Greytown: The town is established.
Greytown was established as a result of the 1848 Land Commission recommendation that a village be established in each county on the Colony.
A site overlooking the uMvoti river, where a stone fort had already been built by the early settlers, was first chosen, but owing to the stony of the soil and the difficulty of getting water to the houses, a new site on the farm of Mr. Rabe, who forfeited it by refusing to pay his โQuit Rentโ of Two Pounds. Mr. L.J Ne, as compensation was allowed first choice of any farm in the district, and the farm โDORINGHOEKโ in Kranskop district was his choice.
The town was surveyed in 1850 by Thomas Oakes, who named the streets after British Civil Servants and he was assisted in the layout of the town by Jacobs Nicolas Boshoff. The site sited the agricultural town, being a sloping spur. The layout of the town was similar to Pietermatizburg that the Zuluโs named it โUMGUNGUDLOVANAโ (The little elephant). This name is inscribed on the Greytown Coat of Arms together with a picture of an elephant. First known as the uMvoti township, it later was named Greytown in honour of SIR GEORGE GREY, the Governor of the cape. - Sourced
