Today, we formally served the Mogalakwena Local Municipality demanding answers regarding serious allegations against one of its employees.

Our concern stems from the fact that while one employee was dismissed over allegations of fraud and corruption, anothe despite facing similar serious accusations—remains employed.

We expect a response or decisive action within three days. Failure to do so will result in the matter being escalated.

On The Move Demands Answers on Alleged Corruption and Favoritism at
Mogalakwena Local Municipality

On The Move is calling for urgent intervention regarding allegations of favoritism, corruption, and bribery within Mogalakwena Local Municipality. Despite serious allegations against Senior Official in Town Planning, no action has been taken whereas for others just mere allegations in Municipal Manager's view they had committed a misconduct.
We demand to know: Why he is so hyprocratic and partial?

It is within our reach that a formal complaint was lodged against the said senior official, where a sworn statement was adduced giving a detailed on how it happened. It goes without saying that Municipal Manager, Morris Maluleka, corruption is defined in the eyes of partiality and favouristism. Evidence suggests that certain employees are protected while others face severe consequences. Is the municipal manager, Morris Montego Maluleka condoning corruption when it benefits certain individuals?

It came to our attention that this happened when a reasoning application was made in April/May 2024. After months of delays and frustration, they were allegedly asked for a R3,000 bribe by the same person before receiving assistance—yet, even after paying, they still did not get their rezoning. Is bribery now the cost of receiving basic municipal services?

Further allegations suggest that an officer in charge of the case was paid off to ignore the matter, raising serious concerns about corruption beyond just municipal officials. On The Move will be engaging law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

On The Move will request an urgent meeting with Municipal Manager Morris Montego Maluleka to demand answers. The residents of Mogalakwena deserve fairness, transparency, and action against corruption.

We refuse to allow this culture of bribery and favoritism to continue unchecked. If the Municipal Manger, Morris Montego Maluleka does not take swift action, we will escalate this matter further.

We call on the public to speak out—corruption thrives in silence.

PHAFOLA COMMUNITY DEMANDS JUSTICE AMIDST PROTEST CLASHES AND LATEST ENGAGEMENT WITH MEC

Phafola, Mogalakwena – The people of Phafola were left with no choice but to take to the streets after repeated pleas for service delivery and basic infrastructure were ignored by the Mogalakwena Local Municipality. For years, their concerns over deteriorating roads, lack of clean water, and failing infrastructure have been met with silence. After countless attempts to engage municipal officials through formal channels, letters, and community meetings yielded no results, frustration turned into desperation.

When the municipality continued to turn a blind eye, the people took their cries to the streets, blocking the N11 highway with burning tires to force those in power to acknowledge their suffering. It was not an act of destruction but a desperate attempt to be heard. Yet, instead of receiving answers, they were met with bullets and arrests.

While DJ Money Mok and On The Move (OTM) do not condone the burning of tires or destruction of property, we equally condemn the excessive force used by law enforcement. Protesters, some of whom were not even actively involved in the demonstration, were shot at and wounded. Instead of listening to the community’s grievances, authorities responded with violence, leading to 20 arrests. These individuals remain in custody, many still nursing injuries, and are set to appear in court on February 21, 2025.

We call on Mogalakwena Municipality to act with urgency and compassion by ensuring the release of the detained individuals, some of whom require immediate medical attention. The fight for basic services should not come at the cost of human lives and dignity.

Ironically, it was only after the streets were set ablaze and blood was shed that Mogalakwena Local Municipality and Limpopo MEC for Public Works, Roads, and Infrastructure, Ernest Rachoene, finally came to engage the community. A meeting was held where stakeholders raised concerns about Road D1958, a matter the people have been complaining about for years. During the engagement, The MEC of Limpopo Department of Public Works told the community to instruct the mine to channel its road construction funds through the department, arguing that they have the manpower, resources, and engineers to complete the project. However, the Phafola community has outright rejected this proposal due to a deep-seated distrust in government handling of infrastructure funds.

A key point of contention is the type of road being proposed. Public Works is only offering Dikgerekgere (regravelling), while the community is demanding a tar road—a long-standing need they feel has been ignored for years. When the department revealed that they only had an insufficient R900 budget allocated for the required road, the community demanded an official letter confirming the lack of funding. They intended to present this letter to the mine as proof that alternative funding was necessary. However, MEC Ernest Rachoene refused to issue such a letter, insisting that Public Works has the resources and expertise to execute the project if the mine provides the budget.

The community, however, remains firm in its rejection, arguing that the government has mismanaged funds for far too long and that they cannot entrust Public Works with this project. The standoff reflects a broader issue of broken trust between communities and government institutions, where residents feel forced to take control of service delivery after years of neglect.
