Pulane Tumahole, the mother of Thato Tumahole; the young woman whose charred body was discovered at a mineshaft in Welkom passed away on Saturday 08 February 2025

Thato was reported missing by her mother when she failed to return home at around 18:00 on 10 May 2024 after visiting friends.

The 19 year old's body was found on 22 May 2024 and her identity was confirmed on 30 May 2024. Katleho Seape (22), who was the boyfriend of the victim, confessed to the murder.

Mamelodi Sundowns delivered a devastating blow to Orlando Pirates' title hopes, thrashing the Buccaneers 4-1 at Loftus Versfeld to move nine points clear at the top of the BetwayPremiership encounter.

The Brazilians were in scintillating form, with Grant Kekanaopening the scoring in the 13th minute, courtesy of a Marcelo Allende free-kick. Lucas Ribeiro Costa then doubled Sundowns'lead in the 27th minute, firing a precise shot into the far bottom corner after a brilliant solo run just outside his own half.
Although Deon Hotto gave Pirates a glimmer of hope with a 57th-minute strike, Ribeiro crushed their spirits just two minutes later, netting his second goal of the match and ninth of the season.

The final nail in the coffin came in the 78th minute, as TebohoMokoena unleashed a trademark long-range shot from outside the box, securing a resounding 4-1 victory for Sundowns and cementing their position at the top of the PSL table.

The Afriforum CEO Kallie Kriel stated they will not be going anywhere after United States (US) President Donald Trump signed an executive order that cancels funding in South Africa and offer refugee status to Afrikaners.

During a press briefing, Kriel stated that they did not request sanctions from the US and blames President Cyril Ramaphosa and his government, whose 'irresponsible actions and policies' have led to the current situation.

"We became a people here. We are indigenous people and we are going nowhere," said Kriel.

He further expressed appreciation to the Trump administration for recognising the 'discrimination that Afrikaners are experiencing through racial legislations, through the BELA Act, through threats to property rights'.

The organisation has requested a meeting with President Ramaphosa to talk and find common ground.

Two males were found in possession of heavy steel cut-offs in Mangosuthu Street, Thabong near Welkom. Members of Operation Vala uMgodi Tactical Operational Center [TACJOC] Free State received a tip-off from private media colleagues about possible destruction of valuable infrastructure in Dagbreek area.

A Maroon Ford Ranger double cab was identified and spotted traveling along Mangosuthu Street. The police stopped and searched the motor vehicle and found Twenty (20) cut-offs of heavy-duty steel pylon struts weighing at 523 kilograms, loaded at the back of the Ford Ranger.

A case docket of Possession of presumably stolen property; Tampering, damaging and/ or destroying essential infrastructure with additional charge of Contravention of Immigration Act was opened at Thabong Police Station. The suspects will appear in Welkom Magistrate Court soon.

United State of America's President, Donald Trump has signed an executive order to stop providing aid to South Africa. In the order, he states that he cannot support South African Government commission of rights violations.

He further promote the resettlement of Afrikaner refugees fleeing government-sponsored discrimination.

"The United States shall promote the resettlement of Afrikaner refugees escaping government-sponsored race-based discrimination, including racially discriminatory property confiscation." He said

The child po*******hy accused couple, Darren Wilken and Tonia Moodley, appeared in the Randburg Magistrate's Court after Wilken’s lawyer requested a postponement on Monday to strengthen their affidavits in response to the state's opposition to bail.

The couple is facing serious charges, including child po*******hy, money laundering, fraud, drug trafficking, and possession of stolen property.

The state alleged that the website, reportedly operated by the couple, featured explicit images of minors, including very young children and teenage girls, that were available for purchase, adding child trafficking charges.

Moodley has denied any involvement in his alleged crimes and claimed to be single while Wilken stated to be in a stable relationship with her since 2022. She also made allegations in an affidavit that Wilken, controlled her throughout their relationship.

Meanwhile, Wilken, has denied the state's claim that he is a flight risk and allegations of child trafficking.

"There’s absolutely no evidence that I, in any way, manufactured any material or was involved in the trafficking of children," said Wilken according to his affidavit, read out by his attorney Johan Eksteen.

The judge has reserved judgment on the bail applications, with a decision scheduled to be delivered on 14 February, Valentine's Day.

Mpumalanga farmer, Pieter Johannes Grobler, was granted R8,000 bail by the Secunda Magistrate's Court on Thursday, after spending a night in custody, following his arrest by the Hawks on allegations of repackaging and attempting to resell rotten and expired food products.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi, spokesperson for the Hawks in Mpumalanga, a tip-off from a credible source alerted law enforcement authorities to alleged health hazard activities unfolding at the farm, prompting a swift investigation.

"Upon executing the raid, Hawks officials made a disturbing discovery at the farm, where two warehouses housing four cold rooms were found to be stocked with large quantities of spoiled and expired foodstuffs, including meat, chicken, and dairy products, according to Lieutenant Colonel Nkosi."

