Salem crowned new GCB T20 champs

By Chesley Daniels

Salem Cricket Club 1st XI were recently crowned the new Grahamstown Cricket Board (GCB) T20 champions for the 2024/2025 season, beating hosts Cuylerville in a hotly and closely contested final.

Cuylerville hosted the final day of the GCB T20 competition and had two teams in the last four, having split their sides into the Youngsters XI and the Formerly Young XI.

Cuylerville 1st vs Willows - 1st semi-final

The Formerly Young XI beat Willows in the first game of the day to qualify for the final. Willows batted first and made a solid start with Romario Fritz (27 runs) and Emihle Mgoqi (18), but lost wickets at regular intervals, reaching 106/9 (20). Cuylerville got off to a flying start with veteran Charlie Muir top scoring with a hurricane 46 after being dropped early on in his innings. Captain Brandon Handley scored an unbeaten 25 as Willows fought hard and took five Cuylerville wickets, but the score was just not enough in the end to defend. Cuylerville reached the target with five wickets down and four overs to spare.

Salem vs Cuylerville - 2nd semi-final

A youthful Salem 1st XI that would have put together a formidable Bomb Squad took on the Youngsters XI in the second semi-final. A fantastic bowling and fielding performance saw Salem restrict Cuylerville to 107/7 in 20 overs, Buster Brotherton with 2/12 in 4 and Bryn Wakeford 1/13 in 4. Salem chased the score down in the 18th over with 4 wickets down. Justin Dollery made a brave 40 despite a few knocks to the body from the fast bowlers who should have referred to him as Mr Dollery, given the age gap. Salem won by 6 wickets to book a date in the final.

Cuylerville vs Salem - Final

In the final, Salem bowled first again and a brilliant bowling effort put Cuylerville on the back foot at 49/3 after 12 before a very good 64* off 35 balls from Steven Gornall took Cuylerville to 140/3 after 20 overs. Bryn Wakeford bowled brilliantly again with 1/18 in 4, as did Connor Pieterse with 1/20 in 4. In response, after losing a wicket off the first ball of the innings, Salem got off to a flyer thanks to a fantastic 56 off 39 balls from Mark Were. James Mullins carried the innings through the middle overs before being undone by a long hop layered with experience from Warren Tarr for 43 off 35 balls. A couple of quick ones and twos against some tiring legs saw Salem over the line in the last over, with 5 wickets and 5 balls to spare.

Eskom suspends loadshedding

By Staff Reporter

Eskom says it suspended loadshedding this morning due to the recovery of sufficient emergency services.

"After a temporary setback that necessitated the implementation of loadshedding over the weekend, Eskom has suspended loadshedding as of 06:00 today due to the recovery of sufficient emergency reserves," the company said in a statement.

Stage 3 power cuts were implemented at 5pm on Friday following several breakdowns over the past seven days that necessitated extended repair times and the full use of emergency reserves, the power utility had said.

However, this morning Eskom said it had since replenished the reserves, with dam levels fully replenished and open-cycle gas turbines adequately recovered, ensuring a stable supply.

Additionally, said Eskom, five coal-fired generation units have been successfully repaired and returned to service, adding a total of 2 930MW to the grid. An additional 2 391MW is expected to be restored today.

Eskom also said its summer outlook published on 26 August 2024 remains unchanged.

The company will provide the next update on Friday, 7 February, or promptly communicate any significant changes as soon as they occur.

Kingswood scholarship applications for 2026 close soon

By Staff Reporter

Kingswood College scholarship applications for 2026 are closing on 6 February and qualifying pupilss are encouraged to apply, the school announced this week.

The Scholarship Programme is designed to celebrate talent and promote achievement at every level of the school.

Each year, Kingswood offers a number of scholarship places to exceptionally talented girls and boys.

Scholarships for Kingswood Junior begin only in the Senior Phase (Grade 4 – 7).

Scholarships for Senior School are open to pupils who enter the College in Grade 8, 9 or 10 the following year.

Scholarship applications are opened for a set period between December and February the following year.

