POLISHED PRODUCT VS LEARN AS U GO.

This one is NICHE. Has anyone ever had the argument, when releasing a project (wether it be an album, a clothing brand, an Instagram page), between having absolutely everything prepared and accounted for before releasing a single crumb about the endeavour, versus just putting it out into the world and improving as you go?

Upon Tape 24’s launch, we had this exact internal debate. The logo is ready, the idea of where we want to take it is ready, so let’s just start posting. But we’re a music video channel, so shouldn’t we have a music video ready to go before the release? Okay, music video done. Shouldn’t we have more in the bank, so we have a constant stream of releases? And we know we want to clothing, shouldn’t we have manufacturers and samples sorted before posting? And what about shooting feature films and events, should we make those connections first? Where do the preparations stop?

There’s debates for both. Some will say “Just start, you’ll pick it up on the way” which is very true, and will also involve a lot of harsh lessons and archiving posts when you decide to completely rebrand 2 months in. And some will say, have your assets, tone of voice, content etc prepared for putting anything out. Being prepared is amazing, and can put you in a really strong position.

DOING WHAT YOU NEED VS DOING WHAT YOU LOVE.

In the creative field, you’ll meet a lot of people doing what they need to do to get by; whether that be freelancing on jobs you hate doing, working part time in retail or hospitality to pay the bills, or even holding down a full time job and spending every spare minute working on your “side hustle”. I think it’s fair to say that all of us dream of the day when we can quit that part time position, or turn down those soul crushing jobs, and be in a position where your passion is your sole income, and your “hobby” is now your career.

You’ve got to be delusional in dedication, and keep end goal in mind whilst you’re stacking shelves to pay rent. And even if circumstances change, and your goals have to take back seat to life, there’s no shame in doing what needs to be done until your situation improves. How many DJ’s, photographers, or designers have you met that also work at Footlocker on the weekend, or play sets at a 13 years olds birthday party for some cash in hand.

Enjoy the journey, and shouts to all those who can relate.

WAS IT LUCK?

It’s undeniable that luck plays a part in everything. Some might call it divine timing, some might say it’s a product of their “manifestation”, and some might say it all comes down to their hard work. But how much does luck play a part?

I could be described as a cynical person, so I certainly believe that luck is real, and it’s unforgiving and arbitrary in who it affects. Some people get a lot of good luck, some get a lot of bad luck; life doesn’t care who you are.

Capitalising when that spinning wheel lands on you, is all about preparation. It’s about what you do when you’re blessed with that 1 lucky opportunity. The difference between those that go far, and those that don’t, is being prepared for that lucky break and taking the opportunity to every inch of its possibility. Everyone gets a bit of luck some time, but not everyone makes the most of it.
