We recently completed four new classrooms at a well-regarded college in central Bloemfontein. This campus forms part of a national chain, and meeting their quality standards as well as technical specifications was critical to the success of this project.

Each of the new classrooms is equipped with an Epson laser projector, secured in a lockable "Cage", a Vivitek Novo wireless collaboration device, Alphatron RS232 control, switchers, and splitters.

Recently, we began work on a golf simulator, opting for the Optoma ZH350 ST – Short Throw Laser Projector. We chose this model primarily because of its laser light source, which offers several advantages. The Optoma operates more quietly and generates less heat, making it particularly well-suited for this application. Additionally, the laser lamp helps increase the frame refresh rate—a significant benefit in this context.

It’s worth noting that these advantages aren’t exclusive to the Optoma. Any projector with a laser light source, such as models from Vivitek, Epson, or Panasonic, offers similar benefits compared to their lamp-based counterparts.

Another projector we’re particularly fond of installing, and which currently offers excellent value for money, is the Vivitek DW2650Z. Its larger format frame size makes it ideal for venues like houses of worship or school halls. With a brightness of 4,200 ANSI lumens, it’s also perfect for sports bars or a lively home theatre, whether you’re watching the rugby at 5 pm or enjoying a late film. Thanks to its laser lamp module, the Vivitek DW2650Z runs cooler, which makes it suitable for extended operation periods.

Even in the smallest or most cash-strapped venues, a properly delayed sound system makes a world of difference, especially in long, reverberant spaces. It effectively halves the reverberation. Think about it: if only one sound wave front is reflected from the rear and side walls, only one echo will be produced. Now imagine six speakers, paired in sets of two and spaced six metres apart. In essence, you’ll have three separate wave fronts (I know this oversimplifies the problem – but the principle holds) colliding and reflecting from the rear wall with each movement of the speaker cones. That’s three distinct, differently timed signals or echoes returning to the artist, audience, or original speaker.

Now, if we can, by some miracle, time-align all these speakers so that all three pairs – still separated by six metres in real life – hit the rear wall at exactly the same time, we create only a single echo or reverberation. This makes the resulting echo three times less pronounced.

Accurate, delayed sound systems are neither new nor difficult to implement – but for some reason, very few designers or installers make the effort to incorporate them.

Very simple to operate and learn, the Roland V-1HD+ offers four standard-size HDMI inputs. The DSPPA DSP211 Ceiling Mounted Subwoofer is ideal for any presentation venue, bar, or lounge where high-fidelity sound is needed. It is the perfect supplement to a ceiling-mounted 100V (High-Z) or low-impedance sound system. This particular speaker will form part of a presentation and speech venue, using four of these subwoofers along with six Optimal Audio UP6 Coaxial 6” ceiling-mounted speakers. The system we designed for this venue emphasizes the clarity of the spoken voice; the addition of these four subwoofers significantly enhances the low end of the system while wireless presentations and videos are displayed.

The DSPPA DSP211 has a nominal frequency response of 50Hz – 200Hz according to the manual. We use an active speaker management system (Martin Audio DX04) to process the speaker further, utilizing our own crossover points and slopes with a very subtle EQ. The processing perfectly matches it to the Optimal Audio UP6 coaxial speaker, and the low-frequency output is phenomenal.

Blackmagic design, video switching equipment is such a joy in any church, venue or boardroom. We have been fortunate enough to have done live church (House of Worship) streaming systems with the Blackmagic, we installed them in boardrooms, doing complicated MS TEAMS and PC presentations, created a video recording studio based on the Blackmagic Design Atem Mini Pro and have done large conference venues using the easy and intuitive switching capabilities of the Blackmagic Atem Mini Pro. Everything in the Blackmagic range scream professionalism.

Our first project with Blackmagic was very simple, a Dutch Reformed Church looking to stream their live services via two full-HD cameras (With Mini-HDMI output) to Facebook Live, sometimes, switching to the song lyrics generated by a standard Windows PC on HDMI output. One 2-meter HDMI Cable, Two Canon XA60B – on their stands and two Blackmagic SDI – HDMI, HDMI-SDI Converter sets and the solution was ready to stream. You Tube, Facebook or record, local to OBS software.

A more complex project came in the form of a university looking to create content for their online courses. This, we accomplished with a 68” MERCER interactive screen running Windows 10, another Canon XA60B, front facing camera, an AVER document camera, and the local PC input for net content. All Inputs on HDMI Cables, switched by the Blackmagic Atem Mini Pro, again and outputs to either their YouTube Channel or OBS Recordings, accessible from their website.

Another solution where the Blackmagic Atem Mini Pro and the Blackmagic 3G / 18G HDMI to SDI / SDI to HDMI converters became our cornerstone is probably one of the most politicised venues in the Free State, South Africa. The Mangaung Metro Municipality’s conference chambers. Interlinking the Blackmagic Atem Mini Pro with the legendary Taiden HCS camera tracking system and 77 conference microphones, all playing their roll to facilitate either, one of two external HDMI inputs for presentation, a Windows driven TEAMS package, or the standard camera tracking by the installed Taiden conferencing system. These all get distributed via Matrix to three 65” monitors in a spillover venue, one program / control monitor and one large monitor for the delicates to see. This is where we trust Black Magic the most. If anything were to go wrong in this venue – we will get blamed for being bias to either one party or the other – logic and politic are not necessarily the same thing.

We completed these two vehicles for the ANC, Northern Cape, in two days. The request was simple, and the solution was straightforward, but the man-hours were substantial. The ANC Northern Cape requested us to quote and propose a way for them to reach voters in the most rural areas of the Northern Cape: Springbok, Aggeneys, Port Nolloth, Kimberley, and any town in between. We suggested four Wharfedale Titan 12AX speakers because of their low power consumption, high SPL output ratio, and lightweight, practical design. At only 12.5 kg, this turned out to be the ideal solution. Other features of the Titan 12AX that came in very handy were the decent rubber handles on both sides of the speaker cabinet, large enough to properly grab and carry; the tough ABS cabinet that can withstand quite a beating without cracking, chipping, or damaging; a silicone-coated woofer that prevents damage when the cabinet gets slightly wet from rain or dew; 8 x M6 bolt or pole-mount mounting options; and an abundance of spare parts should anything go wrong in the future.

On the spares side, the Wharfedale Titan 12AX is a “modular” system. This means that you can quite literally open the speaker in the field and replace either the woofer or tweeter, power amp section, power supply section, or the complete amplifier module as a whole. This makes servicing these speakers very easy for a novice electrical or sound engineer. These parts are also available to order at short notice, which is something lacking in other brands or models.

The way the speakers are packaged is ideal for road use. Whether mounted on the back of bakkies promoting political parties for the upcoming 2024 South African elections or in the back of a small car amplifying your treasured band or DJ set, they really are the most practical powered speaker setup you’ll find at this price point. And that is also one of the Titan's great advantages—the price.
