Congo Square 1817 Congo Square is where American Music was birthed by enslaved Africans in the late 18th, early 19th century in New Orleans, LA.

Congo Square 1817 is a media company that leverages the power of arts and entertainment to promote Civic Engagement, Anti-Racism, and American History, focusing on the cultural contributions of African Americans and the African Disapora It also became the first place in antebellum US where enslaved and free people of color gained the right to legally gather in a public space in 1817. What started

out as a community marketplace soon evolved into an epicenter of culture, becoming a gathering place for everyone, not just the enslaved and free POC. In addition to it being a marketplace with religious and cultural expression, community organizing and activism happened there as well, especially leading up to and during the Civil War. In same spirit, this online community exists to be a resource for black voters, offering them a more wholistic view of the interconnectedness of politics, culture, and social issues. This is where we organize, strategize, and disseminate actionable information so that we can advance our interests as a power base collectively through civic engagement.

Setting the record straight! A fun historical fact about Nashville we all should know!

Did you know the world renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers put Nashville on the musical map long before the city became famous for its honky-tonks and slide guitars?

The original Fisk Jubilee Singers introduced ‘slave songs’ to the world in 1871 and were instrumental in preserving this unique American musical tradition known today as Negro spirituals.

RIP to Dr. Paul T. Kwami, the long-time music director since 1994, who passed away last month. He was 70. 🙏🏾💙💛

Good Morning!

We’re super excited to announce that we’re doing a Back 2 School Bookbag Drive from now until the end of August! With all of the efforts that we’re seeing in Florida and other places around the country, to whitewash or erase the history and experiences of African Americans, or totally exclude educational programming that centers African American culture and contributions, we thought that this was a great opportunity to reinforce our history and community with grade school students by sharing the history of Congo Square in a wearable and shareable way as a branded bookbag that will hopefully spark intrigue and conversation. Most of the bookbags are slated to benefit a local charter school and some bookbags will be made available to individual teachers for them to gift to students in need or of their choosing. We’ve already started receiving money from sponsors! Please consider sponsoring a bookbag or more for this great cause if you can, we’d love to have your support! See flier for more info.

Rest in Power sir! Mr. Avant was 1 of 1, we are grateful for his contributions to the culture and beyond..

He managed Sarah Vaughan, discovered Bill Withers and advised countless people in the industry and beyond: "He’s been the silent architect of so many deals, it would make your head spin."

Political Activist Sunsara Taylor speaking Truth to Power! ✊🏾

In her “Woke” Lunacy vs Real Revolution Speech at UCLA back in May of 2023, she so eloquently and succinctly lays out how the “system” is and has always been designed with racism at it’s core against black people. Moments like this are needed for clarity so that we can learn the history and understand how best to prevent the same from repeating or reinventing itself.

With it being printed on backpacks, it becomes a wearable and shareable conversation piece! Anyone can support by sponsoring a backpack for a student for $25.. inbox for more info if interested…. Thx in advance!
