Two days after Putin launched his attack on Ukraine, I played a set in Rüsselsheim theatre, not far from my hometown. My parents came to see me, which isn’t something that happens often since my mum is 76 years old and my dad 80. When they were young, both witnessed the devastation of the second world war, and throughout my life they have told me countless stories of that period that make me shiver just at the thought. Before my concert in Rüsselsheim, I felt torn. Conflicted and not knowing what my role as a musician is in times like these. I turned to my mom before the gig, and seeing right through my doubts she said: “people need art for their soul, to keep them mentally strong. So that they remember the things worth fighting for. It’s good that you can play a part in that.” I feel lucky to have the parents I have, and to have been born where I’ve been - in a system that first and foremost respects human dignity. My heart goes to all the people who haven’t been as fortunate, and I hope they can find some solace in art through these difficult times.
