for us, with They Thought I Was Dead - Sandy’s story. Macmillan

A private investigator. Two 16-year-old twins, who’ve returned from a visit with their father ‘different’. Another teen ... this one an unworldly girl living a curiously isolated existence in a run-down farmhouse. Throw in evil geniuses who are playing a dangerous game with technology in order to make the world a ‘better place’, not caring who gets hurt, maimed or even killed in the process ... putting an entire generation of young people in jeopardy. And you’ve got Breaking The Dark, featuring Jessica Jones, Lisa Jewell's most gripping novel yet. Penguin

Two amazing best-selling authors - Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, and James Patterson, with more than 200 thrillers under his belt - have joined up to create an unforgettable thriller. Eruption. A colossal, once-in-a-century volcanic eruption is about to destroy the Big Island of Hawaii. And a decades-old military secret could turn the volcano into something far more terrifying. It’s up to a handful of brave individuals to save the island, and the entire world. You just know there’s going to be a movie, don’t you! Century

Ankia Nel’s life has been shattered into pieces more times than she can count. But instead of giving up, she’s learned to turn those fragments into something new and beautiful each time. Now, she’s on a mission to help other women pick up their broken pieces and create their own masterpieces.

Ankia's a-ha moment hit her after a breakup last year. When she saw the lack of support for women during personal crisis after three decades in the corporate grind. She realised she wanted to be that support for others.

So, she decided to start a new chapter and return to her first love … writing. Finally finishing the book she’d been working on for over four years. A self-help guide for women that blends personal experiences with biblical wisdom.

Unfinished – A Healing Guide for Women after Divorce hit the shelves earlier this year, and its release brought an unexpected flood of inquiries and requests for guidance. It became clear to Ankia that it was time to embrace her calling. Now, she’s dedicating herself fully to supporting and empowering women through their own journeys of healing. And boy, is she thriving.

“My journey as a writer began when I was 10 years old. Writing became my sanctuary … a place where I could express my thoughts and feelings. This early passion laid the foundation for a lifelong love of storytelling and poetry.

“Later in life, I turned to writing when I lost two children and endured 12 miscarriages, which filled me with immense grief. I wrote short stories that helped me process my emotions and, eventually, found solace in poetry. This period of personal growth and healing through writing influenced my work and prepared me to share my experiences with others.”

29/07/2024

It's International Tiger Day today, and the Pretoria National Zoological Garden is celebrating.

In celebration of these big cats, and to help people understand them better, they are delighted to share some facts about tigers in general, and the tiger resident at the zoo in particular.

● The zoo’s resident tiger is a seven-year-old male named Zeus. He is named after the god of thunder in Greek mythology.
● When fully grown, tigers are the biggest of the big cats. An adult male tiger can weigh up to 290kg. Adult male lions weigh up to 250kg. A male tiger’s paw measures around 15cm across.
● Tigers are solitary creatures by nature and are rarely found in groups in the wild. So Zeus is perfectly happy being left to himself in his NZG enclosure.
● Most tigers are a golden, tawny yellow/ brown with black stripes. Interestingly, the skin of the tiger is also striped, replicating the stripes seen on the fur.
● A very small number of tigers are white with very pale creamy-coloured stripes. This peculiarity is a result of genetic mutation. White tigers are not, contrary to popular belief, a distinct species of tiger. They are Bengal or Siberian tigers with leucism (a rare colour mutation). Leucism occurs as a result of a recessive gene that causes a partial lack of pigmentation of the skin and fur.
● Zeus is weighed regularly to make sure he’s in optimal health.
● He’s dewormed every three months. Tick and flea repellents are applied regularly to his coat.
● Zeus has a special tiger bed ... a raised platform so that he does not need to sleep on the concrete floor. The floor gets chilly (especially in Winter) and tigers are prone to arthritis.
● Food is carefully chosen for Zeus to make sure he is well nourished and thrives. Bony cuts of meat are carefully chosen to make sure he does not damage his teeth attempting to get to the bone marrow.
● Zeus eats around 6kg to 8kg of fresh, raw meat every second day. He’s fed on alternate days so that he doesn’t become fat. In the wild, tigers hunt for their food, which is hard work that demands a lot of energy. In zoos, they don’t need to hunt at all, so zoos around the world moderate the diets of tigers (and other big cats) to make sure they stay in tip-top shape.
● The 2m pole in Zeus’s enclosure is an enrichment pole. His fave treats are placed at the top of the pole and he needs to jump to reach them. This keeps him stimulated and, as a bonus, is fantastic entertainment for zoo visitors who are amazed to see Zeus easily clear 2m to reach the treats.
● Elephant dung is often placed in the enclosure. All tigers love the scent of dung and enjoy rolling about in it!

