MURDER OF LOVE.
From SAMAL TV
Synopsis + Mini Treatment
The old saying goes 'All is fair in love and war but nothing is fair about a broken heart' so the same can be said for the Matlalas. A wealthy black family that was the epitome of the American Joneses. Dark Matlala (60) was the owner of a petroleum company that prompted him to become one of the first black South African billionaires. As a young boy from the rural province of Limpopo, he was raised in Bochum under the harsh sun and poverty. Having started as a gardener and then a political activist, this all lead to him becoming a businessman. He hustled his way through and broke boundaries and now, over 40 years later, he had a group of companies, three children and the love of his life by his side. His wife was a qualified business lawyer with their eldest son, Mogale, a doctor and married with two children. His second eldest son, Matimba was still corresponding with Unisa, seven years later and living off his father and known as the town's Drunken Master. He has been dragging his feet from graduating from his PhD as he holds only an MBA and then there was Tiffany; his last born and only daughter the absolute apple of his eye. She was smart, articulate and had a masters in Forensic Auditing and was everything her mother was. She was kind and loving and had a special bond with her father. She was a real daddy's girl.
And with all these, Dark had it all. Now that his daughter had given up her life in Cape Town to help run the family business, it was bound to be a small talk breaker at many dinner parties. It was Tiffany who was announced as the Group CEO of Matlala Petroleum at an exclusive gala dinner. Dark proudly showed off his daughter whom he had groomed all her life even though, she studied her own course, smiling and waving to everyone while making small talk, he saw a vision of his wife.
Tiffany stood at the podium and thanked everyone for their presence and spoke about a future working together with their guests and as she walked off to mingle with the crowd, she was introduced to a young man who had been her father's apprentice. "Hi, I'm Lehumo and it’s a pleasure to meet you. I've heard so much about you from your father, I look forward to working on top of you, I mean under you ", he said nervously fidgeting with embarrassment. She was too taken by his smile that she didn't even hear him fumble. "Ah yes. Me too", she replied. Oh my Lord, brother man is fine. The smile, eyes and fresh breath. Tick, she thought to herself.
"I see you have met Lehumo, Tiffany a great young man who's going places in the company", said Dark gently patting Lehumo on the back. "Yes father, we were just getting acquainted", said Tiffany as she gently pulled her father by the arm and walked off with him. Her brothers had come to support her and their throats too and it was with their lack of business support and Lehumo's professional relationship that the office moved to the bedroom. Their relationship blossomed so much to that awkward and puzzling dismay of Tiffany's father. "He is not right for her", he yelled on the phone to his wife. He has no money of his own, no business leg to stand on and I gave him everything he has and this is how he shows his gratitude? By sleeping with my daughter", he slammed the phone and stared out the window for a long time. Tiffany walked into his office like the little girl she had always been. She closed the door and softly said, "Papa can we please talk". He turned and starred her in the eyes." I love you Papa and only want to make you proud but..." she quivered, "I love Lehumo and he is a good man. I really want to marry him because he makes me happy and he gets me. He respects me. He treats me like you treat Mom", she sobbed. He charged towards her and held her by the arms and shook her. "Don't you ever compare me to him. Ever!" and he stormed out of his office. Lehumo heard the commotion and came to his beloved's side. "Let's give him time baby and hopefully he will come around", said Lehumo trying to reassure his fiancé.
The once strong bond between father and daughter was ripping at the seams. Tiffany had moved out of the family home and was living with Lehumo. She had given up her father's love for Lehumo's love and while business was doing well, Dark was miserable that even the pleas from his wife fell on deaf ears. "Papa why do you all of a sudden dislike the boy so much? A year ago, you were singing his praises to me", asked his wife.
"As an employee, he is excellent but as a son in law, no. He has achieved nothing. Why must he ride on Tiffany's back to climb the corporate ladder faster?” he shouted. For months, the family was torn between the forbidden and unwanted love of the group CEO and the company's junior manager. While Dark and his daughter hardly spoke, her relationship with Lehumo was more stronger and the wedding was going to go ahead- that’s what Tiffany thought by the way, that was until the evening of their anniversary…
Dark called Lehumo asking him to see him at the main house. "Can you come over to the house please? I need to talk to you. Please", asked Dark. With more than a hesitation, Lehumo agreed. He left a small note on the kitchen counter for his beloved. "Off to the Torture Chamber, be back shortly", it read. And when Tiffany came back home and saw the note; she started thinking the worst. "The two of them together in the same house my father will kill him ", she cried in panic, grabbed her car keys and phone to call her mom however the phone just continuously rang unanswered. As she drove to the main house, Lehumo arrived looking nervous and feeling awkward, he walked in, "I'm here", he called out. "He is in the pool-house", responded the butler. He opened the door and said, "I'm here. What is the emergency Sir?". ”I want you to leave my daughter alone. I just want her home", said Dark. "And if I don't ?", asked Lehumo. "Don't push me", said Dark as he stood up and moved closer to Lehumo.
