The ANC in the Northern Cape has won back control of the Hantam municipality in the Calvinia area in a crucial by-election yesterday. The DA won the ward during the local government elections in 2021. Northern Cape ANC chair, dr Zamani Saul says this is the third municipality they've regained in by-elections in the last three months. They regained Kheis municipality is an October by-elections, the Karoo Hoogland municipality in a by-election in early December and Hantam municipality.

A vehicle crash at Richmond in the Northern Cape has claimed the lives of two people. A 16-year-old teenage girl and 61-year-old man died at the scene of the crash. Three people who include a 10-year-old boy are being treated for their injuries at the local De Aar Hospital. Police say the crash happened on Thursday, when a sedan veered out of its lane, crashing into a truck.

Sol Plaatje municipality in the Northern Cape is on a drive to install smart meters in an effort to curb theft of electricity and disconnect those tampering with the supply of electricity. Last month, National Treasury approved a grant of R100 million to allow for the roll-out of over 12 000 electricity smart meters. The smart meters drive follows a process of getting consumers to update their meters in the past month.

A Northern Cape man, who allegedly r***d and killed his 11-year-old niece, is expected to appear in court on Wednesday. The 38-year-old was arrested on Sunday after the body of Tshireletso Sandlana was found lifeless in the family home. The Grade 4 learner, who was an orphan, lived in Jan Kempdorp with her extended family. Her mother died three years ago.

Political parties in Northern Cape are calling for the Head of the Department of Health, Dr Dion Theys, to be fired. This follows the dismissal of his appeal by the Northern Cape High Court after his guilty verdict on three counts of contravening the Public Finance Management Act. Dr Theys was convicted by the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Kimberley in 2023. He was sentenced to a jail term of three years, with an option of a fine of R150 000, payable in instalments.

Businesses and artists in Kimberley in the Northern Cape have embarked on the daunting task of revamping a famous old theatre.
It was the first building to house the School of Mines, which later became Wits University in Johannesburg. The theatre was locked two decades ago and has been stripped of almost all its valuables. It has become a security threat to residents and businesses nearby, as thieves and s*x workers have turned it into a crime den. The current revamp project is being funded by residents and local businesses who want to return the theatre to its glory days.
