MEO Pro Portugal Wildcards and Replacement Surfers

Barron Mamiya (HAW) sits at World No. 1 after his win at the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach presented by SHISEIDO and was selected as WSL Event Replacement for the MEO Pro Portugal presented by Rip Curl following the withdraw of three-time WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA).

Yago Dora (BRA) continues his recovery from his injury ahead of the season and will be replaced by WSL Injury Replacement, Matthew McGillivray (ZAF). Liam O'Brien (AUS) and Carlos Munoz (CRI) sustained injuries at Pipeline and continue their recoveries. They will be replaced by World No. 4 Caio Ibelli (BRA) and the highest placed Portuguese surfer on the Challenger Series, Vasco Ribeiro, respectively. Afonso Antunes (PRT) and Justin Becret (FRA) will also join the men's draw as the event wildcards.

Bronte Macaulay (AUS) will continue surfing as the WSL Injury Replacement for Caroline Marks (USA), who has withdrawn from the MEO Pro Portugal presented by Rip Curl due to medical reasons. Tia Blanco (USA) is joining the women's draw as the event wildcard after winning The Ultimate Surfer competition last summer.

Jordy Smith and Matthew McGillivray Step Up in Opening Rounds

SUNSET BEACH, Oahu, Hawaii/USA (Tuesday February 15, 2022) - The Hurley Pro Sunset Beach presented by SHISEIDO, the second stop on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), kicked off in sizeable conditions after four-consecutive off days. Men’s Opening Round 1 and Elimination Round 2 were completed in 10-to-15 foot surf ahead of a week of promising swell.

In the day’s opening heat, Jordy Smith (ZAF) matched the ocean’s power with his own, pushing the limits on a massive layback snap and a big re-entry to post the day and the event’s first excellent score of 8.00 points (out of a possible 10). Smith, who won a Qualifying Series event at Sunset before, faced compatriot Matthew McGillivray and Ryan Callinan (AUS) and advanced straight into the Round of 32.

“It’s definitely reassuring that my surfing suits this wave,” said Smith. “I’ve had some great success out here right from the very first time I surfed in that event. But this is a whole separate deal, coming up against the best surfers in the world you just got to lay it all on the line.”

While McGillivray managed to get a heat win over 11 times World Champion Kelly Slater in the elimination rounds. He will need to repeat this effort in the round of 32.

Round of 32 Matchups.

HEAT 1: Conner Coffin (USA) vs. Caio Ibelli (BRA)
HEAT 2: Kolohe Andino (USA) vs. Lucca Mesinas (PER)

HEAT 7: Morgan Cibilic (AUS) vs. Nat Young (USA)
HEAT 8: Seth Moniz (HAW) vs. Joao Chianca (BRA)

2022 WSL TOUR UPDATE

With Yago Dora annnouncing that it will take atleast 3 months before he can surf properly again, it looks like our local hero Matt McGillivray will have a guaranteed start at that first two events of the 2022 season and possibly more.

While we will miss the exciting perfomances we have come to expect from Yago, we are super stoked to see Matt back the top of our sport.

* Matt is currently the injury wildcard for the 2022 WSL Mens Season and will replace any injured surfer during the first half of the season*

"Surf is firing and we think it is going to hold well all day. We have clean conditions from yesterday's swell and it is really groomed. This is going to be a historic day for surfing as we crown the men's and women's World Champions in this new format and on the same day. I definitely think it’s a powerful image to all the young girls to see men and women out there standing next to each other at the very pinnacle of the sport. We're all excited to witness this. Best of luck to our World Title contenders today.”

Match 1 will see Johanne Defay (FRA) take on 7x WSL Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), followed by rookie Morgan Cibilic (AUS) and Conner Coffin (USA). Both matches will have a traditional heat format in a head-to-head competition. The winners will advance to Match 2 where they will face world No. 3 on the WSL Leaderboard: Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) and Filipe Toledo (BRA).