"You and I used to have good times together and now you want to hurt me", Dark emphasised, caressing Lehumo's hands and working his way to his chest. "Hurt you?” yelled Lehumo.
"You have been after me for months and every time I refused your advances, it somehow turned you on and you came harder. You want to talk about hurt? Imagine how Tiffany would feel if she knew that her father slept his way through all these. That her father made his money from fu***ng the "youth" he groomed in his company", he shouted as he pushed him away. Not resisting at all, Dark went in closer and started to touch Lehumo. "You didn't complain when I spoiled you and we cuddled together. You didn't complain when I would touch you a little and you would moan. You never said no when I would fo**le you and you'd say my name", taunted Dark and as he was saying all of this, he stood in front of Lehumo and kissed him. He took his hand and starting making his way to his pants. As he caressed his torso, he unbuttoned his pants and on the floor they fell…
Tiffany walked in, worried by what the two of them would do to each other, she tip toed trying to hear any commotion. Nothing. In his study and living room, nothing. She calls the butler and asks where her father and fiancée are. "In the pool-house Madam". She rushes to the pool-house. Confused she flung the doors open and in front of her there is a condom wrap on the floor, her Father is facing the other direction wrapping on to the tissue the condom from his "Member". Lehumo had just put on his underwear trying to pick up his pants, her father and future husband in a rather compromising position. "What the f**k is this? What is going, is this why you don't want us to get married? You want to f**k each other rather!?” yelled Tiffany as she charged towards them in anger, slaps her father and storms out, screaming for her mother. Frantic, the butler comes out to calm her. "She is at a church meeting Madam. She will be back later, can I help you with something perhaps?” he asks with concern. She leaves. Meanwhile Dark is overtaken by grief, embarrassment and hurt. Lehumo drives after Tiffany and when Dark's wife came home, Dark made no mention of the fight. He went to bed with only but his conscience eating away at him.
While Tiffany was trying to make sense of what she had seen. She sat at the riverbank crying and drinking her pain away. Her father Dark on the other hand had gone about his day as per normal. He woke up, had breakfast with his wife, checked his diary, kissed her goodbye and off he went to the airport for his Middle East trip. Drenched in tears Tiffany drove back to her house with Thabo the following evening, after driving and crying all night; she walked into the house and grabbed a bottle of vodka. She downed it and started to cry. She downed it the second time and cried all over again and when she was going for the fourth time, in walked Lehumo. "Baby where have you been? Please let me explain!” As he spoke and pleading with her, her anger built up and she started feeling hot. All she could see was his mouth move but couldn't hear a word spoken. She thought of how the two most important men in her life could do this to her. How her own father would do this to her, his wife and family. How could the man she was sleeping with lie to her and make her an idiot! The more she thought about it, the more it hurt and her rage took over. In a blink of an eye, she grabbed a steak knife and began stabbing him. She went blank and just started piercing through every flesh of his skin she could get hold of. As his lifeless body lay on the floor, she stood on top of it in a daze and started to drink even more. The neighbours heard Lehumo's screams and called the complex security that called the police. They found Tiffany at the scene and she had passed out with a bottle of vodka in her blood stained hands. The police cuffed her and took her in where she was held in custody and charged the following day. At her trial hearing, she showed no remorse or presence. It was as if something had broken inside of her, she felt hollow. With all the media attention on the family and the murder, the company suffered and Matimba stepped up to the hot plate. While he was trying to save the company, a newspaper journalist harassed Tiffany for an exclusive since the day of the funeral- her Father committed su***de two months after she was convicted.
Her own mother had been so angry at her father that she couldn't bear the thought of doing right by him with a decent funeral but her conscious prevailed and she eventually arranged a decent funeral. Tiffany was permitted under custody to attend the funeral and she went. She kept her head down all the time and not a single tear was shed. In the days leading up to the trial, the IT Girl of the business world spoke to no one. She isolated her thoughts completely however opening up with this journalist, would be a first. The journalist, Tshepiso Moremoholo had followed the case and now was going to get an exclusive with Tiffany. The two sat by the corner in the visitor’s room. Moremoholo listened carefully as Tiffany explained how she had fallen from grace and how her father and fiancée committed the ultimate betrayal. One day as she spoke of her childhood and the bond she had with her father, the she openly spoke of a letter from her mother, however the letter was initially from her father. As she opened it and started to read it, her hands started to sweat and then slowly they started to tremble. Her face changed and so did her eyes. She first squinted and then starred at it till the tears welled up, her mouth wide open and eyes collecting the tears. She wailed with every fibre and emotion she felt. She wailed for all to feel her pain.
She ordered Moremoholo to go read the letter overnight and bring it the following day for preservation. The letter read as follows…
DEAR TIFFANY
My beloved Tiff, Daddy’s little Angel…
