So you want to design dynamic combat encounters in Dungeons and Dragons?

You know, the kind that they will never forget? Well, luckily we’ve got exactly what you need. Today we will delve into giving you exactly the tools you need in a simple and easy-to-use way. Are you ready to learn how to build dynamic combat encounters using monster roles?

There is no arguing the key to designing interesting and varied combat encounters is having just as varied groups of monsters. By further breaking down monsters into roles, we can design even more fantastic and memorable combat encounters.

What are Monster Roles?
Roles is the term we will be using to describe what the particular monster or NPC’s job is during the encounter. While some monsters can fit into multiple categories. We are going to focus on what we think they do best, over what they might do best in a particular encounter.

Artillery
Artillery monsters excel at ranged combat. Whether they rain explosive balls of fire, arrows or just chucking javelins. Artillery is focused on keeping a distance during combat. They tend to more often than not focus on areas of effect damage, spreading it between multiple targets. Their distant strategy often means that they lack powerful defensive capabilities and may need...

I want to design a new card/board game. The base will be chess style play, but with cards that alter the battlefield, buff/debuff characters, etc. Fantasy, Steampunk or Sci-fi theme (not sure yet). But I like the idea of each piece having a unique ability or feature in addition to movement patterns.

Is this something that would interest you? If so, what would you do to make it more appealing?

I have finally completed Baldur's Gate 3. This has hands down been one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences of my life. The character development, interconnected stories and the shear amount of options available. Thank you Larian Studios for creating such a fantastic game. You have earned a supporter for life.

I am already itching to play again. But alas, I'm torn. Do I delve back into BG3, or delve into Divinity Original Sin games?

How NOT to use a Spell Reagent from Spark Forge Cards.

Aboleth Mucus

In the grand saga of tavern blunders, the tale of Grundin the bard and his quest to become the ultimate party wizard takes the cake—or rather, smears it all over the walls. Grundin, with an ego as inflated as a dragon's ego on a compliment-filled day, decided to revolutionize the tavern's ambiance using nothing other than a vial of Aboleth Mucus. His friends, wisely fearing the worst, warned him against it. But Grundin, with a flair for the dramatic, declared, "Fear not, for what is life without a little risk?"—famous last words if there ever were any.

As he poured the mucus into the fog machine, visions of awe-struck patrons showering him with applause danced in his head. What happened next, however, was less a dance and more a chaotic stumble in the dark. The machine sputtered to life, spewing forth a fog so thick and dark it seemed the night itself had invaded the tavern. This was no ordinary fog; it was a pea-soup fog of doom that not only blinded everyone within but also seemed to slap them with invisible, inky hands.

The tavern transformed into a slapstick arena; adventurers tripped over chairs, bards lost their lutes in the darkness, and the barkeep was caught in a tango with a broom, mistaken for a rowdy patron. The sounds of chaos were punctuated by Grundin's own flailing attempts to find and turn off the machine, a task that felt akin to navigating the mazes of Minos in a blindfold.

When the fog finally lifted, like a bad spell broken by the sheer embarrassment of its caster, the tavern looked as though it had been the stage of a particularly rowdy poltergeist. Drinks were overturned, food decorated the ceiling, and patrons wore expressions that ranged from bewildered to "I'm going to turn that bard into a newt."

Grundin, his clothes drenched in a mixture of ale and the remnants of his dignity, had indeed transformed the party atmosphere—but into a spectacle of misadventure that would be talked about for ages. He learned a valuable lesson that day: mixing Aboleth Mucus and party planning is like dancing with dragons—you might think you're leading, but you're probably about to get burned. Or, in Grundin's case, left in the dark, stumbling over your own feet.
