Next on the bill, we have the mother of grooves herself, Sumthin Brown. 🥳
With a CV boasting performances at different venues and events across the SADC region including major festivals like Corona Sunsets, Gin & Tonic Festival, Smoking Dragon, OppiKoppi, MTN Bushfire, Joburg Street Food Festival, and Azgo Festival in Maputo, Bonolo Sumthin Brown Mafoyane is a certified groove conductor beloved for her unique take on music styles like Soul, Jazz, Funk, Disco and overall groove. Whether it's a daytime soiree, a discotheque, a jazz show, or a corporate function, Sumthin Brown is an all-rounder with enough experience to discern what fits sonically for any occasion at any time.
She has held residencies across various platforms like Jam City Radio, DJ Bob’s Jazz Club, GYS Vinyl Sessions, Hamshack Radio, Sunday Sessions on 5FM, Garankuwa FM and Black Labone Weekly Festival. Sumthin Brown’s brand is synonymous with antiquity, counter culture and advocacy for independent thinking and freedom in self-expression.
Some notable highlights of her DJ career include completing three successful mini tours in Cape Town (December 2020), Maseru (2021) and Maputo (2022) under the "Sumthin Brown Plays" banner, which is a self-funded mini-tour concept through which she played various gigs in and around the respective cities including the Sculpture Garden at Norval Foundation for the inaugural Cape Town Art Book Fair, the popular and much-acclaimed Rands Cape Town, Bongo Drums Festival in Maseru, and Backroom Lounge in Maputo. Add to that the Sumthin Brown 10-hour Show she hosts annually and is in its fourth year running. The Sumthin Brown 10-hour Show includes a 10-hour DJ set by Sumthin Brown, a live band performance, photography and visual art exhibitions, a radio broadcast and a vinyl fair.