In a stunning display of talent and grace, 17-year-old Isabella Godinho from Centurion secured second place at the prestigious South African International Ballet Competition recently held in Cape Town. Competing in the senior category for dancers aged 17 to 21, she captivated judges and audiences alike with her exceptional performance and dedication to the art of ballet.

She trains classical ballet with Ken Yateman and Lex Gruver at the Johannesburg Arts Conservatory, and explores contemporary styles under the guidance of Holly Gruver, the school's director, and Kim White, focusing on her balanching technique.

"I am incredibly honoured and grateful for this recognition," said Isabella, her eyes still sparkling with the thrill of her achievement. "Competing alongside such talented dancers has been an inspiring experience, and I am thankful for the support of my teachers, family, and friends who have encouraged me every step of the way."

The South African International Ballet Competition is in its 11th official year, renowned for showcasing the best young ballet talent from across the country. Participants undergo rigorous training and preparation, aiming to impress the panel of six international judges with their technical prowess, artistic interpretation, and stage presence.

The competition marks the skills both onstage as well as during ballet classes with judges observing and giving classes to the 88 students that attended this year.
Isabella's performance was characterised by her flawless technique and emotive expression, drawing praise from the adjudicators for her ability to convey a story through movement. Her dedication to ballet extends beyond the competition stage, as she continues to strive for excellence in every aspect of her training.

In addition to her accolades at the competition, she was awarded a professional scholarship to the Brussels International Ballet and a summer program in Nice, France. These opportunities will further enrich her skills and broaden her perspective on ballet on an international stage.

As she looks towards the future, Isabella remains committed to pursuing her passion for ballet with unwavering determination. For her, this is not just a victory, but a stepping stone towards even greater accomplishments in the world of ballet.

Easiest, tastiest treat ever ... frozen peanut butter-stuffed, chocolate-dipped dates.

Simply pop the pips out of the dates and replace with a half a spoon or so of crunchy peanut butter - or any nut butter of your choice.

Melt a slab of Beyers Sultry Dark Chocolate - it’s 57 per cent chocolate with cocoa nibs - in a double boiler, making sure the pan doesn’t touch the simmering water.

Once melted, give a good stir and then pop in each date to cover. Put onto a baking tin, and put into the freezer until frozen.

They keep in the freezer for ages, not that they’ll last very long! You’ll find Beyers chocolates at stores including Clicks, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Spar and Takealot.

Looking for a spot to hang out with friends and enjoy some amazing food? Look no further than Agrilla Meet & Cocktail Bar. A play on the word meat, Agrilla is an upmarket grill house and cocktail bar offering top-notch meat from the best local butcher.

But it’s not just eating out or sipping a drink … it's a whole experience. Your meat is sliced right at your table on butcher blocks, making it an interactive ‘theatre of dining’ experience … a pretty Menlyn view the cherry on top!

The menu reflects the Afrikaans and Greek roots of its owners, offering dishes like chicken livers, trinchado, and grilled halloumi. Start off with some tasty bites like garlic-rubbed bruschetta, smoky BBQ buffalo wings, or marrow bones with toast.
For the main event, you can dig into specialties like a four-and-a-half-hour slow-cooked short rib in red wine gravy, or go big with a 1kg rump steak. And if you’re sharing, their mixed grill platter with steak, boerewors, chicken wings, and sides like twice-cooked potato wedges or creamy spinach is perfect for the whole table.

And the drinks? They have an impressive selection of whiskies and high-end cognacs. Plus, their cocktails mix old-school flavours with a modern twist … like the blueberry sour made with tequila instead of the usual whisky.

So, gather the crew and head over for a dining experience that's as fun as it is delicious. Agrilla is located at Time Square and is open Tuesday to Friday from 2pm until 11pm, and on Saturdays from noon.
