PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Compass Rose Collective Strives to Connect Artists with Industry

Compass Rose Collective was founded by 2 multidisciplinary artists with a diverse range of skills, with industry experience totaling 30 years โ€“ but it's about far more than
showcasing just creative minds. It hopes to serve as an outpost for collaborative creation and artistry โ€“ shining light on the talent and skill that the Cape Town arts scene has to offer.

Since moving into their new studio in Salt River, Compass Rose Collective has amassed several such creatives and artists to put on their books, to spotlight the incredible talent and hunger that exists within the Capeโ€™s creative underbelly โ€“ particularly within its Woodstock and Observatory locales in addition to its native Salt River.

As a collective, it serves as a collaboration hub for young and up-and-coming artists, it seeks to bring creatives together to share ideas and crafts across disciplines to work together on different projects โ€“ from props and costume for theatre and film to eventing and floral design, and
even into the realm of the performing arts. Such is the creative spirit that a costume designer may also be a stand-up comic.

Compass Rose, however, does not only act as a pipeline into industry for creatives โ€“ but also as a platform for skills development and diversification. As a company, it thrives on the collective spirit and the idea that each and every artist has something unique to bring to the table.

'Honestly, this was inspired by our own shortfalls. It's impossible to be great at everything. We both strive to now focus on the things we are best at (and enjoy the most), while filling in our gaps by working with a superb selection of artisans, crafters, and training a generation of business-minded artists to survive in this tough economy' - Co-founder Nicola Hetz

Since its official inception around 2 years ago, Compass Rose Collective has always held the empowerment of up-and-coming creative professionals as a core value. This ethos has never been more apparent than in their latest educational initiative. The team has now debuted their series of Arts Management and Personal Brand Development courses over the past month, to encouraging and inspiring reviews.

One attendee writes: โ€˜I find myself doing a lot of PR and marketing work in my day job, but I had never once considered that the same principles could be applied to my own personal brand. I am an aspiring performer and I truly believe that the lessons I have learned at the CRC Arts Management course will be front-of-mind whenever I am working on my personal brand as a creative. Especially developing my own personal, corporate identity which will help market me as a performer. Learning these skills has been inaccessible to me in the past as I work a part-time job while being a full-time university student. โ€“ and so I donโ€™t have a lot of money to spend on personal skills development. The price of the course was well within my budget and worth every cent.โ€™

With such encouraging feedback, Compass Rose Collective is excited to announce their next workshops, taking place on two separate dates.

Dates are Thursday, 25 July and Saturday, 27 July from 10:00 to 13:00 at Compass Rose Collectiveโ€™s new studio at 19 Voortrekker
Road, Salt River. Tickets are available on quicket.co.za, priced at R220.00 per attendee.

The 3-hour course will include the following topics in addition to any questions the attendee may
have:

- Introduction to Business Plans: Learn how to craft effective business plans that set clear goals and outline strategies for success.
- Introduction to Funding Proposals: Gain insights into writing compelling funding proposals to secure financial support for artistic projects.
- Introduction to Corporate Identity: Understand the importance of corporate identity and how to develop a strong, recognisable brand.
- Introduction to Professional Email Correspondence: Master the art of professional communication through well-crafted email correspondence.

Snacks will be served.

Contact [email protected] to book a group workshop at a discounted rate.

PUBLISH'D AFRIKA Adopt-An-Author Program
A Call For Submissions

Each year, Publish'd Afrika Magazine sponsors the editing, proofreading, manuscript development and ultimately publication of three aspiring authors' works, at no cost to them. These are aspiring authors that we identify independently, whose works in our opinion stand out and show promise. The authors also have to be willing to be mentored further on the craft.

This year, the indications are that we will increase the number to 10 writers. In March 2025, these writers will form part of PUBLISH'D AFRIKA Magazine's annual Spoiling The Broth anthology (Volume 3) launch and workshop, where a number of industry experts will further help to hone their craft.

The idea is not only to help the 10 writers to publish their books, but to also inculcate in them the skills to build a fan base, and to develop themselves into brands synonymous with literature. While there is no age limit to writers who are accepted into the program, preference would be given to:

Writers under the age of 35.
Manuscripts must be written in English
Novels
YA Fiction
Short story collection
Memoirs/autobiography
Self-help books
Only open to SADC countries
We will not accept poetry or religious manuscripts at this time.

