The Plettenberg Bay Airport, closed since the end of July due to safety issues with the runway, is set to reopen following an agreement between Bitou municipality and Garden Route AERO (GRA), a subsidiary of rsa.AERO. The contractual hitches have been resolved, and GRA will assume full responsibility for the airport, including applying for its own licence. Bitou municipality will contribute R5 million towards runway repairs. GRA plans to start runway works immediately, aiming for a comprehensive solution to ensure the runway's durability for at least five years. Once the runway is repaired, commercial scheduled services will be reintroduced. The airport will also see upgrades including a new passenger terminal, extended runway, and improved fire and emergency services, with the goal of achieving a Category 6 licence, although immediate focus is on restoring the Category 4 licence to enable domestic airlines to operate[1][4][5].

A recent incident involved two pygmy s***m whales that beached at Melkbosstrand. A juvenile and an adult whale were found in shallow waters, and despite extensive efforts by authorities and public volunteers, the adult whale was returned to sea, while the juvenile whale beached again and was humanely euthanized to prevent further suffering.

Pygmy s***m whales are toothed whales characterized by their shark-like pointed heads, small lower jaw, and distinctive dorsal fin. They are found in temperate to tropical waters, typically diving deep to feed on cephalopods, fish, and crustaceans. These whales are at risk due to human activities such as boat strikes, anthropogenic sounds, and ingestion of plastic debris.

In another instance, a dead pygmy s***m whale washed up at the Keurbooms lagoon at Poortjies in Plettenberg Bay.

During the 2024/2025 festive season, 1,502 people were killed on South African roads. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy attributed the majority of these fatalities to human errors, including speed, fatigue, and alcohol consumption. Human behaviour was identified as the primary cause of crashes, with factors such as hit-and-runs, jaywalking, and reckless driving contributing significantly. The minister emphasized the need for road users to change their behaviour and obey traffic laws to reduce road crashes and fatalities. Despite extensive law enforcement efforts, including over 997 roadblocks and the issuance of 7,100 fines, the number of fatalities remained high, particularly among pedestrians[4][5].

When visiting Cape Town, it is crucial to be aware of several safety and road safety issues. Tourists are generally safe in the main areas, but it is important to avoid certain regions like the Cape Flats, which are east of the city. Driving can be hazardous due to DUI, unlicensed drivers, unroadworthy vehicles, and poor road conditions. It is advisable to avoid driving at night in unlit areas and to use common sense and basic street smarts to stay safe. Additionally, road traffic fatalities are a significant concern, with high rates of accidents and fatalities, especially during weekends and late nights.

In South Africa, particularly in the wealthy province of Gauteng and other semigration hotspots, a new criminal tactic has emerged. Hijackers are increasingly targeting victims on the on- and off-ramps of busy highways, using methods like the "tap tap" technique where they intentionally bump into a vehicle, then overpower the driver when they stop to assess the damage. This trend is also a concern in other regions, as property and business owners in coastal areas like the Western Cape and Eastern Cape are advised to remain vigilant amidst rising crime rates.

Property and business owners in this coastal hotspot are warned to be vigilant as a new security threat emerges.