The case against Pieter Johannes Grobler has been postponed to March 27, 2025, to enable investigators to gather additional evidence and complete their probe into the alleged food contamination and resale scheme.

In a dramatic turn of events, the State has dropped three theft charges against South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan and his co-accused, SAFA chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo. However, the duo still faces three charges of fraud and one of conspiracy to commit fraud.

The State revealed the amended charge sheet on Friday during a court appearance at the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Palm Ridge. According to State advocate Moagi Malebati, the theft charges were withdrawn, but Jordaan and Hluyo remain accused of misusing SAFA funds for personal gain.

The allegations against Jordaan include using SAFA funds to pay Grit Communications over R1.1 million for personal services and protection of his image following r**e allegations in 2017. He is also accused of entering into an unauthorized agreement with Badger Security to provide protection at the 2018 SAFA elective conference.

Jordaan and Hluyo have denied the charges and intend to plead not guilty. The case has been postponed to 15 August 2025, to allow for a review application.

In a related development, journalist-turned-businessman Trevor Neethling, who is also accused of fraud, has made representations to the Johannesburg Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Andrew Chauke on why he should not be prosecuted. A decision is expected by the first week of March.

The ocean of colorful, dirty, stinking papers and plastics will never wave or fly like birds without nests around Mangaung Metro areas.

This came after the municipality took the stand to install 123 cement bins where all the garbage will be thrown at throughout the metro.

The Head of Department (HOD) for Community Services in the Metro Dr. Thabang Thinda said that in order to obtain a greener environment, residents are urged not to litter.
He said areas such as Central Park, China Mall in Bloemfontein, and Fourways in Botshabelo where litter had found its home, the municipal will have to install more bins there.
"Hawkers are also encouraged to utilise these bins and encourage their customers to follow suit.

“This is in our endeavor to create an environmentally conscious city to benefit residents," said Thinda.

Thinda said the cement bins will be installed as follows:

◦ Botshabelo - 30
◦ Dewetsdorp - 4
◦ Soutpan - 3
◦ Wepener - 3
◦ Thaba Nchu - 20

A 48-year-old man from KwaCeza's Ngobodweni neighbourhood has been handed a life imprisonment sentence for the horrific r**e of his eight-year-old neighbour, bringing a measure of closure to the community after his guilty verdict in October 2023.

To bring the offender to justice, detectives from the Ulundi Family Violence, Child Protection, and S*xual Offences (FCS) Unit put in many hours of labour. On October 11, 2023, the young girl encountered the accused who cannot be named because the child victim was his neighbour as she was en route to his house to play with her pals. According to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the man dragged the gullible girl to the surrounding bushes where he sexually assaulted her.

Unfortunately, it wasn't the end of the ordeal. Three days later, the man summoned the girl inside and r**ed her once more as she was playing with friends at his house.

The young girl told her elders about the episodes despite the trauma, and they promptly called the police. A successful conviction resulted from the case being handled with seriousness.

According to Netshiunda, the accused was convicted on both r**e charges and given two life sentences behind bars for his crime. "The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm, and his name will be engraved on the National Register for S*x Offenders." stated Netshiunda.

Mabalane Mfundisi, the Civil 20's (C20) South Africa Sherpa, has reaffirmed the commitment of engaging with civil society in health policy development during the 1st Health Working Group meeting.

Mfundisi outlined that C20 seeks to empower marginalised voices and champion policies that promote universal health access, equality, and sustainable development.

He further stated that the C20 supports South Africa's G20 leadership and its five health priorities such as strengthening primary healthcare, preventing and responding to pandemics, building a stronger health workforce, fighting non-communicable diseases, and using innovation to boost health and the economy.

“It is important for South Africa that our G20 Presidency is inclusive. Dialogue with civil society and other non-government institutions will be conducted through various engagement groups. South Africa firmly believes that civil society serves as a bridge between the G20 leaders and the people who have the greatest interest in their deliberations,” he said.

The C20 Policy Pack will be presented to President Ramaphosa and global leaders in November 2025.

“This year we will proceed with the preparatory work for the establishment of the NHI,” said President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The President of the Government of National Unity was at the centre-stage addressing the nation in Cape Town City Hall on Thursday 6 February evening.

The president alluded that part of the preparatory mandate to implement the NHI bill is to modernise health operations and services, “This include developing the first phase of a single electronic health record, preparatory work to establish Ministerial Advisory Committees on health technologies and health care benefits, and an accreditation framework for health service providers,” he said.

Despite the USAID funding halted as it was announced by the President-elect of USA Donald Trump, the president underscored that the bill will strike a balance to deliver and essentially provide to preserve the lives of everyone; “The NHI will reduce inequalities in healthcare by ensuring everyone gets fair treatment. The NHI will save many lives by providing a package of services that include, for example, maternal and newborn care and services for people living with HIV, those with TB, and those suffering from non-communicable dieases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes,” added president Cyril Ramaphosa.

