09/12/2021

The experienced Jerome Paarwater has been named Head Coach of DHL Western Province for the upcoming Carling Currie Cup campaign, with Kabamba Floors and Nazeem Adams his assistant coaches.

The former DHL Western Province loose forward has been part of the Western Province Rugby coaching structures since 2003, when he first served as the DHL Western Province Forwards Coach.

In 2007 he was the DHL Stormers Forwards Coach and went on to be appointed Head Coach of the DHL Western Province team in the Vodacom Cup. In recent years he has taken charge of the DHL Western Province U21 and DHL Western Province U20 teams, nurturing talents such as Salmaan Moerat, Herschel Jantjies and Damian Willemse.

Springbok loose forward Kabamba Floors will be the Forwards Coach, having coached the DHL Western Province U20 pack this season, while the experienced former Junior Springbok coach Nazeem Adams will oversee the backline.

Paarwater said that he is looking forward to guiding a squad full of talent, as DHL Western Province aim for a record 35th Carling Currie Cup title.

“We have got great depth here, with exciting players coming through our ranks all the time.

“This campaign will be challenging given that it will run at the same time as the DHL Stormers’ Vodacom United Rugby Championship season, but with the likes of Kabamba and Nazeem assisting me, I am confident that we can get the best out of our players and showcase the talent we have here,” he said.

Teams have now told their players the South African games have been cancelled. It means next week's games are also off. Massive blow for all in rugby

Hearing SA teams will play derby games next weekend in place of URC matches.announcement in the next few mins

SA matches postponed due to COVID variant risk

The Vodacom United Rugby Championship announced on Friday that this weekend’s round six matches in South Africa had been postponed due to the emergence of a new variant of COVID-19 (B.1.1.529). Next week’s round seven matches have also been postponed.

In a statement, organisers said that due to the sudden developments that had placed South Africa on the UK and EU travel red list the matches would be rescheduled for later this season.

“The safety and well-being of our participating clubs' players, coaches, support staff and match officials is the foremost priority and the URC is currently working with the four visiting clubs – Cardiff Rugby, Munster Rugby, Scarlets and Zebre Parma – to facilitate their return as soon as possible,” the statement advised.

“This decision is based upon the latest guidance against non-essential travel to and from South Africa, the ban on direct flights to the UK and other home destinations and the potential hotel quarantines enforced upon those returning from South Africa.

“As has been the operating practice throughout the pandemic, the URC will continue engaging with our Medical Advisory Group, our union shareholders and respective governments to plan according to the latest health guidelines.

“A period of assessment will now be required to better understand the impact of these new travel restrictions and how to reschedule these games within the current season. Given the nature and speed of these developments URC will provide further updates at the appropriate time through official channels only.”

Hearing all the SA games are cancelled this weekend. Expect an announcement soon.

SA Rugby, Erasmus withdraw appeal and apologise

SA Rugby and Rassie Erasmus wish to apologise to the match officials appointed to the first Test of the Springboks’ Series against the British & Irish Lions.

We also confirm that SA Rugby and Erasmus have advised World Rugby that they withdraw their Notice of Appeal and will not lodge an appeal against the sanctions imposed by the Judicial Committee.

This has been a highly stressful and charged environment with unusual pressures placed on all concerned and we have no wish to prolong that experience for anyone.

We have drawn a line under the incident and only wish to look forward. We will respect the outcomes of the hearing, allowing our national teams and rugby operations to plan with clarity for the coming months

Independent misconduct hearing update: Rassie Erasmus and SA Rugby
An independent misconduct committee has found that behaviour displayed by SA Rugby Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus towards match officials during this year’s test series between South Africa and the British and Irish Lions constituted misconduct.

ISSUED ON BEHALF OF THE INDEPENDENT MISCONDUCT COMMITTEE

An independent misconduct committee has found that behaviour displayed by SA Rugby Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus towards match officials during this year’s test series between South Africa and the British and Irish Lions constituted misconduct.

