Joburg in one word? In 2024, we quizzed 40 fascinating personalities for our series, from artists and entrepreneurs to thinkers, couchsurfers, craftivists, and placemakers. When asked to describe the city, their answers were as diverse as you’d expect. But there was one word that came out tops: dynamic. Join us as we revisit some of the quotes that made us laugh, cry, and fall in love with this frenetic, electric, exasperating, and unapologetic city all over again: https://bit.ly/MyJoburgBestInterviews2024

January isn’t just about beating the back-to-work blues – it’s also about making your rands stretch after those holiday splurges. Even in the City of Gold, having fun needn’t be costly. Explore public parks, find great restaurant deals, or take an art tour. There’s plenty to enjoy on the cheap.

What’s happening in Joburg’s culinary scene? A sandwich chain with a cult following gets ready for Rosebank, while many of the city’s favourite restaurants are on the move. Chef Candice Philip brings graceful plates to The Houghton Hotel with fine dining spot Cyra Restaurant, and a brand-new kid on the culinary block comes to Craighall Park, all aflame.

A high tea in high demand is now a permanent fixture at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff Johannesburg. Plus, Norwood welcomes friendly Ethiopian fare, and say hello to a cute coffee shop called Kohi (from the man who made vintage denim a Johannesburg staple) that’ll keep you coming back to 44 Stanley Avenue. Illovo’s got fresh bars to light up the night, and the Joburg institution that is Kitchener’s is here to stay – with a cheesy twist.

Corporate advertising covered an iconic Dbongz_one mural of Esther Mahlangu in Maboneng. Damaged, but uncovered, we are left to wonder… who owns the city?

In an Instagram post on Wed, Jan 15, lamented, “My heart is sore. My favourite piece by my favourite artist is now covered. I’m sure the intentions are good, but there was nothing ugly and needing cover about that work of art.”

The Standard Bank wraps that covered up Dbongz’s artwork declared “We Love These Streets” with a call to action to keep the city clean, sending an ironically mixed message. “Are the streets being cleaned of us?”, was Dbongz’s own question to the bank, and many have expressed their horror at seeing an important contribution to the city so carelessly erased.

To call this situation unfortunate is to sweep the gravity of it under the rug. And yet, we do want to make the case for stopping, listening, and learning, rather than leaping to conclusions and pressing the cancel button. Joburg is a complex patchwork of communities, a place largely without official stewards and no ultimate ownership. The streets and boardrooms don’t meet easily – and that needs to change.

If we are to be here, in this leaky boat together, we need to learn to protect the fragile things that add beauty to what is a broken-down city, and seek direction and work together with those who know these streets. The city needs us all to save it.

200 black and white prints unearthed by Michael de Nobrega at a Mossel Bay antique shop have brought the work of a pioneering Joburg portrait photographer Sara Buijskes to the fore. Despite her career that spanned decades in the 1900s, working from a studio at the Barbican building in Rissik Street, she remains relatively unknown in the local canon.

A rare, one-day-only exhibition of her work on Fri, Jan 24, organised by the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation seeks to change that.

Buijskes’ images have been described as unique, creative, and outstanding. She made striking use of light and shadow to capture the essence of her subjects – with a particular affinity for extravagantly bearded men. The rediscovery of her work marks a welcome addition to the country’s repository of portrait photography.

Join the JHF for the showcase at Rand Club with a talk by South African photo historian Carol Hardijzer on Fri, Jan 24 from 17:30. Book your tickets here: https://bit.ly/JoburgPhotographerSaraBuijskes

Return. We always do. To our homes, to our places of work, to our people. To a city that traverses the entire spectrum: terrifying and beautiful. And a chance to greet it anew. Cue Sam Nhlengethwa’s loving portrait (top pic) of our imperfect city, which makes us wonder: what would be different if we began to think of the ground we walk on as sacred?

Loving Johannesburg doesn’t ask us to see past its problems, but it does implore us to imagine what’s beyond. A great number of those who live here do just this. Local heroes operating on every scale – and getting their hands dirty to make change happen.

We tip our hats to them in our first newsletter of 2025. Read it here:https://bit.ly/TheLatestNewsletter-Jan162025
