CALITZDORP: Criminal cases of reckless and negligent driving, as well as the use of a vehicle without the owner's permission, have been registered after a police vehicle was involved in an accident in Calitzdorp.
The accident occurred on Monday evening, 9 December at around 19:30 on the corners of Voortrekker and Van Rensburg Streets, Calitzdorp.
A video of a Dysselsdorp policeman driving the vehicle in question from Oudtshoorn in the direction of Calitzdorp back and forth across the road and in front of oncoming traffic was sent to 𝘏𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘥. The vehicle was taken from the Dysselsdorp Police station.
No complaints of drunk driving are mentioned for investigation.
Sergeant Christopher Spies, spokesperson for the police in the Southern Cape, says - “Preliminary reports that are available indicate that the police were notified of the accident by a member of the public. Upon arrival, they found the vehicle and the victim, an off-duty police officer, who already boarded an ambulance to be transported to hospital.
“The circumstances surrounding the unauthorised use of the vehicle and the accident are part of an ongoing police investigation.”
The Garden Route District Commissioner, Major General Phumzile Cetyana, has since appointed a senior officer from his office who has already begun an internal investigation into the matter. “This investigation will run in parallel with the criminal investigation,” Spies said.