Kingswood has also announced it is honoured to announce the establishment of The Michael Bandey Scholarship, a prestigious new scholarship made possible through the generous endowment of the WEM Foundation.

This scholarship has been created to honour the legacy of Mr. Michael Bandey (OK 1961), a beloved alumnus, past educator, and true master of Kingswood College.

The relationship between Kingswood College and the WEM Foundation, founded by (the late) Mr Whitney and Mrs Betty MacMillan, began 25 years ago, thanks to the efforts of Mr. Mike Bandey.

At the time, Mr. Bandey was Deputy Head of Kingswood Senior School and, during a visit by the MacMillan’s to Makhanda, he facilitated an introduction that would grow into a longstanding and impactful relationship.

The MacMillans, known worldwide for their dedication to education and philanthropy, developed a special connection with Kingswood College, visiting the school on several occasions over the years with a specific focus on supporting scholarships.
In recognition of their friendship and Mr. Bandey’s enduring legacy at Kingswood, Betty MacMillan expressed a wish that one of the WEM Foundation scholarships be named in his honour.

The Michael Bandey Scholarship stands as a lasting tribute to a man who has dedicated his life to the education and development of young minds at Kingswood. It will support future generations of pupils, enabling them to benefit from the same values of excellence, dedication, and compassion that Mr. Bandey has embodied.

This scholarship aims to provide opportunities to deserving Grade 5-10 pupils living in the Eastern Cape, who demonstrate financial need, a connection to Kingswood’s history (child or grandchild of an alumnus), displays all-round excellence, and a commitment to contributing positively to the school community.

Applications for Kingswood College Scholarships for 2026 are NOW OPEN: For a full list of criteria and to learn how to apply, please visit their website: https://kingswoodcollege.com/admissions/scholarships/

Former National Arts Festival CEO takes top job at the Edinburgh Fringe

By Staff Reporter

The National Arts Festival has congratulated former CEO, Tony Lankester, on the announcement of his appointment as the new CEO of the Edinburgh Fringe.

Lankester was CEO of the National Festival from 2007-2019 and has a long association with Makhanda, having read Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University before a stint in broadcasting, followed by time in corporate sponsorships until his appointment at the National Arts Festival. He remains a trustee on the National Arts Festival board.

Speaking from London, Lankester said, “I'm going into the job in Edinburgh with the winds of Makhanda at my back. The National Arts Festival is what started my love affair with the arts world and I am forever grateful for the time I had there and what I learned about this industry. Being able to witness, first hand, the transformative power of the arts for performers and audiences and to be part of a city that, like Edinburgh, knows how to put on a great show are definitely things I will take with me into this new role.”

During his tenure at the National Arts Festival, the Festival broadened its funding base and launched several new festivals – including the Cape Town Fringe and the Creativate Digital Arts Festival – and increased the global footprint of the Festival by touring multiple productions to Fringe Festivals in Australia, the UK, the USA and across Europe.

He was also founding Chair of the World Fringe Alliance, an informal grouping of ten Fringe Festivals which opened touring pathways for artists across the globe.

Says National Arts Festival CEO, Sikkie Kajee, “We heartily congratulate Tony on his appointment as CEO of the Edinburgh Fringe. We feel encouraged that the diversity of his experience carries him into this new role as CEO of the founding Fringe festival champion, Edinburgh; a global movement that plays a critical role in driving new work and opportunities for artists on stages across the world.”

Lankester assumes the role of CEO of the Edinburgh Fringe in April 2025.

Load-shedding is back: Stage 3 starts at 5pm today

By Staff Reporter

Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa apologised to South Africans as he announced Eskom would be implementing Stage 3 load-shedding from 5pm today.

It is not clear when the rolling blackouts would continue for, but Ramokgopa said they hoped to return to normality by Monday.

Eskom earlier issued an alert of high risk of load-shedding following several breakdowns over the past seven days that require extended repair times.

“This has necessitated the use of all our emergency reserves, which now need to be replenished. Consequently, we are closely monitoring the status of our current emergency reserves, and load-shedding up to Stage 4 may be implemented over the weekend,” said Eskom group chief executive, Dan Marokane.

He, however, said this was potentially a temporary setback.

