Something tells me you're over it.

You've spent a lifetime loathing your body and you're DONE.

Well... good news. You're standing right at the edge of a turning point in your body journey.

Listen...

THIS is the body you'll be living in for the rest of your days on earth, so you might as well stop trying to force your body into some whimsical expectation. And instead maybe starting healing your RELATIONSHIP with your body.

Don't get me wrong--you can pursue your biggest health goals. And of COURSE you want to feel your best. And of COURSE your body will change, and fluctuate, and shift throughout different seasons of life. That's totally normal!

But let me ask you this... Do you really want to spend the rest of your life being at odds with your body? Picking apart all the things you don't like? Cringing at photos of yourself? Skipping experiences because you don't like the way you look?

The thing is... the answer isn't "fixing" all of those aspects.

You could change everything you don't like and you STILL won't be happy; We've got to dig waaayyy deeper.

We have to get to the root of WHY you believe your current body is so terrible and then flip the narrative so you're not living in body-loathing for the rest of your life.

I got to sit down with Sarajane Case who is full of wisdom and is just such a beautiful, kind, insightful, amazing human being! We talked about the Enneagram, coffee (of course!), and how we can cultivate a loving relationship with ourselves!

Sarajane is a trained Enneagram teacher, author of The Honest Enneagram and Host of the Enneagram & Coffee Podcast.

She works with the enneagram to help people find their perfect balance between self-care and growth so they can release shame on their path to doing less harm.

It was almost my turnā€¦

On the other side of the door was an editor from my dream book publisher and I'd have exactly fifteen minutes to pitch my book to her. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was just seconds away, and the butterflies in my tummy were more like dragons.

It was go time.

The hostess smiled and offered a soft, ā€œyou ready?ā€ as she opened the door to let me in.

Ready? Hah! My mind went completely blank. I had absolutely no idea what in the world to say to this woman in this moment that I knew I couldn't waste.

So I walked in, sat down, and said, ā€œHi! It's so nice to meet you! I'm Jennifer and I used to weigh 336 pounds but this is not a book about weight loss.ā€

It was clunky. I was nervous. But from there I blurted out my story with as much passion as could pour out of my eager heart. Her jaw dropped as she listened to the quickest, most zealous depiction of my story, and before we knew it there was a knock on the door stating that my fifteen minutes was up.

I walked away hoping that she could see just how much I yearned to use my story to help someone else.

There was nothing that special about me. I didn't have a huge social media following. I wasn't the world's best writer. I didn't throw her a perfect book pitch in that short meeting. I didn't have an ā€œinā€ or know anyone who could help me make a connection.

But what I did have was a story. And not just a story to tickle people's ears. A story that I knew could help someone else.

And though I wasn't the only human who had ever gone through what I'd gone through, there wasn't a single soul on the face of the planet who could tell my story like I could.

A few years later, that same woman took my story back to the Tyndale Publishing House team and I became a published author.

Now wait just a second because I'm not telling you this to toot my own horn (do people still say that these days? šŸ˜†)

I'm telling you this because I believe that you, too, have a story to share.

And that's what I've dedicated today's podcast episode to.

I DONā€™T have toā€¦ I GET to. šŸ‘Ÿ

I know what itā€™s like NOT to be able to move my body. There was a time in my life I could barely walk to the corner and back.

But one day I decided to put my shoes on and do what I COULD do. And here was are. Outside walking miles in the cold and rain and loving every second of it.

Because I donā€™t have to, but Iā€™m so glad I get to. šŸ§”

Hereā€™s the problemā€¦

You keep telling yourself that you're ā€œbeing bad" when you eat something you think you shouldn't, but that's only sabotaging you.

Because inevitably and eventually you're going to eat that forbidden food, right? It's going to happen. But because you've now attached morality to that food, you're going to experience crushing guilt after you've eaten said food.

And then you're going to try even harder to avoid that food.

But inevitablyā€¦ you're going to eat it.

And then feel guilty.

See where I'm going with this?

It's a cycle that we need to break.

Versus the other scenario which is that you give yourself unconditional permission to eat whatever foods you want, and therefore you don't feel out of control when you finally get to eat something yummy that you've been avoiding.

You justā€¦ enjoy it. You savor it. You can easily stop when you've had enough and you can still feel physically comfortable afterwards because the entire process is peaceful. It's not riddled in fear, stress, and anxiety.

Two years ago on a nice fall morning, I decided to go for a run. I'm not a big runner, but I can appreciate a solid run on a cool day with some gorgeous scenery. I threw on my shoes, turned on an upbeat playlist, and headed to a long, paved trail in town.

I didn't have mileage in mind, or even speed. I just found a steady pace and decided to see where it took me.

For a couple of miles, I was feeling good! One mile led to the next, and then the next, and before I knew it I was nearly five miles from where I started!

Which, is really very far for someone who doesn't even run very often.

But then, I started getting tired. I started feeling aches, and pains, and muscle fatigue. And what had initially felt like an exhilarating run through the woods, now felt daunting. Only now, I couldn't just stop and be done with it.

I had to keep going.

I had two choices. I could turn around and walk at a snails pace alllllll the way back to my car. OR, I could push through the discomfort, put one foot in front of the other, and get back to my car a little sooner.

But either way, I had to go through those four-and-a-half miles before I could call it quits.

Sometimes we don't have the choice to quit. For me, that's been very true in my body journey.

I've wished it away, tried to ā€œfixā€ my body, cried and screamed and kicked and melted to the floor hoping I could stop being in angst over my bodyā€¦ but all these years later I can tell you for sure, there was no way around this journey of mine.

I just had to go through it.

But there's victory in going through it. Just like there was on that fall morning run when I finished, having run further than I ever had in my entire life. The feeling of freedom and empowerment that came when I walked through my front door and held up nine fingers signaling to Phil that I had just run NINE MILESā€¦. Jennifer, I cannot even explain it.

And the same is true in my body journey.

What started as a wish that I could make myself as small as possible, became a journey to freedom that the Lord and I have journeyed together, and it's been one heck of a ride.
