Sol Plaatje University Rugby Club commenced the 2024 rugby season with their inaugural friendly match in Bloemfontein against the formidable and esteemed Old Trallies team. This marks the Kimberley outfit's debut game as they embark on their journey towards the USSAs, aiming to contend for the Varsity Shield in 2025.

Additionally, the second team from SPU displayed remarkable passion on the field, despite ultimately losing with a score of 26 to 21 points, as Old Trallies managed to score twice against the run of play. The players from the second team showcased a spectacular brand of rugby, leaving us eagerly anticipating what the team will continue to deliver throughout the rest of the year.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the performance of SPU's first team, who stole the show right from the start by taking control of the game. They provided the spectators with a memorable display, showcasing dominance throughout. Maintaining relentless pressure, the team kept their foot on the gas for the full 80 minutes, making it challenging for the Old Trallies first team to secure their two well-deserved tries. Despite the final score of 33 to 14, which doesn't fully reflect their dominance, as SPU's first team missed out on some scoring opportunities, they aim to reignite hope in our Diamond City and strive to qualify for the prestigious Varsity Shield tournament.