Ramokgopa confirmed this. "Like I made the point earlier on, this represents a temporary setback, but the overall trend line is that we are in the right direction. So like I said before, we are within touching distance of ending load shedding."

The minister said they were "exceptionally disappointed" and would like to "profusely apoligise" to the country.

"The last thing that we wanted was to have a stage 3 [load-shedding]."

Some people have suggested that Eskom's decision was prompted by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa's decision to grant Eskom only a 12.74% tariff increase for 2025/26. The power utility had requested 36%.

Load-shedding may return this weekend, after nearly a year

By Staff Reporter

Eskom has issued an alert of high risk of load-shedding following nearly 10 months of uninterrupted power supply, the power utility said in a statement today.

This follows several breakdowns over the past seven days that require extended repair times.

“This has necessitated the use of all our emergency reserves, which now need to be replenished.

"Consequently, we are closely monitoring the status of our current emergency reserves, and load-shedding up to Stage 4 may be implemented over the weekend,” said Eskom group chief executive, Dan Marokane.

Marokane said this is potentially a temporary setback.

“Loadshedding is largely behind us due to the structural improvements in our generation fleet.”

Eskom will issue further updates in due course.

Rhodes University faces overwhelming demand amid historic matric pass rate

By Phila-Nathi Mapisa

The Matric Class of 2024 has made history by achieving the highest-ever 87.3% pass rate in South Africa. This remarkable milestone has resulted in a surge of university applications, with thousands of ambitious students fighting for limited spaces at institutions across the country.

At Rhodes University, this demand is starkly evident. The university, situated in Makhanda, has received a staggering 19,045 applications for first-year students—but only 1,650 can be accommodated. This means that less than 9% of applicants will secure a place, leaving thousands of hopeful students without an opportunity to study at one of South Africa’s top academic institutions.

The national crisis in higher education

The situation at Rhodes reflects a broader crisis across the country. The University of Johannesburg (UJ) received 400,000 applications for approximately 10,500 undergraduate spaces, while the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) saw over 290,600 applications for about 8,600 first-year places. Similarly, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) received 147,076 applications but could only accommodate 9,454 students. Collectively, 19 major institutions reported receiving more than 2 million applications for just over 200 000 first-year places, highlighting the intense competition faced by prospective students.

Despite reassurances from Higher Education Minister Dr Nobuhle Pamela Nkabane that there are sufficient post-school education opportunities in South Africa—including TVET colleges and private institutions—the reality remains that university placements are highly competitive. Many students are left with limited options, often forced to take gap years or explore alternative pathways.

Rhodes University: The price of accessible education?

For Makhanda residents, Rhodes University has long been a prestigious institution known for its rigorous academic programmes and close-knit student community. However, the overwhelming number of applications raises concerns about access to quality education.

One applicant, speaking anonymously, expressed frustration:

"I worked hard to achieve a bachelor’s pass, but now I’m stuck waiting to see if I even get accepted. There aren’t enough spaces, and I don’t know what I’ll do if I don’t get in."

This year, 337,158 matriculants qualified for Bachelor’s degree studies, a record-breaking number that surpasses previous years. Yet, with only approximately 200, 000 first-year spaces available across universities, thousands of students are left without certainty about their futures.

The demand for higher education in South Africa continues to grow, and institutions like Rhodes University must find ways to expand capacity while maintaining academic excellence. Some experts argue that the government should invest more in TVET colleges and distance-learning institutions to alleviate pressure on traditional universities.

As acceptance letters roll out, thousands of applicants to Rhodes will face disappointment.

For now, the dream of studying at Rhodes University remains just that—a dream—for the vast majority of applicants.

Eastern Cape DA ups the ante as Makana water, power woes persist

By Luvuyo Mjekula

Provincial leaders of the DA are planning to exert more pressure on the authorities in a bid to find permanent solutions to the water and electricity crises crippling residents and businesses in Makana Municipality.

This includes urgently calling for the return of the expert engineer seconded to the municipality by Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Zolile Williams, but later left, allegedly after being threatened. The party leaders even suggested the possibility of getting security for the engineer.

