I was Silenced and Gagged.

An Unprecedented Move to Eliminate Communication with Loyal Listeners.

In the world of radio, popularity can sometimes spark not just admiration, but also envy and jealousy.

My journey in the industry was marked by such challenges.

As my show began to garner an unparalleled following, attracting a dedicated group of listeners who tuned in religiously, it became clear that my growing popularity was not met with universal support within the station.

My former bosses, perhaps feeling threatened by the burgeoning success and the significant lead my show had in terms of followers, made the unfortunate decision to stifle the very communication that had brought listeners so much value and enjoyment.

Instead of celebrating the achievement and leveraging the momentum for the benefit of the entire station, they chose to dismantle the very structure that supported our thriving community.

This move was a reflection of their struggle with envy and jealousy. They couldn't stand the spotlight that shone so brightly on my show, and their way of dealing with this was to eliminate the direct lines of communication with our loyal audience. It was a disheartening experience, as the goal should always be to uplift and support each other's successes, rather than undermine them.

Despite these setbacks, I remain committed to bringing inspiring and engaging content to my listeners, undeterred by the actions of those who couldn't appreciate the value of collaboration and shared success.

I am often asked who I admire and believe to be on top of their game in the world of radio presentation.

I have a tendency to avoid giving a direct answer as my feeling is that everyone in this fraternity of broadcasters brings something unique, different and special to their shows.

They on the air because somebody with far more experience and knowledge than I have has believed in and endorsed their talent.

Also what I think is irrelevant, it's what the listeners think is the most important.

The audience that tunes in is the best measure of any presenter.

That shows whether or not their is a connection.

So the metrics and data of how a particular presenter is performing is truly what counts and I'm sure the radio station and program managers pour over those analytics continually.

Not someone's opinion.

I also would rather keep my opinion to myself.

If I am asked who are my influences that's a bit easier to answer.

My answer is the medium of radio influenced me, not anyone presenter.

Radio programs triggered my imagination through the power of the spoken word.

The quiz shows, the radio plays, the sports commentators who had the ability to take you with them.

The palpable energy of the music presenters was another influence.

How so many were skilled like Casey Kasem when presenting the American Top 40, you could not leave the room because how he gave you a fascinating back story or held your attention with:

" Coming up is a song that was rejected by a band. This singer took it and it climbs 10 places this week "

That was for me radio excellence and supremacy where the skill of the presenter captured and held your attention from start to finish. ♥️

The Radio Business is not for the faint of heart ❤️

When you understand the intrinsic value of what you bring to the table , you will know exactly what you deserve.

You have today data and metrics that can be measured which is evidence and proof of the service you are providing.

In the USA radio market, presenters are hired and fired by the numbers.

The program and station managers analyse your audience reach every month and every quarter and they will drop you like a hot potatoe if you not achieving the targets set out.

It is not harsh at all because advertisers are paying good money to speak to that audience and they will move their budgets to platforms which speak best to their demographics.

There are thousands of talented presenters and producers waiting in line to snap up your position.

The market is highly competitive and intense and the ricochet effect of failure on the air will have management and staffers out the door.

There is no time to carry passengers when the stakes are this high.

I believe that this is why they so darn good because reputation and past glory does not guarantee you a thing.

Shape up or ship out.

If you can't stand the heat, get out the kitchen.

I love and respect their system because it's fair and based on empirical evidence with no place to hide.

STOP STALKING ME GAVIN K

As in life there are so many brilliant, unique, interesting and colourful characters that have shared time with me on radio.

I'm talking about the listeners who are the most important part of the relationship.

This one time I was very scared and stunned by what unfolded from a lady who had made dozens of calls to Jacky, my producer, asking to speak to me urgently prior to my arrival at the studio.

Jacky told me about this insistent lady and handed me her number.

I called and this is how the call went.

" Listen to me. I'm a married woman. Stop stalking me. I'm not interested in you. " and she banged down the phone.

I was shocked to my core.

I couldn't believe this false accusation but I also know that even if you're innocent, I didn't want to face the media
where some who may come to the conclusion that "where there's smoke there's fire"

Shireen Hollier was ending her show and I told her about the call and asked her to please call the lady and find out what she was on about.

Shireen called her and she told her that beside me stalking her relentlessy. I was following her wherever she went........

She added :

I was sending her suggestive text messages .

I was preventing her buying Elvis records on the internet

I had a car outside her home monitoring her movements

I was tapping all her calls.

Shireen asked her to please send the texts and wattsapps as evidence because this would result in the immediate dismissal of my services to the station.

Shireen and I came to the immediate conclusion that we were sadly dealing with lady suffering from severe mental illness.

I took great pity on her but I realized that we live in a world where you can be accused wrongly and you find yourself in very uncomfortable situations through no making or fault of your own.

CONFESSIONS OF A RADIO PRESENTER........🙏

My radio career has been an exciting thrill a minute roller coaster adventure and I wouldn't change it for a thing.

Like the song "Even the bad times are Good."

