*My Tribute to Goni Bukar Lawan*
I came back from Yobe State University where someone asked me to guide him on an assignment on Tuesday to the sad news of the passing of the Icon, the humanitarian, the leader, the father of the fatherless, the philanthropist and a renowned grassroot mobilizer completely gutted. It was something that came to me as a dream, for I was not sure if the news I was reading on Leadership Newspaper was real. I had to scroll to many national dailies to be really sure of the news. I was still searching when someone shared the news in the famous Yobe State Social Media WhatsApp platform and many people started praying for Him. Immediately, my body trembled and shivered like someone who was soaked in cold water in the early hours of the day. But the Maker decided to draw the curtain. We can’t question our Creator. Allah knows all. Besides, every soul shall taste death. Distinguish Honourable Commissioner Alhaji Goni Bukar Lawan has just gone the way of all mortals. All we, his family and Yobeans can do now is pray for him and hold on to the fond memories. For me Yobe First Child Almahdi MJ, as I reflected on my first meeting with him when I was introduced to him as a Yobe Son who is a journalist living in the Southern part of Nigeria, I remember nothing else but the pure love and affection he showered me in his house. It was a sweet refined memories I truly hold dear to my heart. The care, kindness and generosity of this mentor to many young people is amazing and unimaginable. I remember a friend of mine was asking me to borrow him N24,000 to add up and pay his registration fees. I was only having N10,000 with me. I told him that I can only afford N10,000. As we were talking we were unaware that some two men were eaves dropping on our conversation. One of the *two guys said to us "haba dubu ashirin da hudu ne kuke nema? Ba ku san BUGON ba ne? Ku same shi ya cika maku kudin"* the young man was actually asking us to meet BUGON for the money. Then and there my friend asked them for BUGON's address. That was it. After a week I met my friend and he told me that BUGON gave him N40,000. This was how BUGON was helping young people. The elderly people will argue with you that BUGON helped them more than any other age grade. The women's part of the story says he empowered them more. Everyone in Yobe in one way or the other will testify to you about his generosity, meekness and kindness. This world indeed is temporal. How can we not miss a leader like BUGON?
The passing of the Yobe State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Alhaji Goni Bukar Lawan at this time when Yobe state and the country needed his immense wisdom and knowledge in its efforts to overcome its challenges, is a great loss for which I cannot find the right words to describe.. Though death is inevitable, we cannot forget the immense contributions of the Former Member, House of Representatives to the promotion of peace, harmony, unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence in our state and the country at large. We would miss his selfless service to humanity, his fatherly counsel, his sound advice, his words of inspiration and galvanizing spirit that was a uniting factor for people of different background, age, class, faith and ethnicity.
My deepest condolences go to Goni Bukar Lawan’s wives, children and family who gave us their Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle and Son , and to Mr Governor HE Hon. Mai Mala Buni, all his cabinet and Hon. Bukar Lawan's immediate Staff and colleagues in the Ministry for Youth and Sport.
Rest in peace my uncle and leader.
