Luxury Rovos Rail Train Collides with Freight Train Near Gwanda, Injuries Reported

A luxury Rovos Rail passenger train traveling from Pretoria, South Africa, to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, collided with a Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway (BBR) freight train early Friday morning near Gwanda. The crash, which occurred around 6:15 AM approximately 8 kilometers from Gwanda on the Bulawayo-Beitbridge line, left several people injured and caused major derailments. At the time, the Rovos Rail was carrying 47 international tourists. Injury reports remain unclear, with Rovos Rail confirming that four crew members were hurt but no passengers seriously injured, while other sources suggested up to 18 people were affected.

Medical teams attended to the injured, with some admitted to Gwanda Provincial Hospital and others transferred to Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo. An official investigation into the cause of the collision is underway, as authorities work to clear the line and restore normal operations.

CAF Slaps Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns with Heavy Fines and Sanctions Ahead of Semifinal Clashes

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns have both been hit with heavy fines and sanctions by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ahead of their crucial semifinal matches. Pirates were fined $50,000 (R940,990) for misconduct and an additional $20,000 (R376,394) for failing to ensure proper security during their 9 April clash against MC Alger at Orlando Stadium. Two players, Sipho Chaine and Nkosinathi Sibisi, received one-match suspensions, suspended for a year, while team official Ezekiel Matebula was banned for four matches, with two suspended.

Mamelodi Sundowns were fined $100,000 (R1.8 million) following incidents of fan violence during their 1 April victory over Esperance. CAF found the club guilty of breaching safety regulations and ordered them to tighten security for upcoming fixtures, including their quarter-final clash against Al Ahly. Both clubs now face added pressure off the field as they prepare for critical stages of the CAF tournament.

Audi Cries Foul as Chinese Cars Dominate South African Roads

Audi has raised concerns over the shrinking premium car market in South Africa, urging government intervention to save the struggling sector.

Sales of premium vehicles have plummeted by nearly two-thirds over the past decade, largely due to fierce competition from emerging Chinese brands and a shift in consumer buying habits.

The German automaker cites high inflation and soaring interest rates as key factors pushing South African consumers toward more affordable options. Audi is calling for a comprehensive national strategy to support the local automotive industry and prevent the continued erosion of the premium car segment.

Foreign National Arrested in Bloemfontein with R2.5 Million Worth of Suspected Stolen Electronics

A major police operation in Bloemfontein has led to the arrest of a 39-year-old foreign national and the recovery of suspected stolen electronics valued at approximately R2.5 million. Acting on intelligence, members of the Parkweg Firearm Liquor and Second Hand Goods Unit (FLASH) and the Intervention Unit raided a flat in Alexandra Road, uncovering about ten large bags filled with cellphones, tablets, and laptops. The suspect, who owns a cellphone shop, initially resisted entry but eventually allowed officers inside, where they found 554 cellphone units among other electronics believed to be linked to a series of robberies in the Bloemfontein CBD.

The arrested suspect is set to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on 22 April 2025, facing charges of possession of suspected stolen property. Police are calling on robbery victims to come forward with proof of ownership to reclaim their goods, as investigations continue. Authorities are also searching for four additional foreign nationals believed to be connected to the case.
