Initiation Schools Under Scrutiny: SAPS Targets Illegal Practices | Rea Gazette

The dangers of illegal initiation schools have come under the spotlight in the Sedibeng District, as the South African Police Service (SAPS) intensifies operations to combat this growing concern.

Sedibeng District Commissioner Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho outlined the legal framework surrounding initiation schools, stressing that parental consent is mandatory for minors to attend. "There’s no child who can give authority that they are going to initiation school if they are underage; his or her parents need to give authority. There are rules, and we will not tolerate anyone who tries to open initiation schools in funny places, undermining our cultures. It goes deeper than just making money," she said.

In her determination to combat illegal initiation schools, Mukwevho issued a stern warning to those running these operations. "Last year, we arrested one of the big people who thought that they own Sedibeng, and they are still inside. I am telling them, I am coming for them, one by one, be careful," she declared.

To ensure compliance, a dedicated team led personally by Mukwevho will work to dismantle illegal initiation schools. "We want to prove to the community that nobody is above the law," she affirmed, adding that these operations aim to restore cultural dignity and safety.

In addition to tackling illegal initiation schools, SAPS will be conducting inspections at spaza shops in partnership with local municipalities. The focus will be on cracking down on landlords and employers hiring undocumented individuals.

As festive operations continue, the community can expect visible policing and a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents. Mukwevho’s message is clear: "We want to ensure that the communities enjoy to the fullest."

A Mother’s Betrayal: Police arrested mother of Missing 2-Year-Old Kutlwano |Rea Gazette

Boipatong, Gauteng – The community of Boipatong is gripped by shock and outrage following the arrest of 32-year-old Keneiwe Portia Shalaba in connection with the disappearance of her 2-year-old son, Kutlwano. The case has taken a dark and unexpected turn, revealing a troubling web of allegations that has left residents demanding justice and answers.

On November 18, 2024, Shalaba was taken into custody at 4 PM after initially reporting that her son had been abducted. According to her statement, a silver-grey Volkswagen Polo with three male occupants forcibly took Kutlwano and drove off. However, police investigations have since cast doubt on her account, culminating in her arrest.

Shalaba now faces three serious charges:

1. Violation of the Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act 7 of 2013
This Act targets individuals involved in trafficking for exploitation, including forced labor, sexual slavery, or the sale of children. Under this law, offenders face hefty fines or life imprisonment. The involvement of children in trafficking cases is regarded with the utmost severity, and investigators are probing whether Shalaba’s actions were part of a larger criminal network.

2. Conspiracy to Commit a Crime
This charge alleges that Shalaba conspired with others to orchestrate her son's disappearance. South African law treats conspiracies to commit crimes as severely as the crimes themselves, emphasizing accountability for all involved.

3. Contravening Section 9 of the Justice of the Peace and Commissioners of Oath Act 16 of 1963
Authorities believe Shalaba made false or misleading statements to law enforcement, which may have hindered the investigation into Kutlwano’s disappearance.

Shalaba made her first appearance at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, November 21, 2024. The courtroom was filled with concerned residents, many of whom expressed anger and heartbreak at the turn of events. Shalaba is scheduled to return to court on Monday, November 25, 2024.

Sources close to the investigation allege that Shalaba has implicated additional suspects, fueling hope that these leads might bring police closer to finding Kutlwano.

Kutlwano’s disappearance has sparked widespread fear and concern. Described as a happy and curious child, his sudden abduction has left his family and community devastated. The police are calling for public assistance in locating the boy and urge anyone with information to come forward.

Captain Mokgoto, the Branch Commander, and Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela are leading the search efforts. They can be reached at 082 778 7937 and 079 695 1338, respectively.

As the investigation unfolds, the community remain united in their hope for Kutlwano’s safe return. This case is a chilling reminder of the vulnerability of children and the importance of community vigilance.

Residents are not only praying for Kutlwano but are also urging authorities to intensify their efforts to bring those responsible to justice. Until Kutlwano is found, his mother’s shocking arrest will remain a dark cloud over the small township.

Eskom Urges Meter Updates Before November 24 Deadline | Rea Gazette

Eskom is urging prepaid electricity customers to update their meters promptly to avoid unexpected power outages after the Sunday, November 24 deadline.

Monde Bala, Eskom Distribution Group Executive, emphasizes the importance of updating meters, including for those who haven’t purchased electricity in the last six months or more. Customers must buy electricity tokens from authorized vendors by November 24 to prevent their meters from becoming inoperable, losing power, and incurring replacement costs.

When purchasing electricity, customers will receive two sets of 20-digit codes necessary to recode and update their meters.

Meters still operating on Key Revision Number 1 (KRN1) indicate that no electricity has been purchased in over six months. To check the meter status, input the code 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 on the keypad:
- If the display shows 1 or 1.2, the meter needs updating.
- If the display shows 2 or 2.2, no further action is required.

To update your meter:
1. Enter the first 20-digit recode token.
2. Enter the second 20-digit recode token.
3. Finally, input the 20-digit token from your latest electricity purchase to recharge the meter.

Eskom advises all customers to act quickly to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply.

Woolworths Responds to Counterfeit Pilchards Investigation | Rea Gazette

Woolworths has issued a statement addressing an ongoing SAPS investigation into counterfeit canned pilchards found in Gauteng. The retailer emphasized its commitment to food safety and shared details about the situation. Below is their full statement:

"We are aware of the recent SAPS investigation into the discovery of a counterfeit operation involving canned pilchards in Woolworths-branded cartons, found in a facility in Gauteng.

Whilst this investigation is ongoing, we have strong reason to believe that the product in question may have formed part of an imported shipment from an international supplier that was rejected by Woolworths, as a result of it failing to meet our stringent quality control standards.

In the event of product being rejected, it becomes the immediate responsibility of the supplier to collect and dispose of the stock from our warehouse responsibly. We have launched our own investigation to determine why this process was not adhered to in this instance. At Woolworths, we take food safety and the wellbeing of our customers extremely seriously. It is our number one priority.

We would therefore like to remind our customers that Woolworths-labelled products must only be purchased at Woolworths stores, or through our Woolworths online channel."
