When floods overwhelm roads, bridges and communications, helicopters become the backbone of emergency response.

From rescue and evacuation to medical support and reconnaissance, aviation assets are critical in large-scale flood disasters. With climate events increasing, preparing HEMS crews for these realities is no longer optional.

Speaking at the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) Annual General Assembly in Luanda, African Civil Aviation Commission AFCAC Secretary General Adefunke Adeyemi described connectivity as a practical measure of how well aviation policy is translating into operational reality across Africa.

Ms. Adeyemi outlined four pillars guiding AFCAC’s work: Accessibility and Connectivity, Affordability, Sustainability, and People. Progress under SAATM is visible where market access is standardised, routes and corridors emerge, schedules improve and cargo moves where it matters.

However, affordability remains a systemic constraint, driven by the total cost of operations rather than airline margins alone.

Adeyemi also highlighted the need to address infrastructure gaps, invest in sustainable systems and close the skills gap by creating opportunities for young professionals and women in aviation.

Her message to airlines was direct: lean in to SAATM, cooperate more deeply, share data, and turn policy commitments into schedules, services and full cabins.

At the recent Annual General Assembly of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) in Luanda, International Air Transport Association (IATA) Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, Kamil Al-Awadhi, outlined both the growth momentum and the structural constraints shaping African aviation.

Africa is leading global passenger and cargo demand growth, yet the sector continues to face weak profitability, high operating costs, safety performance gaps, regulatory fragmentation and persistent blocked funds.

Looking ahead, Al-Awadhi confirmed that International Air Transport Association (IATA) will host a Focus Africa event in Addis Ababa at the end of April 2026, where new safety initiatives targeting airlines, airports and civil aviation authorities will be launched. These measures are intended to drive tangible improvements in safety performance across the continent.

The African Airlines Association heralds a transformative milestone in African aviation with the full operational deployment of Free Route Airspace (FRA) in the West and Central Africa (WACAF) region, effective 30 October 2025.

Transitioning from trials launched in November 2023, the initiative enables airlines to plan and fly User Preferred Routes (UPRs), supporting more direct routings, reduced fuel burn, shorter flight times and lower emissions. African Export Import Bank - Afreximbank has supported the FRA initiative since the trials began, in line with its Memorandum of Understanding with AFRAA and the objectives of SAATM and AfCFTA.
