Interview with Paarl Pole-vaulter Sydney Rothman

Sydney is the 3rd in the world for u18 pole-vaulting. She is also the 1st school girl in Africa in history to clear the 4m height, and participated at the 2024 Junior World Champs in Peru.

In Netherlands last year she cleared a record breaking 4.11m jump!!

Paarl’s Geniel de Villiers drives his last Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.

Geniel not only won the Dakar Rally in 2009, he also holds the record for consecutive finishes, (21 successive participations without a single retirement), has only finished outside the Top 10 once (in 2007), has finished in the top five 15 times and eight times on the podium.

This year will be his 22nd consecutive participation, after which he will retire from the Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa Factory Team.

Geniel will be racing in the TOYOTA GAZOO RACING HILUX IMT EVO
• Engine twin-turbo V6 engine of 3.5 litres
• Power 298 kW, 660 Nm of torque
• Weight 2000 kg

Paarl residents reported experiencing after effects of an earthquake for around 15 seconds just before 3am this morning.

A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of between 5.3 and 5.5 was reported in Brandvlei, Northern Cape, and effects reaching Cape Town, Paarl, Ceres and Worcester.

The quake, at a depth of 10 kilometers, caused no reported casualties or damage.

A seismic event was reported near Paarl, and residents reported that beds and windows rattling for 15 seconds.

The last time Paarl experienced this was the 1969 Tulbagh earthquake, 6.3 magnitude, that claimed several lives. It is also one of SA’s biggest earthquake in history!

Stories of this earthquake would be sooo interesting!!

Meet Dr. Lorenza Fluks from Wellington!!

Dr Fluks was recently selected to serve as member of the Women’s 20 Summit that focuses on gender equity and will contribute to the international G20 summit hosted by SA next year!!!

Dr Fluks is a Senior Research Specialist in the Impact Centre at the Human Sciences Research Council.

She holds a PhD in Psychology, and her current work focuses on gender equality and inclusivity in Africa science ecosystem.
