In Part 2 of Episode 11 with tattoo artist Daniel Feinberg we discuss how tattoo artists get the opportunity to develop their practices by exploring the nitty gritty detail of the tattoo apprenticeship, the importance of trust and collaboration between the artist and the client as well as the various processes of collecting tattoos. Dan elaborates on his process of developing unique Japanese tattoos for clients. We end off with the ever-present stigma around tattoos and have a little celebration on how far we as humans have come in thinking about tattoos in contemporary society.

In Part 1 of Episode 11, we speak with Daniel Feinberg, a tattoo artist specialising in the Japanese tattoo tradition. We discuss his history in graphic design and commercial architectural visualisation and the major shift in leaving it all behind to becoming a niche tattoo artist. We delve into his process of transitioning, and the support that enabled him to pursue his career. Dan elaborates on the journey in learning all there is to know about Japenese Tattooing as well as the importance of understanding the philosophy and meaning behind the imagery. We touch on finding common ground, learning from your peers and growing in confidence in your practice. Dan elaborates on the barriers within tattoo traditions and that sharing is not always caring.

Episode 7: Autodidacticism
In this episode we discuss the value of autodidacticism or in laymen’s terms - self-education.
We reflect on institutional versus self-taught learning as well as the advantages and disadvantages associated with both. We take you through a step-by-step process from our experiences ranging from where to start, using resources to develop your skills, the value of connecting to a community of peers and the potential that dedicated self-learning could hold for your future.
After recoring, we were erger to learn something new! We wanted to learn how to make one of our favourite accessories, brootches! After a good amount of YouTube and Google research we got the supplies and started making. Watch this space for the launch of our Autodidactic brootches!

In this episode we speak to artist and award winning illustrator Zhi Zulu . We speak about her journey in becoming an illustrator, visual storyteller and her love for art. We touch on the importance of visual literacy and how Zhi, in her practice and studies, dissects modes of communication in an attempt to develop more relevant visual resources for local communities. We have a showdown on the value of practical and written components in research and why the knowledge acquired through postgraduate studies should be available for future reference. We discuss our thoughts on the position of illustration and illustrators within a traditional fine art environment and the perceptions of digital format art in the art world today. Zhi elaborates on her latest mural project at the new Jewel City Development and speaks about the challenges in translating drawing into this large scale format. Finally Zhi shares her thoughts on what it takes to make it as an illustrator.