The PUBLISH'D AFRIKA's Adopt-An-Author Program was established in 2021, with the publication of, amongst others, Zeripah Amoni's book, I Am Also A Woman. The project was wholly funded by Mr Success Moripa, of Moripe Group of Companies. The project gained momentum with the publication of Matumelo Mafoko's book, Through The Silent Tsunami. Matumelo's project was funded by PUBLISH'D AFRIKA, after a sponsor pulled out.
Anathi Kom's poetry anthology, A Tree of Life, soon followed. This was a collaboration between PUBLISH'D AFRIKA and the University of Fort Hare. Anathi has gone on to make a name for herself, also becoming a contributor to PUBLISH'D AFRIKA Magazine's Spoiling The Broth anthology Vol1.

How to get spotted by PUBLISH'D AFRIKA Magazine scouts? In this day and age, writing talent alone is not enough to guarantee success as an author. Authors now have to unashamedly market their crafts to death. You no longer just have to sell your book, but also sell yourself as a brand. Put yourself and your work out there. Get tongues wagging, be in people's faces and hog the spotlight, in a positive way of course.

Those are the people we are looking for; scribes who do not think publishing a book alone is enough. Writers who have laid the foundation and now need to be met halfway. Writers who are prepared to work equally hard for the success of their projects.

Unsolicited manuscripts will not be accepted. However, writers are welcome to send us a synopsis of their work (no longer than two pages, Times New Roman or Calibri 12), along with one chapter, an author bio and a detailed marketing plan they have put together.
Do you have numbers that you can show us? A fan base or following that would readily consume your work should it be published? Basically, can you show if there will be a return to the investment PUBLISH'D AFRIKA might make on you and your work?
Submissions open on 18 June 2024 and will close on 18 August 2024. Send your submissions (synopsis, one chapter, an author bio and detailed marketing plan only) to Sukoluhle Nontokozo Mdlongwa at [email protected].

PUBLISH'D AFRIKA Chronicles:
Book 1: I Am Also A Woman
By Zeripah Phiri
_______
"I was already married when I discovered that I suffered from MHRK, which meant I was born without a womb and couldn't conceive even if I wanted to," says Zeripah. "But already, I had wasted thousands on zangoma, false prophets, quacks and traditional healers, who all had convinced me that they could cure me. One sangoma even instructed me to insert a coarse corn cob into my va**na three times a day, in a bid to widen my va**nal walls."
"Shortly after I published the book, I even got offers from men who vowed that their manhoods were divine and that they could give me a baby after just one night in bed with them."
Zeripah's father-in-law, meanwhile, urged his son to get a second wife as he couldn't bear the thought of, as he put it, "a woman who is similar to a piece of furniture occupying space in my son's house'".

A Woman's Essence Book 1 and 2
_____
"Nash may be dead, but there's still plenty of wealthy men like him prowling the Sandton night life, clubs and restaurants for young beautiful women," said Grace. "They don't mind spending a fortune on a woman - as much as R50K a month and an apartment - but be warned, it is not just your curves and pointy breasts they are buying. They are also buying your soul. It's happened to me." - Grace Nkosi

______

He asked, "So, how was it like interviewing a hardened criminal and murderer from behind the thick walls of a maximum security prison?"
For starters, Grace Nkosi wasn't a hardened criminal. She was a beautiful, curvaceous wannabe actress turned slay queen, who couldn't resist the lure of the glitzy Sandton streets and the deep pockets of the mostly pot-bellied men who spent with careless abandon. But then, when she met a young and successful businessman, Nash Nemutandani, she believed she had hit the jackpot. With as much money as the pot-bellied old men Grace used to date, Nash was handsome with biceps to boot.
What followed was a whirlwind romance that catapulted Grace to the life of the rich and famous. She could now go to Cape Town for breakfast, Durban for lunch and Dubai for a weekend excursion, all at the drop of a hat. She was finally living the life she had been dreaming about...
Until she discovered the real source of Nash's millions, and that the life of luxury she has been living has come at a price for five other beautiful young women who have previously been in Nash's life. She, too, is about to pay a similar price - a price that would cost her for the rest of her life...
A Woman's Essence Book 1 and 2 tells the real-life story of Grace Nkosi, who is currently serving a 25-year sentence for the murder of her heartthrob, Nash Nemutandani. Her story made headlines in 2017 shortly after the gruesome murder. In a three-week interview from behind bars, she told former Daily Sun Bureau Chief turned publisher, Thokozani Magagula, the events that led to the brutal murder. With her story, she hopes to alert other young women of the sodded secrets that lurk in waiting in one of South Africa's richest suburbs.
"It is not all that glitters that is gold," she had said. "You might think you are chasing these wealthy men and securing the bag, only to discover that you are in fact have been the prey all along. I know all this because it happened to me."
