NEWS: Today at 11:30 the Pretoria High Court will rule on the publishing of 2024 Matric Results.

The Information Regulator (IR) filed the urgent application after issuing an enforcement notice to the Depsrtment of Basic Education in November 2024. The notice stated that publishing matric results in newspapers breached the Protection Of Personal Information Act by processing personal information unlawfully. The regulator demanded an undertaking from the DBE to cease this practice, but the department has continued to plan for the publication of anonymised results on 13 January 2025.

DBE spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga defended the department’s decision to publish results using examination numbers, stating that the method complies with POPIA.Exam numbers are not identifiable; you cannot know who the number belongs to,” Mhlanga said. He described the R5 million fine imposed by the IR as “unjustified” and emphasised that the DBE is committed to ensuring transparency while protecting learners’ privacy.

NEWS: Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has commended law enforcement agencies for apprehending the last suspect linked to the Lusikisiki massacre, a tragic event that claimed 18 lives in Ngobozana village last year.

The final suspect, a 20-year-old man, was arrested in Qonce while en route to Cape Town. This arrest follows the earlier capture of seven other suspects, including an individual already serving a life sentence for murder and robbery, who is believed to have orchestrated the massacre from prison.

The massacre, which occurred on 28 September 2024, involved the brutal killing of 18 family members at two homes in Ngobozana village. The victims included 15 women, two men, and a 14-year-old boy. The assailants used fi****ms, including an AK-47 assault rifle, to carry out the killings.

The community of Ngobozana village has been deeply affected by the tragedy, with many residents expressing relief at the arrests and anticipation for the forthcoming trial. Local leaders have called for justice to be served and for measures to be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.

NEWS: Angry festival attendees burn down stage after Makhadzi's no-show

The event, which took place on the Day of Goodwill, descended into chaos when Makhadzi failed to appear on stage, allegedly prompting fans to react violently which resulted in equipment and the stage being burnt down.

According to a statement released by Makhadzi's team, the musician was booked to perform at the festival, but the promoter, Ismael, failed to meet the payment terms outlined in the contract.

The contract specified that a 50% deposit was required before any promotional activities on social media, and the full payment was due 14 days before the event.

Makhadzi's team stated that while a deposit was received, along with an additional R3,000 for a promotional video, the balance was not paid within the specified time frame. As a result, Makhadzi and her team were not informed of the event and she did not appear on stage.

“We did not receive the balance within the 14-day period and, as per the terms outlined in the contract, we were not obligated to perform.”
