[UPDATE ][MEET OUR MEMBERS]

This year, the South African Police Service (SAPS) observes National Child Protection Week by highlighting the work of our members who go beyond the call of duty to protect children.

This annual campaign emphasises the importance of protecting children against abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence, and seeks to promote the awareness of children's rights as enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

Today, we introduce the nation to Captain Veronica Banks, a seasoned detective attached to the SAPS' Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (SECI) in Gauteng; a specialised team within the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. This team deals with cases that involve serial r**es and child po*******hy.

Banks’ illustrious career commenced in 1990 when she joined the Service as a student constable. In 1993 she joined the Child Protection Unit, placing her at the forefront fighting crimes against children.

Banks went on to complete numerous local and international courses on Cyber Forensics, Human Trafficking and Online Child Exploitation. She also presents workshops to empower other detectives to effectively investigate child po*******hy cases.

To date, Banks collectively secured 67 life terms and 782 years’ imprisonment sentences for 22 serial rapists and paedophiles who are now behind bars for various sexual offences.

Career highlights are many, but a particular case that stands out is the sentencing of a 41-year-old father from Sasolburg by the High Court in Bloemfontein in 2018 to 38 life terms and an additional 328 years’ imprisonment on multiple counts of r**e, sexual abuse, possession-, manufacturing and distribution of child po*******hy.

This case landed on Banks' desk for further investigation after the father's IP address was flagged by an international law enforcement agency following the arrest of a suspect in the United Kingdom.

The father drugged girl victims, including his own daughter, where after he r**ed, sexual abused and used them in the production of child po*******hy.

Her meticulous investigation led to the father's arrest and seizure of various electronic devices that contained over two million images and one million videos classified as child po*******hy, depicting 19 child victims.

"Parents are urged to be pro-active by downloading and installing applications (APP's) onto their children's electronic devices to monitor and detect any suspicious online activities," said Banks.

Captain Veronica Banks is nothing short of a heroine who remains relentless in her pursuit to ensure children are safe and feel safe by removing more sexual predators from society!

[UPDATE]Gauteng Police Management has noted with concern and dismay a video that is circulating on social media showing a member of SAPS intoxicated inside a police marked vehicle.

The police have conducted an investigation and it has been confirmed that the vehicle belongs to Etwatwa Police Station and a police constable attached to the same police station drove it.

The member was not authorised to drive the state vehicle at the time. An immediate action was taken and the member has since been charged criminally with offences that include driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving state vehicle without the owner’s consent as well as reckless and negligent driving. A departmental case has also be opened against the member.

The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni would like to thank the community members who brought this mischievous behaviour to the attention of the police management. "Such behaviour by the police officer will not be tolerated. Police resources, including police vehicles, are meant to serve the community and accelerate service delivery. The abuse and misuse of state resources will not be tolerated,” said Lieutenant General Mthombeni.

[UPDATE ]

The South African Police Service (SAPS) reminds members of the public that being in possession and downloading of child po*******hy on a device is a criminal offence, this is as two more suspects were arrested for possession, downloading, accessing and manufacturing child po*******hy in KwaZulu-Natal.

This brings to thirteen, the number of suspects arrested so far in South Africa through a joint operation between the SAPS and the USA Department of Homeland Security.

This week, the SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Investigations (FCS) Serial and Electronic Criminal Investigations unit traced the suspects to Umbilo in KZN.

The 12th suspect was arrested on Tuesday, 23 April 2024. The 58-year-old man was found in possession of hundreds of images and videos of children involved in sexual acts. Included was also images and chats where information relating to boys who are available for sexual favours at a price of R2500 and a willing buyer having a choice to drug them.

The man has already appeared in court on Thursday, 25 April 2024. The suspect is remanded in custody for further investigation.

The thirteenth suspect, a 62-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, 24 April 2024. Thousands of child p**n images and videos were seized. On his device, police found images of children being sexually abused on his device.

During the operation, the Department of Social Development assisted to remove children aged 6 years old and 4 months who were living on the same property.

The SPCA was also called to assist with the removal of a neglected dog and kitten.

The accused already appeared in court in Pinetown.

The State will oppose bail in both matters.

Other arrests of suspects involved in child po*******hy were made in Gauteng and the Western Cape in 2023.

The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola has applauded the team’s dedication in removing those who are behind crimes against the most vulnerable in society.

“Being in possession, accessing, downloading, distribution, facilitating, viewing and manufacturing of child po*******hy is a crime. All these suspects face all these charges. We will continue to trace more suspects behind this type of crime. Our priority as the SAPS is to protect our women, children and vulnerable groups against those that perpetrate violence and crime against them”, said Gen Masemola.

The newly appointed Component Head of the FCS unit, Major General Mmantsheke Lekhele led this week’s operations.
