The route going to the Kokonje Island of the Makgadikgadi Pans. We left our campsite at Mowana and drove on the A3 in a northwesterly direction for about 10kms going through the village of Dukwi.

Just after the village at the Veterinary Checkpoint, we turned left onto the cutline and then drove f9r about 40km on a Southeasterly direction going through the dry rivers of Mosetse and Lepashe. These rivers are ephemeral, which means they only flow during the wet season. Both these rivers discharge into the Sowa Pans of the Makgadikgadi.

Watching the Big Ones in the wild at such close range is a marvel that left my jaw hanging. Remember, is in the wilderness in Botswana, so these are not domesticated elephants.

We spent an entire day at this place enjoying this spectacle put up by these elephants as they come to this waterhole to cool off and drink water.

Kicking up a moerse dust on the Makgadikgadi Pans at Kokonje Island. The Makgadikgadi Pans is the largest salt pan in the world. It is situated in the dry Savannah on the northeastern side of Botswana.

Visiting this wonder was for me, indeed, ticking a bucket list. My mates from the Landcruiser Club Botswana and I chose the lesser visited Kukunje Island because of its serenity. What an epic time we spend on the pan.
