REVIEW | "The performance felt like a pastor on a pulpit, sharing his sermon with the congregation. As he ascended, the audience moved with him; as he descended, they followed—trapped in an endless trance, breaking into cheers or falling into tears. There were moments during the layering when the room fell into a deafening silence, only for a harrowing hum to pierce through and settle in our hearts as harmony," writes Jonathan Lefenya https://bit.ly/3EGR5AK

Phinda Mzala | "It has been 27 years since the Poet Laureate of Soweto, Ingoapele, left this world, yet his work remains a clear mirror held up to our shared humanity. Instead of merely responding to Ingoapele, Mak Manaka will resurrect his poems, accompanied by two djembe drums (Gontse Makhene and Lebohang Mokhela) and DJ Skwash." https://bit.ly/4geKf2t

On Women, Zulu Kings and Marital Issues |"Just four years after ascending the Zulu throne in 1948 at just 24 years old, Cyrprian Bhekuzulu Nyangayezizwe kaSolomon was embroiled in a scandal that threatened to upend his short reign. Before ascending the throne, the then Prince had married two women. Queens Priscilla Masuku (who bore him no male children) and Thomozile Jezangani Ndwandwe (a direct descendant of Chief Zwide KaLanga, one of King Shaka’s most formidable foes before the creation of the Kingdom).

Because of her elevated status, Queen Thomozile became Cyprian’s Great Wife. And shortly after his Coronation, Thomozile bore Cyprian a son – future heir, Goodwill Zwelithini ka Cyprian.

But shortly after becoming King, the young King Cyprian became infatuated with a divorced commoner and mother of two who was nearly twice his age. His affair with this woman (Joyce Thokozile Jali) enraged the royal family. And leading the charge against Cyprian was his uncle and former Regent, Prince Arthur Edward Mshiyeni kaDinuzulu who had been Regent or uMntwana Omkhulu from 1934 to 1948. https://bit.ly/40yZizi

"The idea of black people as a collective having to work together as a group to deal with white power is reminiscent of Ture’s definition of Black Power within the context of the US. This is what Mabogo More calls “black solidarity.” Unlike Neville Alexander, who emphasized the US origin of Black consciousness, Mangcu (2017) emphasizes its Indigenous origin. Mangcu (2017) does this by tracing the rebellious spirit of Biko to Xhosa warrior kings such as Hintsa. But Mangcu omits to mention the fact that the Indigenous people under Hintsa regarded themselves as Abantu as opposed to black people of Biko’s black consciousness." https://bit.ly/4hcubim

Wehla nini ukuya ekhaya? |"The migrant labour system’s most pernicious legacy is that cities are not 'home'. For generations, the township-mining-hostel-factory dynamic conditioned workers to view urban areas as temporary spaces for earning a living, not for building a life. This mindset persists today, with many South Africans oscillating between rural and urban areas. While some argue that this movement reflects cultural ties to ancestral land, it is crucial to recognise that these patterns were deliberately engineered to serve the interests of capital." https://bit.ly/3BOf4Nm

Join Us for a Significant Book Launch Event!

On the 5th of December 2024 we celebrate the centenary of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe's birth with the launch of One Race: The Legacy of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe at Lit.Culture Books, Breezeblock Café, Brixton, Johannesburg, starting at 17:30.

This event, hosted by Skotaville Academic Publishers; Lit.Culture; and LAPA Project Space, offers a unique opportunity to reflect on Sobukwe’s enduring legacy.

Written by Professor Luvuyo Mthimkhulu Dondolo, One Race: The Legacy of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe provides captivating intel on Sobukwe’s vision for African unity and self-determination. Professor Dondolo goes on to emphasize the importance of Sobukwe’s ideas, which remain misunderstood and underexplored in academic discourse. His meticulous research further incorporates Sobukwe’s speeches, family archives, and oral histories, which all shed light on the significant gaps in our understanding.

The evening will feature a keynote address by Professor Dondolo, a panel discussion with leading thinkers, and performances by the Katleho Mollo Trio and poet Mak Manaka followed by a book signing to wrap up the event.

"The current situation within the EFF is not merely a political crossroads; it’s a battle for the soul of the movement—an urgent effort to steer it back onto the right path, the path of uMkhonto weSizwe, the spear of Shaka Zulu. This is about far more than positions or personalities; it’s about legacy, principles, and the heart of a movement that must, now more than ever, stay true to its roots." - Phurah Jack

"As an incisive, indefatigable thinker and writer, as well as a revolutionary and guerrilla fighter in the Algerian Revolution, Fanon significantly contributed to the fight against the globalised terror of white supremacy. However, Fanon’s greatest contribution is perhaps in how he imbued Black people with the cognitive confidence not only to reimagine consciousness but also to reimagine our being and the world." - Veli Mbele

"On 4 November 2024, the University of Johannesburg’s Bunting Road Campus will host a powerful and provocative colloquium, “South Africa Reflects: 30 Years of Democracy.”

The one-day event assembles an impressive mix of scholars, activists, and artists, each examining the legacy of South Africa’s democratic journey while probing the path that lies ahead. More than an academic exercise, this is a forum to confront the critical issues that South Africa faces—glaring economic disparities, political upheavals, and the ongoing struggle to fulfil the promises of liberation. Lit.Culture Books will be on-site, curating literature that captures South Africa’s complex history, from colonial roots to contemporary realities, providing essential context for these crucial conversations." - Thami John

Andiyithandi Lento Endiyityayo: Notes On Imvemnyama’s Sawa Street

"What we get with Sawa Street is a witty analysis of black life, the precariousness of it all, the unthought that remains in the margins of all conceptions. We also get a detailed analysis of how black life unravels itself and how we suffer without relief. Lamenting what the people are given to eat, Imvemnyama exclaims “andiyithandi lent’ endiyityayo, ngob’ isour (sawa) lent’ endiyityayo,” explicating the unsavory ways of living that black people are subjected to.

Lent’ isour (sawa), lent’ isour (sawa), lent’ injani? This we would argue encapsulates the theme of the song." - Mkhululi Mabusela & Mbe Mbhele