The DA also plans to report the local community’s water and electricity struggles and the alleged failures of the local municipality and other government departments, to the Public Service Commission.

“We can continue to write to the Department of Water and Sanitation and we’ll probably do that. But we’ve also decided that we are actually going to apply a little bit more pressure on the officials by escalating this matter to the Public Service Commission,” said Retief Odendaal, the DA shadow MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).

Odendaal and Jane Cowley, the Frontier Constituency leader, were speaking at a public meeting attended by Makhanda ratepayers and businesspeople at Graham Hotel in High Street on Tuesday evening.

In addition, DA leaders and caucus members would soon meet with unnamed prominent stakeholders in Makhanda and ask them to also “escalate the fight” to the Premier and the national minister.

Depth of talent on display as St Andrew's, Graeme, Kingswood, Woodridge and Pearson kick off water polo season

By G Mackenzie

The water polo season began with exciting home fixtures against Woodridge, Kingswood, Graeme and Pearson. These matches provided an excellent opportunity to involve all our teams, and the teams delivered some outstanding results.

U14 Teams

The newly formed U14A team had a nail-biting match against Woodridge’s U15A team, securing a narrow 7–6 victory. They later faced the St Andrew’s U15A side in a long-course game, holding their own impressively for the first two quarters before the experience of the U15A team prevailed. The U14 players show great promise, and I look forward to seeing them develop and grow as a cohesive team throughout the season.

U15 Teams

The U15A team dominated their match against Woodridge’s U15A team, achieving a decisive 10–1 victory and controlling the game from start to finish.

The U14/U15B combined team played two fixtures, facing Kingswood Junior and Graeme College Junior. Although they lost to Kingswood Junior 8–1, they bounced back with an emphatic 14–0 win against Graeme College Junior.

Senior Teams

The 4th and 5th teams both played against Graeme Senior, with both teams securing victories. They then faced each other in an evenly matched game that ended in a 5–5 draw.

The 2nd and 3rd teams competed in a pool alongside Woodridge’s 2nd team and Pearson’s 2nd team. Both our teams earned two solid wins. In a play-off against each other, the 2nd team triumphed with an 8–3 victory over the 3rd team, showcasing the depth of talent in our senior water polo program.

1st Team

The 1st team played against Kingswood’s 1st, Pearson’s 1st, and Woodridge’s 1st teams. Their defensive efforts were exceptional, conceding only three goals across all three matches. The team recorded commanding victories, defeating Kingswood 11–1, Pearson 9–1, and Woodridge 8–1. These performances provided excellent preparation for the upcoming St Andrew’s College Shield tournament.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to the smooth running of this event despite the short preparation time. While many boys played an essential role in assisting with various tasks, I would like to give special recognition to Farai Shamu, one of our new Grade 8 boys. Although unable to play, he dedicated himself to managing the table from start to finish, ensuring everything ran efficiently.

Bullish Makhanda boxers vow to win gold at upcoming national tournament

By Chris Totobela

One of the oldest boxing clubs in Makhanda, that has produced the finest boxers including former South African lightweight champion, Mzoxolo Ndwayana, is busy preparing two of its top boxers for imminent national trials.

Khayelihle Prince and Qhama Kilani will take part in the South African National Boxing Organisation (Sanabo) 2025 boxing trials for elite men and women at Hemingways in East London from 11-16 February, and are expected to bring back home the glory.

Kilani was so confident when he spoke to Grocott's Mail. "I am working very hard at training and I am sure that whoever I come across in these upcoming trials will have a very difficult time in the ring and I am confident of bringing home the gold medal."

Prince promised fireworks. "I think I'm ready for that weekend and boxers who will get into the ring with me will not finish the rounds. I will put them to sleep and they won't know what hit them. People of Makhanda must get ready to welcome us back as gold medalists."

Manager and coach of the two boxers, Sithule Jacobs, told Grocott's his two boxers were in superb condition. "These two boys are very talented and I always teach them not to get carried away by their achievements. Both of them are in superb condition and are ready to deliver on the day."

Makhanda's boxing lovers know the boxers very well and will expect no less than gold medals.
