Shepherd followed the teachers and students at this school through the process of developing their personal essay as a speech to share with the entire student body at the end of the semester. Manhattan International High School was founded in 1993 and is located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It is a part of The International Network for Public Schools. The 330 students who attend the school all speak English as a second language and have lived in The United States for less than four years. Over 50 countries are represented and 30 languages and dialects are spoken at MIHS. Speech day with both Ms. Cinzia has been going on for seven years. Season 1 of What's Happening Here features the stories told by the 2016 class.
