SPRINGVILLE RESIDENTS PROTEST DEMOLITIONS, VEHICLES TORCHED
Tensions erupted in Springville on the morning of October 22, 2024, as residents protested against the demolition of houses in their community. The protest began after the Emalahleni Housing Department, accompanied by the Red Ants, allegedly moved in to demolish several homes without prior notice.
As the demolitions got underway, residents took to the streets, determined to protect their homes from being destroyed. In the ensuing chaos, law enforcement officers on the scene were targeted by the crowd. One officer was injured, and the group sought refuge at the nearby Victorian Heights Estate.
Protesters, however, forced their way into the estate, hurling stones and breaking four windows. Amidst the unrest, two municipal vehicles were set on fire, symbolizing the escalating frustration within the community.
The situation in Springville remains volatile, with residents demanding accountability from authorities over the handling of the demolitions. Further investigations into the protest and damage are underway.
