Class in session at self-defence workshop

In the lead-up to the 11th Commonwealth Karate Championships, 150 disadvantaged children participated in a self-defence and karate discipline workshop conducted by internationally celebrated Karate Senior Instructors (Senseis).

The workshop, which preceded the Championships, was hosted by the Shotokan Karate International South Africa (SKISA) Trust in partnership with Karate South Africa (KSA) as part of their legacy project. Team South Africa went on to finish second overall in the Championships, securing 18 gold medals.

The workshop featured international masters, including Cameron King from Barbados, Youdish Bhunjun from Mauritius, and Amy Conell from Scotland.

SKISA Trust founder and KSA president, Sonny Pillay said that the programme set the tone for the Championships. Pillay explained that the project was primarily a social outreach programme aimed at providing less fortunate youth from disadvantaged communities with a free Development Basic Self Defence Skills workshop.

In addition to the workshop, the youth, many of whom hail from informal settlements, were provided with refreshments and a hamper as a takeaway.

"The Commonwealth Karate Family members from across the Commonwealth Diaspora will remember the Championships for generations to come partly due to the Legacy Project," concluded President Pillay.

Manager arrested for murder of kidnapped employee

A 37-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 21-year-old woman who was kidnapped on December 25, 2024.
According to police reports, the woman was last seen leaving a restaurant in Umhlanga with a male companion in the early hours of December 25. A case of kidnapping was opened after she failed to return home.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said, "Thorough police investigations uncovered the identity of the man who was seen leaving the establishment with the missing woman. During the investigations, it was discovered that the man, who was her manager at work, took her to his home at Amaotana area in Inanda. The two reportedly had an altercation, and the man allegedly strangled her to death and buried her body in his yard."

The suspect was arrested on Saturday morning, January 4, and will appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court facing charges of kidnapping, murder, and defeating the ends of justice.
