DON’T OPEN THAT DOOR! This week we’re talking with our pod-Dad and From Superheroes host Andrew Ivimey (he/him) about the wildly popular game that defined the horror survival genre; Resident Evil. We discuss how the designers used technical limitations to their advantage, eight-foot tall monster babes, campy wrestling style heel-turns and why these games are the good kind of bad, not the bad kind of good.

Heroes, Champions, and Inquisitors unite! Steph (she/her) and Kyah (they/them) talk one of Steph’s favorite fandoms; Dragon Age! We’re chatting about our heroic (or occasionally boring) companions, sexy scorching romances, and complex post-tolkien fantasy politics! Plus, we touch on the personalization of video game experiences, how Kyah got absolutely trolled by the opening title of Inquisition, which choices were the toughest, and why some characters (*cough* Fenris) are the physical embodiment of sad emo-pop songs (*cough* Simple Plan).

assemble! We’re talking to comedian and all-around excellent person, Liz Johnston (she/her) about the fandom that she loves (3000), the Cinematic Universe. We discuss the most iconic heroes and villains, the infamous ‘blip’, the ‘formula’ of making a Marvel film and how they have impacted the current landscape of Hollywood filmmaking. Is Martin Scorsese correct? Does Marvel make art? What even IS art? And, more importantly, why did Falcon and the Winter Soldier have so much boat content? This episode was brought to you by Industries.

NEW EPISODE!

Yip Yip! Jump on your beloved air bison and get ready for a tour of the four nations because we’re joined by Kevin Vidal (he/him) as we discuss Avatar The Last Airbender!

We talk about the discipline of element bending (and why you shouldn’t use it for chores), how a kids show managed to take on ‘the horrors of war’, what makes something ‘anime’ and why M. Night Shyamalan’s weirdly gritty adaptation did absolutely everything wrong.

This episode has been brought to you by Cabbage Corp.

Our friendship is our power! Podcast host and gamer Travis Ryans (they/them) joins us to explain the somewhat confusing and utterly sincere JRPG phenomena that is Kingdom Hearts! We chat about the (literal) elevator pitch that brought the worlds of SquareEnix and Disney together, purchasing keyblades, Donald Ducks sketchy reputation, and why it’s so refreshing to see a series that embraces wholehearted sentimentality in an otherwise pretty “heartless” world.

The story so far

Cardboard Sword Collective was founded by Kyah Green and Stephanie Malek because, honestly, they just wanted to make nerdy theatre and create more spaces for q***r and female content. Their shared love of creating high quality theatre on a low budget drew them together for their first project, a live read-through and audience sing-along of Once More With Feeling, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode. With just three weeks, no budget and a lot of enthusiasm, the pair pulled it together to sell out not one but two shows back to back on Halloween night. Inspired by their success and also just how much fun it was, the pair have already planned two shows for 2018, including a remount of their Buffy read-through for Halloween, 2018. Stay tuned for more high concept, cardboard fueled content coming soon.