Although the counterparts of GNU such as DA, ActionSA, ACD and Rise Mzanzi expressed in opposition to the bill, the frontline speaker of the reformed government emphasised that the critical priority is the amendment of health care facilities with a number of hospitals already in construction.

“Our most immediate priority is to strengthen the health system and improve the quality of care. A vital part of this is the modernisation, improvement and maintenance of existing health facilities and construction of new hospitals and clinics. A number of hospitals are under construction. These include the Limpopo Central Hospital and the Siloam District Hospital in Limpopo, the Dihlabeng Regional Hospital in Free State, the Bambisana District Hospital and Zithulele District Hospital in Eastern Cape, and the Bophelong Psychiatric Hospital in North West”, he said.

“Other projects are at various stages of design and development. This includes the replacement of three existing old central hospitals, three new central hospitals, five new district hospitals, five community health centres and a new psychiatric hospital”, disclosed President Cyril Ramaphosa.

In his latest State of the Nation Address, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a groundbreaking R20 billion transformation fund to support black-owned and small businesses over the next five years. This move aims to address the historical exclusion of black South Africans from economic opportunities and promote a more inclusive economy.

Ramaphosa emphasized that the country's economy has been held back for decades due to the exclusion of the majority of South Africans. "Black South Africans were deprived of land, capital, skills, and opportunities," he said. "Our economy was starved of its potential. This is why we need to transform our economy – to make it more inclusive,” Ramaphosa added.

The transformation fund, worth R20 billion per year, will be allocated to support black-owned and small business enterprises. This initiative is expected to empower women, persons with disabilities, and other previously disadvantaged groups.

In addition to the transformation fund, Ramaphosa announced that the funding model for municipalities will be reviewed. Many municipalities are struggling to meet people's needs due to a lack of skills and resources. The government plans to work with traditional leaders to implement local development plans and expand support to municipalities requiring assistance.

Ramaphosa also highlighted progress in eThekwini, thanks to the implementation of the District Development Model (DDM). He called on all South Africans to come together in the National Dialogue to define a vision for the next 30 years, emphasizing the importance of empathy and compassion in shaping the country's future.

With this significant investment in black-owned and small businesses, Ramaphosa's administration is taking a crucial step towards transforming South Africa's economy and promoting inclusivity.

Brazilian football icon Marcelo has announced his retirement from the beautiful game at the age of 36, bringing an end to a storied career that spanned over two decades.

Marcelo's rise to fame began at Brazilian club Fluminense, before he joined Real Madrid as an 18-year-old in 2007. He went on to become a mainstay in the Los Blancos squad, earning the respect and admiration of his peers and fans alike.

In 2021, Marcelo was named club captain, a historic moment that saw him become the first non-Spaniard to wear the armband in 117 years. Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez paid tribute to Marcelo, hailing him as "one of the greatest left-backs in the history of Real Madrid and world football."

After leaving Madrid in 2022, Marcelo had brief stints with Olympiacos and Fluminense, before parting ways with the latter by mutual consent in November last year.

As Marcelo brings the curtain down on his illustrious career, he will be remembered as one of the greatest left-backs of his generation, and a true legend of the beautiful game.

In his speech, President Ramaphosa stated that while the government has provided housing since 1994, the approach has contributed to inequality and urban sprawl.

"Going forward, we are going to build more housing in our city centres and closer to work and business opportunities," said Ramaphosa.

As part of the new strategy, the government plans to restructure the housing subsidy system, increasing funding for programmes that allow people to buy or rent homes in areas they prefer.

Ramaphosa announced that the government will release unused state properties for affordable housing and reclaim hijacked buildings in city centers for public use.

In a bizarre incident, residents of Heidedal were left shaken after discovering an airplane door at the Twin City Mall parking lot on 8 February.Eyewitnesses claimed that the door, which appeared to have fallen from the sky, landed in the parking area around 16:20. Fortunately, no one was injured or killed in the incident. The South African Air Force quickly responded to the scene and took possession of the airplane door, confiscating it as part of their investigation. The sudden and unexpected arrival of the airplane door has left the community in shock, with many wondering how such an incident could occur. Authorities are likely to investigate the matter further to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Two suspects (26 and 37) are expected to appear before court soon for a case of Attempted theft of State minerals with added charges of Trespassing, Illegal mining and Contravention of Immigration Act with regard to the illegal underground miner; and Conspiracy to commit crime, Attempted theft of State minerals and Possession of gold bearing material against the mine employee are being investigated.The first suspect, an illegal underground miner was found in possession of gold bearing amalgam nuggets weighing at 90 grams and contraband items.The second suspect, who is also an employee of Kopanang Mine was found with four (4) gold bearing amalgam nuggets hidden under his arm guards. The suspect alleges that he would get paid if he successfully smuggled the 515 grams of gold out of the Mine area.
