My Transgender Partner is Transitioning After 17 Years of Marriage.

We are sharing our family's journey in hopes that we can humanize what a transgender experience can be like. Since Shaye came out to me in 2019, I have learned that despite the baggage our culture has about gender, being transgender doesn't hurt anyone. People assume this is a craze or trend because more folks are coming out today than ever, but the fact is that trans people (often referred to as third gender or two spirit in a variety of world contexts) have been with us since the beginning of written human history.

When someone's identity is different from what you've been taught is "natural", it's understandable that there is initial discomfort, but I ask you to push beyond that. Transgender people are vibrant and wonderful. My journey with Shaye has taught me that loving and championing a transgender person makes the world more beautiful.

Emmeline and I had a fun time modeling for .sleepwear. Nightgowns are kind of a big deal to me because I want to feel cute when I’m lounging in the evening, and these sleep dresses from Doz are so comfy and pretty. Emme lives in hers. She even wore it to school today she loves it so much! 😂

Happy Mother’s Day! 💐

What this day means to me has transformed a lot over the last decade. For 6 years before becoming a mom I dreaded Mother’s Day because I was unable to get pregnant. I feared that infertility was a symptom of my inferiority or unworthiness, and the day was super awkward. After we had Emme, Mother’s Day became joyous, but it was also bittersweet. I oftentimes didn’t want to be celebrated because my heart was weighed down by all the ways I fell short. I’d worked hard to become a mom and had vivid ideals about motherhood that I was sure I could meet after so much time to prepare, yet I found myself having moments every day when I really didn’t enjoy being a mom. I felt infertility survivor’s guilt for not “enjoying every moment” like so many older moms told me to.

In recent years I’ve come to terms that perfection is only an idea; it’s not a reality. I’ve realized that the best gift I can give to my kids is to be present for them emotionally (when I’m full of joy and when they’re driving me crazy as well). I believe that if I can love and accept them unconditionally, then they’ll be all right, despite many quirks and deficiencies I have. The big takeaway has also been that it’s difficult to provide this love to them if I can’t unconditionally love myself. When I care for and empower myself, I have a greater capacity to love them.

I’m grateful for all the women who have loved me—especially my mom, my sisters, my grandmothers, and my mother-in-law.

4 facts about Desi:
1- He is serious and methodical. If you tell him something he’ll ask “how do you KNOW?” 🧐
2-He gives the best snuggles and comes and gets with bed with me in the middle of the night almost every night.
3- He is the most excited thing in the world when his siblings get home from school. He sometimes asks me, “how can I get bigger sooner?” because he wishes he could go to school with them.
4- He doesn’t like public attention. When we go to his preschool performances and cheer for him, he’s acts like he doesn’t know who we are. 😂

Easter fun 🐰 It should come as no surprise that all of our festivities revolved around food and candy. (So much candy!) I made a Simnel cake (my new favorite 😋) and a 3D lamb cake with a vintage mold I found on Etsy. So fun! 🙌🏻 We colored eggs using the Cool Whip method this year, which was messy, but the kids loved it! We also had a Easter egg hunt with Gramps—a tradition going back to when I was a kid. 🐣

Spring macarons! 🌼🐰🌸 These are so fun to make. Have you made macarons before? It's tricky and takes lots of practice, but now that I've found a recipe I like and I've troubleshooted (a lot!), I've gotten more consistently good at making them.

My new bakeware from has really brought up my game. Everything is beautifully well made, and this Silicone Macaron Mat is a game changer. The GOMA whisk is probably the nicest kitchen utensil I own. I can tell it will last for decades. I also really like this nylon piping bag for being a more sustainable.

Calling all fun moms! Initially, I thought of the as a crafting machine for me, but it's ended up being a fun tool to enliven everyone's creativity at our house. Recently, I've made all of these fun projects with the kids: personalized mailboxes, puzzles, a mood robot, and a Victorian dollhouse. The kids are already planning more projects.
