A man who r***d a woman behind the Correctional Services centre in Kimberley in the Northern Cape has started to serve a 15-year jail term. The Kimberley Regional Court sentenced 22-year-old Lebogang van Wyk on Friday. He had been found guilty of r**e and robbery. Van Wyk had r***d a 20-year-old woman and robbed her of her handbag and cell phone in August 2020. Provincial police spokesperson, Molefi Shemane says the man was arrested in January 2021.

Several Spaza shops in Upington in the Northern Cape, are allegedly, selling liquor to the public and allegedly even to minors.
This is in contravention of several local bylaws and criminal laws.

The murder trial of Alberto Matthews, accused of killing his ex-wife Mandy Bailey is nearing conclusion. The State closed its case today after calling two expert witnesses — a ballistics expert Sematla Phela and forensic pathologist Lemaine Fouche. In her testimony, the ballistics expert told the court that the bullet and cartridge cases she received as evidence were fired from one firearm, connecting them directly to the weapon linked to the accused. Bailey's eldest daughter, Erin Cupido says the family is pleased with how the witnesses handled their testimony and with the overall progress of the case.

"Today was a good and productive day in court. today the state has officially closed its case. But so far, we are happy with what the State has done for us we are happy with the evidence they brought forward the witnesses did exceptionally well, and we are very happy with what we have receive so far from the state side. Justice is in sight, and we are really happy, and we are looking forward to putting an end to this very soon," says Cupido.

A 44-year-old Northern Cape man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for ra**ng a 19-year-old woman in 2019. The Prieska Regional Court heard that the convicted man offered to accompany a r**e survivor home, however, he pushed her into a ditch, sexually assaulted her and fled the scene. Provincial police spokesperson, Timothy Sam says the convict's name will be recorded in the National Register for Sexual Offenders.

Khoi and San communities say they are unhappy with the lack of progress made following a Human Rights Commission investigative report released almost eight years ago. The report, released in 2017, recommended, among other,s that the word Coloured should be scrapped from official documents, Khoi and San leaders be recognised and steps be taken to protect and conserve the languages. The Mothibistad Magistrate's Court in the Northern Cape has ordered that a man accused of killing a woman and her son in an attempted r**e case be sent for mental observation on Friday. 28-year-old Keobakile Matshidiso was arrested last week after he allegedly stabbed and hacked to death Sylvia and Phillip P**e. 9-year-old Phillip P**e was caught in the firing line when he reportedly tried to protect his mother from the would-be ra**st. Provincial NPA spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane says they are opposing bail.

"The accused has appeared in the Mothibistad Magistrate's Court where he is facing two counts of murder. The matter is postponed to the 31 of October 2025 for the accused to be sent for one day observation. He remains in custody until his next court appearance," says Senokoatsane.

The trial of a Kimberley man accused of killing his ex-wife in December 2023 was postponed to Tuesday due to his legal representative's absence. The Northern Cape High Court has set aside this week for the trial. The fatal shooting happened on Christmas Eve almost two years ago and has been dogged with many delays due the accused changing is legal counsel often. The family of the late Mandy Bailey says they are tired of the endless delay tactics and postponements.

The Civil Aviation Authority is probing the cause of a fatal helicopter crash that claimed the lives of three men at Danielskuil in the Northern Cape. The men aged between 23 and 34 died when their helicopter crashed yesterday afternoon. Police spokesperson, Cherelle Ehlers says a case of culpable homicide is also under investigation.

Young dancers who participated at the annual dance pages festival in Kimberley say the festival assists in keeping dance alive. The annual festival was founded to create a performance and experiential platform for dancers in peri-urban, rural and under-served towns. As the festival created a platform for choreographers and dancers to have their voices heard in the industry, about 70 dancers from different organizations were featured including a group of dancers from Namibia.