I've come away from every situation stronger and better for the experience.

I've had to deal with some professional jealousy
which I never imagined I would ever be that "good" that anyone would envy what I've done on the air because I doubt myself more than they could ever know or imagine.

I still believe after years behind the microphone, I am not that good and all I will ever be is at best a student that needs to improve and get better at this job.

Every show before I go live
I'm nervous and excited and I burn through liters of nervous energy to get going.

I would stumble upon this undeserved toxicity but it was like water off a ducks back and my colleagues who were true professionals would confide in me and I would never react poorly but just keep on going giving of myself in the best way I knew how.

I saw it as a validation that I was doing something right.

I'm the complete opposite of being jealous or envious because for me especially in radio presentation it's about being natural and real.

You cannot fake it. You will be exposed as a fraud.

Listeners are not fools. They know.

One incident that had me seeing red mist was a veteran broadcaster had been slandering me in a station meeting and it was brought to my attention by a colleague attending the same meeting who had the courage to reprimanded him for speaking about me and he had the balls to call him out.

Now one thing I've never done is speak behind my fellow broadcasters backs.

I keep my opinions to myself.

I think it is a huge inferiority complex on their part and lack of character.

In fact, I believe that the different styles, personalaties, cultures all contribute to making a radio station pop with excitement.

I come from a school where my listeners are the judge and jury and that's where it ends. I value their considered opinion above even my bosses.

Everybody is doing their best to bring you a different experience.

So this particular fellow saunters into the station one fine day and I see him through the glass panel and I'm in studio presenting my radio show.

I thought stuff it. I loaded 3 long songs and I confronted him about what he had said.

I told him off in colouful language and expressed my disgust at his unprofessional behaivour.

I was fuming and I warned him to leave the premises now or else he would face the consequences.

There were witnesses and he looked at them appealing for help but I could sense everyone's fear as not one of them had seen this
"easy going happy go lucky" Gavin guy so livid.

He jumped into his car and sped off with great haste.

More stories to come..... love you more today than yesterday 💗

Did you know that the second Friday of January is known as "Quitters Day."

They say that is when most New Years Resolution are broken.

From my perspective I think resolutions set most folks up for failure as they are influenced by the herd mentality where they feel obliged to make a decision.

You do not need the beginning of the year to make a commitment.

I advocate you have to internalise your promise and commitment.

You can keep your decision to yourself and just take it one day at a time and walk in your faith that you will succeed.

Yes you may fall off the wagon but it's not the end of the world as you are human but you can reboot and get back on track.

If you struggling reach out to that person you trust implicitly and you can confide in because they will not allow you get away with lies and weak excuses and they will give it to you straight.

You know they have good judgement and have your best interests at heart.

Whatever choices you made for 2025, I wish you unparalleled strength, courage, love and unbridled determination.

May you manifest your goals.

You will thrive in 2025. 💚

We should put everything aside right now.

To be consumed by negative energy and worry is going to detract us from our purpose in life.

Our purpose must surely be to be calm and kind in our darkest periods of life.

To show courageous leadership that inspires and to believe in fairness , truth and justice for those who walk a path of truth and light.

This reality ,however, painful is a clarion call for all of us to be as strong as lions in the face of danger and never lose hope or give up.

Do we not realize that this was meant to be?

If we can stand firm through this test of character, we cannot be defeated.

We can and will turn pain into power 🙏❤️

In the face of uncertainty and /or adversity I find remaining calm and composed the best option.

No use in giving way to panic and worry.

Those are wasted emotions that simply tear away and sap the very essence of the life force within us.

We need to accept and surrender to fate and the eventuall destiny that is being played out.

Somethings in life are beyond our control and not of our making.

What we are in control of is how we respond and react.

13/12/2024

One of my greatest strengths is I know my weaknesses.

That realization has been my
power in submitting to that which I cannot do and focusing on what I can.

So I invest time and energy in
the things that make me better.

My ego is arrested and never overtakes my sense of self importance.

I do what I do to the best of my limited ability just trying to serve and be better hopefully each day.

Life is not linear. There will be challenges. There will be times of doubt. There will be times of betrayal. There will also be times of joy.

I have a joi de vive attitude to all this by remaining calm.

By knowing that such is life.

As a Dad I was instilling the values of Ali in my boy, Danny K that "Service to others is the rent we pay for our room here on earth."
He continues to pay his rent on time to this day with his role as a co founder of
The SHOUT Foundation which builds libraries in the most impoverished communities of South Africa 🇿🇦
He is still at it since 2010. 🙏🏼❤️

Do you ever think of how you would like to be remembered when your time on earth is done ?

This question is one I don't know if you have thought of or considered lately ?

It will have so much to do as to how you treated people in your lifetime I suppose.

I have no lofty intentions of suggestions here but if their is one thing I'd like folks to consider is .......I will give you a subtle clue of how I'd want to be thought of.....

An abacus 🧮

Yes an abacus. You think about what that means.....

Let me know about you.....❤️