The committee was chaired by Christopher Quinlan QC, together with Nigel Hampton QC and Judge Mike Mika (both New Zealand).

Six charges were brought by World Rugby against Rassie Erasmus for various breaches of World Rugby Regulation 18 and World Rugby’s Code of Conduct. The charges in summary were that Mr Erasmus:

threatened a match official that unless a requested meeting took place, he would publish footage containing clips criticising the match official’s performance and then making good on that threat; published or permitted to be published the Erasmus Video containing numerous comments that were either abusive, insulting and/or offensive to match officials;
attacked, disparaged and/or denigrated the game and the match officials;
did not accept or observe the authority and decisions of match officials;
published or caused to be published criticism of the manner in which a match official handled a match;
engaged in conduct or activity that may impair public confidence in the integrity and good character of match official(s); and
brought the game into disrepute when he published or caused to be published the Erasmus Video.
Having considered all the evidence, including oral evidence from the match officials, Rassie Erasmus, SA Rugby, World Rugby, and submissions from the parties the committee found all six charges against Mr Erasmus proved.

Two charges were brought by World Rugby against SA Rugby in accordance with World Rugby Regulation 18 and the World Rugby Code of Conduct. In summary, the charges were that SA Rugby:

did not ensure that Rassie Erasmus complied with the World Rugby Code of Conduct and/or permitted Mr Erasmus to commit acts of misconduct; and/or did not publicly correct any comments or publications by or on behalf of Mr Erasmus that amounted to misconduct; and
permitted and/or did not prevent Siya Kolisi and Mzwandile Stick to make comments at a press conference on 30 July, 2021 that were not disciplined or sporting and adversely affected the game of rugby; and/or did not publicly correct any such comments so as adversely affected the game of rugby.
Having considered all the evidence, including oral evidence from the match officials, Rassie Erasmus, SA Rugby, World Rugby, and submissions from the parties, the committee found the first charge against SA Rugby proved.

Having considered submissions on behalf of both parties in respect of sanction, the independent committee decided on the following:

Rassie Erasmus

Suspension with immediate effect from all rugby activities for two months
Suspension from all match-day activities (including coaching, contact with match officials, and media engagement) with immediate effect until 30 September, 2022
A warning as to his future conduct and an apology to the relevant match officials.
SA Rugby

A fine of £20,000
A warning as to future conduct and an apology to the relevant match officials
The parties have seven days to appeal from receipt of the full written decision.

The full written decision is availablehttps://resources.world.rugby/worldrugby/document/2021/11/17/130c3d18-1cb1-4041-8faf-9db44c15572a/211117-Judicial-Cte-Full-Decision-Misconduct-Erasmus-SARU-Final-.pdf

Nkosi and Fassi released from Springbok camp

Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber confirmed that Sbu Nkosi (wing) and Aphelele Fassi (utility back) have been released from the touring squad to join the Cell C Sharks and will depart for South Africa on Wednesday evening.

Both outside backs were members of the national squad throughout the international season, but with neither player being involved in Saturday’s season-ending Test against England at Twickenham, the Springboks have agreed to release them for Vodacom United Rugby Championship duty.

“We completed the bulk of on our on-field preparations on Wednesday, and our only remaining training session is our captains run on Friday, so it made sense to release Sbu and Aphelele to the Cell C Sharks,” said Nienaber.

“With our squad already selected for Saturday’s Test against England and all positions covered in terms of depth within the touring squad should there be any last-minute withdrawals, we thought it would be beneficial for these players to get back into fold with the Sharks who are preparing for their Vodacom United Rugby Championship match against the Scarlets next weekend.”

Fassi made his Test debut against Georgia in July and earned his second Test cap against Argentina in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, scoring a try in each of those matches, while Nkosi, who boasts 16 Test caps, proved to be a key member of the team in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, facing Argentina, Australia and New Zealand.
